I think he was trying to pass himself off as Alexia so that they would think she was still alive. But when he saw himself in the mirror and saw his wig was off, he freaked out. But in reality Alexia and Alfred had such close relationship, that when she perished, he just couldn't accept it. So I'm guessing that's why he lost his mind.
