This is really great. I first learned about The Pretty Things when I bought Singapore Silk Torpedo, but later I found out how that album was nothing as good as what they used to do. I had already heard Bowie doing this and loved it but had not checked out the original artist.
they were never big here in America. they received no airplay. Since I was an exceedingly early Stones fanatic and the Pretty Things drummer played for the Stones I got into the Things, I really, really love "Honey I Need" it sounds so "essential rocker." I liked their slower R&B and their later stuff. I"ve a double album that spans their entire career...play it quite often
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll.
I still can't get over what their management was thinking when they decided not to tour the US back in 64-65'. Just listening to this early recording and other live 60's videos of the band is a clear indication they were a force to be reckoned with, and would have gone far had they toured the states.
All those old numbers were real gems...Rosalyn, Don't bring me down, cry to me, Big City, Big Boss man,and ofcourse that great ROAD RUNNER. I think they lost their great sound when the drummer died.
I just spoke to Viv Prince on the telephone on 8/11/09. He is doing just fine. He was very friendly, but shy. His drumming defined The Pretty Things! I will be calling him again!!!!! Anyone have anything you would like me to pass along to him?
You're welcome. I am calling Viv on 8/17/09. I will be happy to ask him your question. Will let all of his fans know his reply. I told him how large a fan base he still has in the U.S. all these years and how he is regarded as one of the greatest drummers in rock history.
From the time The Pretty Things were GREAT. But when I see them on You Tube with recent video's it is clear...that had to stop 30 years ago! They never matched this great quality!
How many are as good? They were all young, full of enthusiasm and pushing the boundaries. The Who were my heroes but I never went to see them after about 1974, their best days were over.
So many great Pretty Things clips have been posted - huge thanks to all responsible - but there are big blank spaces for 2 of their biggest songs, 'Don't Bring Me Down. and 'Rosalyn' (from back in the day I mean - not the re-formed band). I can't believe they didn't make clips or do TV appearances playing those songs so there must be some footage out there somewhere. If you have a clip of either of those songs please post it.
This is really great. I first learned about The Pretty Things when I bought Singapore Silk Torpedo, but later I found out how that album was nothing as good as what they used to do. I had already heard Bowie doing this and loved it but had not checked out the original artist.
Thanks for posting this fantastic clip.
