  • I think that a successful, independent woman like her would not choose to do this dance unless she wanted to.

  • Joséphine avait un corps superbe et savait en jouer. les parisiens l ont découvert avant sa voix, car elle savait chanter parfaitement.

  • @thehmc1.. Well answer this. Why all of a sudden do you white people wanna claim us blacks when you see how talented we are back then she was considered black so she is now thats the reason so many mixed people say they are blacl because you all didnt want anything to do with them.. Im starting to believe it's true white people always wanna take things and say it is theirs.. Some people say im mexican but i'll be DAMNED if one of you whites tell me im not black, mixed or not don't try to claim

  • She was doing the Charleston which was considered SCANDALOUS back then. And the hip roll. And she had short hair. She was probably considered a slut, but without her, where would our entertainment be?

  • beyonce is a copycat

  • she was a comedian. its supposed to be goofy

  • I wonder if that dance was considered slutty back then o.o

    i love her xD

  • @OutsideInCrowd

    ......I am Black?

  • Stop with all this "one drop rule" shite, why can't black people just accept that Josephine herself knew she was BIRACIAL and had a white father? Christ what's so wrong with being half?? She was a beautiful, talented MIXED woman, why can't we just leave it at that? Why does she have to be black before black people can be proud of her?

  • @TheHmc1 First of all I'm tired of people who aren't black constantly redefining what blackness is. Yes we have been intermixed, but we share a common heritage, that's what makes us black.

  • @OutsideInCrowd agrees

  • @TheHmc1 josephine was hebrew not black or white

  • whacky?? but good!

  • whacky??

  • I love how Josephine was half nude sometimes and she didn't do it to be sexy. She did it to show the art of dance. Not like today where all female pop stas are half nude just for attention and money. Their image just screams "I'm easy and I'm only good for a one night stand". Whatever happened to nudity and semi nudity being an art form? When I look at Josephine Baker I actually see a WOMAN who's passionate about African dance. Oh how times have changed...

  • even if she was bi racial bavk in the day if u had a tear drop or 3/5 of black in u u were considered BLACK! dosent matter if u passed the papaer bag test (skintonetest) so white people she was black! u cant take credit for EVERYTHING!!!

  • @562nellybee It doesn't matter her dances are African inspired. Look at capoeria, salsa, and look at the joint defying dances all over Africa and American dances that came from them like krumping, etc. I love looking at Ethiopians twist their heads and bounce their shoulders, so many amazing things about culture people are ignorant too. That hip shaking came from some where she can just do it amazingly well! Just a shame no one knows anything about their culture.

  • @TheMordida oh, but it does matter----because they are. truth is enough and fortunately clubs the schoolyard and the streets were not only dance academies----for my people---but preservation sanctuaries---T.S.I.B, Albuquerque museum of Art and History, and final student of the late Ms.Katie Dunham, (founder of Dance Anthropology)

  • There was something frantic about that. lol

  • the full dance is lost ...man!

  • Beyonce couldent carry Josephine bakers dirty underware.

  • i have no idea why this was under my recommendations

  • jajajajjaja I don't know.. Its a little bit funny.. Like everybody gets carzy like the guy with the hat LOL 0:15

  • Personally i love to see artist pay homage to artist that inspire them.Beyonce paying respect to josephine is amazing and helping to keep that legacy alive.Josephine would have been..floored to see girls from the 21st century still looking to her as a blueprint for success.

  • DEJAVU - beyonce!!!

  • The guy at the end was hilarious!

  • Its amazing that footage from that era was preserved enough to still be usable.

  • @TheCaptainLulz Yeah, you're right, it's amazing this film survived. 90 percent of silent movies are gone. The old film went bad pretty quickly. If it starts to smell like vinegar then it's going bad. Sometimes when it got old it would kind of melt and turn into an unstable form of nitroglycerine which could detonate without even being touched.

  • I love it !!!

  • wow the quality back then

  • The "BLACK PEARL"was mixed her father was white the mother black.

  • Whoo, you all just don't want black people to have credit for shit do you. Well...somebody thought Josephine was black with an African jungle scene here. Africa has only one country with jungles, and that's the Congo in central Africa, the rest of Africa is desert, savanna, and coastal, and arid. I see the racist ignorance still plays itself today. Somebody thought she was black which is why she segregated aginst and made to enter through kitchens. This girl is from east St. Louis. She was black

  • @ThePharaoho Also, did you know that Josephine Baker was in the Resistance, during WWII. and, I believe, was decorated by the French government..?

