Of course it was not a hit for them. Back in those good old racist days black folks would record a song, then the recording companies would get white singers to re-record the songs and the songs became hits. It sucks. but that was the way it was for black singers back then. This is the best version, in fact, the entire album is off the chain.
I remember hearing this a little older than when it came out, but let's face it thank goodness by that time we all were able to hear the songs that came out just a bit before we really had any interest in music. Where I grew up in Virginia, everyone listened to "Night Train." I have no doubt that would have been where I would have heard this. Thanks for this nostalgic post.
@punanilicker1409 Quite honestly, I only knew the station as simply "Night Train." As I mentioned in the comment, this was a station here in Virginia. If Bob Terry was affiliated with "Night Train;" it was not a anything that I remember or was aware of. To me it was simply "Night Train." Trust this at least sheds a little light on it. Again, it was in Virginia. :)
Released in 1959, but never a major hit until 1961. It just goes to show that some great records can turn into a hit the second time around. Great song.
Much better recording, The music made this song good as well as the vocals. The lazy laid back sound especially from the guitar is poignant. The musicians did a good job. This recording sounds better than most of the remastered recordings which the vocals drown out the music.
Girl groups of that era are wonderful, we love them, and they usually can't be topped. (Even the Beatles couldn't top the Shirelles' "Baby It's You".) But Papa John Phillips made a masterpiece of this song.
Speaking of the Shirelles-Beatles connection, the girls' original version of "Boys" is really quite good, if you ever come across it.
I swear, one of them is my mom!

I loved the gentle version of this song by the Mamas and the Papas. Didn't know the Shirells sang it. I really like the way they sang this.
