@85Aheadstix ok, DNA codes for proteins and DNA is passed on in reproduction. There are sometimes different alleles that code for different proteins that produce a morphological difference. The frequency of these alleles change. This is the basics of evolution. thus evolution happens. take a basic biology course at an accredited college.

Carbon dating works, the only times it doesn't is a) when the plant or animal in question lived underwater b) when there's no carbon in it (or it was contaminated with carbon) c) when the remains in question are older than 40,000 years which is stretching it a bit, it isn't all that reliable for those time frames, it's better to use other radiometric dating methods.
Also, consider the temperature of the earth's core, without millions of years it would still be hot enough to melt the surface.

To date further back you have to use other radiometric isotopes. also, scientists are aware of the flaws such as inclusions and open systems which can give false dates, they don't use them when dating. Besides, even if carbon dating didn't work there are hundreds of other methods all of which have been tested extensively.
So how does it come to be that the light of other galaxies that are up to over a dozen billion light years away, or even light of individual stars within our own galaxy, that are thousand of light years away, has reached us in only 5000 or so years as you propose? A light year is the distant that light travels in one year, you know?

@MstrMatt Sorry, but carbon dating only works on organic (not fossilised) material that is younger than 60000 years old (and 60000 takes extreme methods, for practical purposes read 40000 years) which is still a lot more than the YEC's 6000 :). We do have other dating methods for the dinosaur fossils though.

The frequency of these alleles change. This is the basics of evolution. thus evolution happens. take a basic biology course at an accredited college.

Carbon dating works, the only times it doesn't is a) when the plant or animal in question lived underwater b) when there's no carbon in it (or it was contaminated with carbon) c) when the remains in question are older than 40,000 years which is stretching it a bit, it isn't all that reliable for those time frames, it's better to use other radiometric dating methods.
Also, consider the temperature of the earth's core, without millions of years it would still be hot enough to melt the surface.

@85Aheadstix you don't get a million years, that was my point, you can only get 40,000 years at a stretch, and it's only really accurate within about 10,000 years. To date further back you have to use other radiometric isotopes. also, scientists are aware of the flaws such as inclusions and open systems which can give false dates, they don't use them when dating. Besides, even if carbon dating didn't work there are hundreds of other methods all of which have been tested extensively.

The author's point wasn't that just because when things happen in one day that they can't be millions of years old, BUT THAT, just because something appears to be "millions of yrs. old", doesn't mean it really is... it really can be only a year, or even a day old. We KNOW that fossilization can happen in a few months.

@11axu thanks for the correction, i thought all fossils were formed by degeneration, replacement and recrystallization in casts and molds.
we know that fossilization can happen in mere months, but carbon dating will reveal that fossil to be only a few months old. we don't presume that fossils are millions of years old, there are scientific dating methods.

you can use telescopes and to look at the stars in the sky, use the position and velocity to calculate that all space matter originated from a single point, you have a distance, distance X speed = time.

@11axu the point that eye2eyeiiiv was making is that because the human perception of time is minuscule in comparison to scale of all time we have derived scientifically then it somehow doesn't make sense. because humans find contemplating billions of years hard, there can't be billions of years. that was his point, and that is entirely stupid.

@MstrMatt Sorry, but carbon dating only works on organic (not fossilised) material that is younger than 60000 years old (and 60000 takes extreme methods, for practical purposes read 40000 years) which is still a lot more than the YEC's 6000 :). We do have other dating methods for the dinosaur fossils though.
I'm not arguing about your conclusion, but your method of arriving there needs some work on the details.

Let's make this simple:
We know the speed of light.
We have taken photographs of galaxies 13 billion light years away....ie: the light has taken 13 billion years to reach us.
With that said, if god really created the universe a few thousand years ago, he would have had to have created the light mid stream on it's way to earth.
Conclusion: If god exists, he's a bit of a deceptive asshole, isn't he?

I wouldn't know about Hovind copying Morris, as I skipped that part of the debate entirely, and just watched the parts with Miller in. I know that's a bad thing, and that you should always listen to both sides of the debate, but I've listened to so many creationists debate over the years that I just couldn't bring myself to endure it.

Pretty ironic to be called stupid by a proponent of 'intelligent design'. As I understand it, the speed of light is variable in media such as air and water, but is constant in a vacuum. There are some controversial theories that suggest that the speed of light can be variable in a vacuum under certain conditions, but they are not widely accepted by the scientific community.
And NO theory postulates that the light could have gotten here in 6,000 years instead of 13 billion.

AKA the shells of countless microorganisms that lived in oceans from earth's distant past built up opon eachother over MANY generations.