  • @ThePharaoho thank u so much for explaining this to ignorant people.

  • uh...Best dance ever? I think so lol.

  • Josephine Baker Is Black , Stop With The Fuckery About Black People , She was black

  • @qetmoneyqohard She absolutely is - even though she kinda rejected the fact by lightening her skin with lemons.

  • The black woman, at her physical best, with her round derriere, arched back, well shaped waist, and sturdy legs, is a goddess and puts the shame the beauty of other races of women. White women plump their lips, add in butt implants, tan their skin risking skin cancer to look like darker women. Josephine was a black woman and you whites can try your best to claim her but you cannot. Your flat assedd bitches can never compare. And you age at 25.

  • @deep71483 Angry overweight welfare chick. Look out.

  • @deep71483 Black women today do the same, and butt implants are far more popular among black women, especially the dangerous illegal ones because of the stereotype that black women have big butts. Black women also bleach their skin and relax their hair often burning and scaring their skin and scalp.

In many studies (see a girl like me on youtube) black children prefer white dolls to black dolls because of this unfortunate inferiority complex among blacks. You have it. You just express it oddly.

  • @AshillaBeige wtf we bleach are skin? please tell me what researcher did this study?

  • at least people were moving with energy and not sitting or lying around like a lot of tussaud figures.

  • @Mikolounonen: why?

  • what did i just watch? wow, hip-hop was so bad back then, no wonder there was segregation. lol. i know, below the belt

  • @iamcarpetpython Hip Hop wasn't even around back then. >.>

  • @neecee401100 no, it's really true. she even confessed she drew inspiration from her during her live performances. even that apparition in the glass of champagne during th video of "naughty girl" isn't original

  • @neecee401100 there is NO new movement under the sun....just remember ...have some fun

  • @iamcarpetpython She is in France and there was no hip hop.

  • @iamcarpetpython And there was segregation in America because of ill bred hatred. Not because of a music genre that did not yet exist, in fact segregation and Jim Crow laws is the reason why Josephine left America and pursued a career in France, ignorance like.

  • @direnblue16 why would you even take my post seriously? people on yourtube always post comments about politics, and how smart they are. it's a 50yr old 19sec b&w video of ppl dancing. go sit ina bean bag chair.

  • @iamcarpetpython Seeing things like that just disturbs me, its just a dangerous way of thinking.

  • @direnblue16 you have zero uploads on youtube, and you dont have an account to can make playlists. you have no business being on here. ppl like you just get on here so you can comment, and be elitist ass holes. If you had something intelligent to say, especially about culture or politics, you would say it on a forum with like minded ppl, and not on youtube. ppl like you enjoy finding a place where they can find things that piss them off, vent themselves, and be the good guy doing it.

  • @iamcarpetpython Are you serious? I have an account so that I don't have to verify my age when every time that I want to watch a flagged video. I have nothing to vent about, I'm not pent up about anything, but yes I do make comments. You are way off base. I would never go and try to find something to piss myself off, you don't think very much before you post and I'm no one's good guy, I'm a human being and I bleed like everyone else.

  • @iamcarpetpython Don't try to string me in with some group of people, you don't know me at all, so don't try to define me. Your accusations are completely without basis I made a simple remark and you chose to vent, I shared my opinion and you condemn me for it. I'd rather take my politics seriously then idea of "Oh I better upload a video onto a website that I use for entertainment purposes!" Again a disturbing way of thinking, I am very offended.

  • @direnblue16 You should get an Oscar for that speech.

  • @iamcarpetpython It wasn't a speech, but I'll thank you for that compliment.

  • fabulous legs!

  • Wild man! Just plain wild!

  • R.I.P Josephine. :(

  • @vintagechica82: I think they would have... Grace Jones had to go to Europe to pursue her dreams of being a model, and they loved her. Grace is very dark and has a wide nose... She's also very striking

  • Europeans look down on Americans for being so racist that Josephine had to leave the country to pursue her dreams, but I wonder if they would have loved her the same if she had been 100% black i.e. if she had darker skin and a wider nose. Her mixed heritage is obvious.

  • @vintagechica82 OF COURSE THEY WOULDN'T. THAT'S THE FREAKING POINT. That's why modern AAs dont see how tremendous a difference is between being Black and being mulatto. In America you're just AA, go to Europe and check for yourself, they drool over biracials, because they are exotic in their homogenous countries and have all the features native White women want to have, tan skin, full lips.

BLACK women on the other hand are considered ugly.

  • @Rockstafeller RU KIDDING? In Paris and London: it's ridiculous how many white men you see with very dark African women. It's like insane and beautiful! It's wonderful to see. You are wrong, European men love black women very dark and remember they are getting a lot of African immigrants so that is why they go after that type. Trust me on this.

  • You are a joke. I've seen so many dark skinned black women who would put any woman to shame. You have a narrow idea of what beauty is. Why are the highest paid models all dark over in Europe? You are such a moron.

  • @vintagechica82

Answer from my Eastern European homeboys for "do you think Black women are beautiful?" - "those white looking ones from rap videos yeah, but in Africa hell no". nuff said.

  • @Rockstafeller why does it hurt you so much to find out the truth? black women - dark black women are getting a lot of European men. In a way, you would say it is a fetish it happens so much. In America, it might be different but you should see these white guys with young dark black girls. Amazing. So you are wrong and I know it pains you to hear it. Travel a bit more you would see.

  • @ginaginn44 ROFL, you said it yourself - "fetish". that's satisfying to you? being a fetish?

  • Africa is a continent, one of the most diverse continents. All Africans do not look the same. Your ignorant Russian friends may believe all Africans look like Idi Amin which is not the case. They come from various phenoytypic features. All human life originated in Eastern Africa. Black women are ugly to you because the racists have brainwashed you. Believe me, God doesn't make ugly. If you think all dark skinned women look like Idi Amin, you are a moron, lol.

  • @deep71483 ". All human life originated in Eastern Africa." - wtf that gotta do with the case? why do i fuckin hear afrocentric idiots repeating that shit all the time? humans didnt even look like modern ones back then and just because it originated there, there is ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION TO THIS MYTHICAL ABUNDANCE OF FEATURES from this fact hahahaha

  • @ginaginn44 how many crossover international successes in the showbusiness industry you know that look like india arie and are considered generally pretty, not weird like alek wek?

  • Are you a man? What man would put down the looks of a whole race of women? Weird. Sounds like something a jealous bitch would do.

  • European men have more class than white american men and are less racist.

  • Honestly, when I see white male/black female relationships, the female is usually very dark. I always believe it is the white men that tend to appreciate the natural haired, dark skinned black woman. Rocksta is talking out of his racist ass.

  • @deep71483 u mad, huh :DDD

there is so many wrong with what u said that i wont even start

and plz dont use this idiotic term "dark skinned black woman"

black people are fucking dark by default, seriously, u heard someone say "lightskinned european"?

  • Proves you know nothing about the diversity of Africa. Blacks come in multiple phenotypes that don't have to be mixed by outside cave dwellers and Arabs. You can't admit that the beauty of black women is unique and trumps your flat assed mop haired bitches any day of the week. At least black women keep their youth for a long time unlike your cave girls that crack at 25. Oh I'm not mad, just amused by your stupidity.

  • @deep71483 rofl yeah i see how amused you are

    get some selfesteem woman

and no one put down any race here, no one.

  • @deep71483

Seriously? Fuck off and stop being racist. The only reason a minority of white women tan their skin is because travelling abroad is popular. They want to look like they got enough money to fly abroad. It's a class and wealth thing, not a race thing. As for whites aging earlier, while that is true, unless you are a chain smoker, I doubt it will show up at 25. It's mainly because whites live in all sort of hot places now and their skin isn't designed for it, they're more delicate.

  • @deep71483 Yeah. Famous black athletes don't seem to agree with you. Many date and marry white women.

  • @Rockstafeller I have never in my life watched a music video with black women in it said to myself, "they look white" um black girls don't look white, we just don't.

  • Funny, they were sexing those 'dark African' women, just look at the mult-generation mulattos throughout America. Perhaps you Eastern Europeans may be racist, but western Europe is more appreciative of darker beauty. You are so stupid in your thinking. Why are all the popular fashion models from Africa, then?

  • @vintagechica82 Nina Simmone too...nothing about her looks mixed and they loved her there!

  • @vintagechica82 She was not directly biracial... It's a known that a large majority of ALL African-Americans have one or two caucasion grandfathers(the number of generations back depends) due to their ancestors enslavement in North America. Both her parents were considered Black. It is indeed rare to find any African-American alive today or yesterday who does not have this mix race heritage/

  • @ljpmusic yes, actually there are speculations of her father being White.

and MOST AAs do not have racial makeup like Josephine Baker, obviously, duh.

    multigenerational, 1st generational, mulatto regardless.

  • @Rockstafeller Please ask any AA you know and they will give you the same information i did. We are unable to tell how many white grandfathers we have because of the situation ending in 1865. Though genetic studies have already indicated that over 40% of AA have ancestry tracible to Europe. Its in our DNA. So if both of your parents have tracible European DNA you look like Josephine or most AA. Nothing malicious here, just nerdy science talk from me.

  • @ljpmusic09 "MOST" AAs DO NOT look like Josephine, neither have racial makeup like her.

  • No, most African Americans are genetically mixed people like Josephine thanks to the white slave masters not keeping their dicks off the black slave women. Most African Americans have at least 25- 30% Caucasian DNA from the paternal side. As well as many people who claim to be 'white' may have some form of recent black ancestry.

  • @deep71483 lmaooo at those percentages you do not look like Baker, you must have never seen a biracial person, although that would be weird considering the president

  • Cave boy, your women have the flattest asses and try their best to have the plump lips and full asses of black women. Your ancestors couldn't wait to stick their dicks into these chocolate goddesses while white mistress was waiting in the background. So they spread lies about black women. Perhaps you are thirsting for black pussy that your pale-pink, pimply small dick can never get. Upon seeing a ravishing dark beauty, your lice infested, shit smelling Russian butt buddies will be in awe.

  • @deep71483 omfg who are you talking to? fucking racist..

  • @ljpmusic09 having a white grandfather all the way back to 1800s does not make you look like her either.

  • she was a spy DO DA KNOWLEGE

  • @MrInternetDude Racist asshole, dude. go back to your Klan meeting, fuckwad.

  • @slownoman i dont care what colour of race she is, i just saying what she does is showing of her body for fame and fortune.

  • @MrInternetDude Just like the vast majority of modern day actresses, singers, and dancers- only braver and more talented. Prig.

  • @slownoman acctually you are not that wrong, but still she is a fucking whore.

  • @MrInternetDude Considering the childhood she had to endure, and the fact that Ms. Baker had to leave her own country to get recognized (America being a nation of sexual hypocrites and closet clowns), and her amazing philanthropy, I find it a shade harsh to conclude she was a "fucking whore". I smell a teabagger.

  • @slownoman i smell a Fan.

And i love tea bagging, specially on my PS3 in MW2

  • @MrInternetDude You smell, period. I'm aware of Ms. Baker, not a fan. I don't do fan crap; that's for adolescents like yourself. Now, back to teabagging your cousin.

  • @slownoman Thanks, i will be going back to Tea bagging, NOOBS like U.

  • @MrInternetDude ...Yeah? And how is that different from--Madonna, Beyonce, Cher, GaGa or the talentless likes of Brittney etal? A girls got to get ur attention 1st, right. You surely wouldn't notice if she dressed like a bag-lady...(no offense, BL's out there). L'Baker paved the way for all who strive for artistic freedom; albeit revolutionary or mundane. Brava! & Merci brave angel.

  • @sfbranmuff I hate all of them but to be honest madonna is talented, and im not talking about talent, im talking aout self awarness which all of them including Baker.

  • Shake it and break it Josephine!

  • los pollos hermano's

  • thank you for uploading! That's pure gold, thanks ^^

  • my goodness Josephine Baker was a beautiful woman, sweet body and booty too!

  • Josephine Baker was great. Was that a couple seconds of Joe Frisco at the end?

  • looks to me like shes dancing punta

  • @TheConvictswife haha yeah It seems like if she were.

  • beyonce gets her inspiration from here

  • @samanthake Who is Beyoncè and who is Josephine Baker? There are light years between the two of them.

  • Ouaaaaaaaaais j'a

  • i vu les bananeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees*

  • Roaring Josephine! Very inspiring!

  • I made a video about her in my channel of her dancin josephine among the best female dancers of our generation check my channel! thx

  • I made a video about her in my channel of her dancin josephine among the best female dancers of our generation check my channel! thx

  • See: Sirens of The Roaring 20's Josephine Bakers career, lovers and what happened to her after 1930. She made the banana dance famous at The Follies Bergere in Paris after thrilling white crowds at The Cotton Club and lived in France for most of her life; 7 marriages (an affair with Ernest Hemingway) and a rainbow tribe of children.

  • Great video! Thank you! Where did you find it?

  • Gosh, This was waaaaaayyyyyy back in the

1920s, My grandmother's mother was born

in 1920s, But my great-grandmother died

in 1986. (My mom's momma momma, My

    grandma's momma)

  • your lame who talks about that

  • She was the most talented, beautiful, and caring artist of all time. Thank you for this vid.

  • cause u knew her so well...

  • Yes Mr. choice, I did.

  • She was incredible

  • wow such a cool video

  • O my.......

  • You'd look the fool dancing like that today...

  • Are you sure? Check a few dancehall videos. Oh wait, you were right.

  • You look like an idiot now yourself. Those dances weren't meant to be done now. We evolved jackass.

  • where do u find these old vids from

  • lol

  • Comment removed

  • she had a gift and believed we could settle our differences and it did help she dances lovely and may she rest in peace

  • The roaring 20s was wild uninhibited period! I love it! I don't know if that's because all the old footage looked sped up or what...but it's so interesting to see people of that time being so uninhibited and hip. Josephine was really something.

  • now thats DANCING!;P

  • Josephine, God don't make women like you anymore. LOVE YOU.

  • Oh, doesn't he?

Then I stop believing in him - he disappointed me too much anyway ;-)

  • God does make people like her, just that people dont persue it. Nowadays we all want the easy way.. everytime a lil problem shows up we tend to give up easliy and blame God in fact those things make us strong people. She never had it easy but yet she stood for what she believed. We go through certain things due to the decision we make.People want god to work for them and yet they dont do his work... am not judging u, its just a general statement.

  • ...I think you don't judge me cause there's no reason.

    Thanks.

    Wish you a nice week.

  • Josephine rocks.

  • She shakin' that ass... Josephine, Quelle revelation!!!!

  • lol..

  • A pioneer is every sense!!

  • I just read a bio that said when she came on stage dancing this, the cry of "What an ass!" lept from the male students in the front rows. Looks like the costume, unfortunately has been added-to in the film. Too bad.

  • Does any 1 know of a decendant also of the same name who works at the University of Greenwich she looks alike?

  • The only child Baker had died, the rest were all adopted, so she has no direct descendants.

  • "the rest were adopted" U should be carefull with your formulation, her 12 kids were HER children. biological or adopted MY child is MY child, and I've got only love 4 them.

wonder what kind of mom U are and hope U'll never adopt any children if U someone able to make a difference

  • No, offense, but let's be honest, if someone is saying that the descendent of one of the children looks like Josephine Baker, how could that be possible when genetically they have none of the same traits. I find ur philosophy however sweet, to be illogical.

  • whaoh ! so if a child is not geneticaly ur descendant, he's not ur child ? we're a lot of parents caring about heart, not traits or color. As Joséphine

don't find ur mind mostly openned sweety !

  • I'm not saying that they are not her children, I am saying genetically they are not related, therefore physically the traits could never be there. If a European woman decides to adopt a Nigerian child, how are they supposed to physically look related. the love is there, but it is missing the logic.

  • "mostlyopenminded" said "LOOKS" like her. they are her child, but they dont look like her cause they have the genes of someone else :)

  • way to project...

  • i just read about her in class but i never thought any of her stuff would be as funny as THIS!!! LOL!

  • it was hear aura, excitement the provocation that was completely new to europe, it was the new dance and move of the age that made her such a popular sensation. she knew how to make a show, a celebration... during the ww2 Josephine Baker stayed in France through nazi occupation, adopted kids and ha an orphanage...great lady!

  • harlem was a different place compared to 1920's paris. It's like leaving 1950's misissipi and moving to newyork.

  • Josephine Baker is legend, and an inspiration.

  • Seem's like a bunch of hating going on. Shake them haters off with your dance Josephine.

  • I know she was considered a big part of history but at best if she hadnt left NY she wouldnt have acheived much. Shes basically a very good shake dancer which at that time was a dime a dozen in harlem. She didnt even leave the usa because of racism she left because Le revue negre wanted Ethel waters a much bigger star at that time Ethel refused and so did gertrude saunder so Josephine baker went, they loved her and she stayed. She was indeed very lucky

  • Aww I LOVE JOSEPHINE BAKER :)

  • bewunderswerter Mensch, große Künstlerin;

leider ist das bessere video durch böse
