Please do not think that I am defending anyone, Shane or any of the other guys that you listed. Yes we do repent, that is part of it, but it is to repent from an old way of life. Then what do we do? Continue life and repent again, and again...That way did not work for the guys in the old testament. We needed to see how to live the life that God longed for us to live. So He sent His son to demonstrate His way of life. God is Love, so the Love way of Life. We live a life of love He draws people to
It's easier to just say "okay I'm wrong, and I probably should live a little differently." Then put down the stones and enjoy the rest of the message.
My brother, i am reading your book..I knew what has happened to you when you touched Jesus...same thing is happening with me..Meet you in heaven...Love to you...God go with you all the way..Terrance Karthak, from India..
But, some of you probably condemn people for eating certain kinds of meats. READ YOUR BIBLES!!!!!!!!!! and stop preaching what you don't understanding. Without love you do not know the truth and yes, that includes the cultures of others. Take a penny and view the head as a current culture without Christ, now flip it over and view it as a culture with Christ. BEING WHITE DOES NOT MAKE YOU A CHRISTIAN, neither does white culture.
and if you're a Christian because you think America is a Christian country, YOU ARE FOOLED,. WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read your Bible for once and not the books of men talking about the Bible.
I think some of you need to think outside of the boxes that others have formed for your minds and your spirituality. For one, this debate about changing culture, you are aware that GOD OWNS THE WORLD, so if one culture lacks rain and they pray to a false God, it's perfectly acceptable to dance in the rain for Jesus, for God. It's not about forcing western culture into the mouths of others, it's about introducing their hearts to Christ. Some of you Christians are only Christians based on culture.
Wow...this is what more of us Christians and the whole world need to hear. If we don't get out there and be Jesus to the world than what is the point of even existing? If a Christian won't do their part to make a difference for the Lord why are we even alive? I went on a mission trip last year where we were stripped of every comfort and freedom and I saw just how spoiled we are when all we should need is to be in Gods hands and spreading the joy of His gift of Salvation to others!
the reason people get angry at shane is because they havnt detached themselves from the world yet. The flesh cannot know truth and cannot know freedom.
I got to hear him when he came to speak in Ottawa with a couple friends. :) I think he's doing some great work, and I really admire what he's doing. You know, I don't think he's a propenant of the so called Social Gospel," I think he simply wants to integrate our call to love our neighbour in a Christian culture that's frankly become very worldy. Exhibit A: myself. :( Keep praying for him, because he's the type that Satan probably really wants to trip up.
This is the first time I've heard Shane (I was sent the video by my sister). I was just wandering if he has any videos out where he presents The Gospel?
I'm not interested in being a Christian, that is not my path, yet I'm so grateful that finnally someone like Shane Claiborne is coming to the front to remove the rigid, righteous, chosen ones, fuddy duddies. I'm older and I say to the young Christians, wake up!
I refuse to ever become Christian because I don't believe the only way to reach God,(if there is one) is through Jesus. But at least Shane Claiborne tries to live out Christs message of love and leave the judging to a God.
I am compleltely inspired by this guy, filled with hope! It's outpouring of the holy spirit. A light in the darkness for many young disciples of Jesus.
I went and heard Shane speak tonight; I was really wondering about his message and if he hadn't forgotten the heart of the gospel, but God really assured my heart through his words. :) I recommend his books and challenge each of you to live that love of Jesus in the way you are called, following Jesuseven when where He leads is hard. Love God and love your neighbour.
Shane spoke in my chapel a while back. He put into words what I have always felt in my heart. I may not agree with all he says but he seems to truly have the heart of Christ. The world needs more Christians who love and fewer who judge. Thanks for posting!
I'm reading The Irresistible Revolution and I love it. Everything that he says is so duh in-your-face type attitude, which is exaclty what Christians need to hear. The reason why some Christians are upset with him is because he is disturbing our comfort zones, and we don't want to see that that's exactly what Jesus did. He was a revolutionary. He shook things up and disturbed those who thought they had it all together. We have to become uncomfortable with the comfortable.
@HipSkool Exactly! Amen! That's what even Christians don't understand. When the lord said the road to glory was narrow, he wasn't lying! People don;t understand this world is an illusion, and they fall in love with it. It's only a mortal experience.
what is it about shane that angers christians? He isn't teaching salvation by works. he isnt preaching that we should embrace other faiths. He is just saying that we ought to obey God as we are his children. We should love the poor. He is meaning that we embrace PEOPLE not beliefs while holding on to our own exclusive truth. Unless I missed something, I don't know. But why would Christians be angry at him? Is it just because he is living radically? Or does it get theological? Thanks.
@lilsuwatch I think the only ones that are angry are the ones that don't really read the bible or pay attnetion to what it is to be a TRUE Christian. After all it's the so called Christians of the world [such as ones that hold up GOD HATES FAGS sings] that many non-believers tend to group us with. They talk the talk but they don't walk the walk. It's pretty hard for most people.
i think its cos hes confident that he understands the what jesus meant, and i think that might scare a lot of the type of christians who accept and believe wat jesus taught, but dont think about or act on what he actually said. people try to over-analise the bible, second-guessing the possible other meanings of the word, and in contrast shane has pointed out that the teachings of jesus are very simple, and that what people lack is not the understanding, but the courage to act.
@lilsuwatch Jesus doesn't command us to embrace people. He commands us to "repent, lest we perish.." (Luke 13:3) That is His primary command, a side effect of repentence and faith in Christ is that we embrace people. Shane's heart is right, his theology is wrong. He preaches a social gospel of welfare, Jesus preached a gospel of repentence and forgivness.
actually the gospel Jesus preached was LOVE. John 13:34 Jesus says "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as i have loved you, that you love one another." Jesus did not abolish the law but rather fulfilled the law and gave us another one, a new commandment. Romans 13:8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. The whole Bible is a Love Story of how God loves us and Jesus is God's love expressed... embrace?
@AbsoluteClimate To love one another in the since to tell them the truth. The truth is, the Kingdom of Heaven requires righteousness and few will find it (Matt 5:10, 7:13), and given that man is not righteouss (Romans 3:10) and has rejected God (Romans 3:11), and the cross is foolishness to his hears (1 Cor 1:18) he will be thrown into a fiery furnace (Matt 13:42). But, there is good news. If you ask, seek, and knock on the eternal door of Christ to convict you of your sin and have faith that
@AbsoluteClimate Christ died for you while you were still a sinner (Romans 5:8) meaning that his blood was an atonement sacrifice for you and with it you have redemption and forgivness of sin (Eph 1:7). Shane Claiborne, Rob Bell, Brian Mclaren, Don Miller, Greg Boyd, Tony Campolo, or any other of the Emergent false prophets will never preach that.
Himself and they see a new way, a way of life that compels them to repent into a new way of life and a demonstration by the grace of God of how to LIVE. Just as Paul said, Follow me as I follow Christ. What does that look like? I would dare to say that it would look like what Shane is sharing, a life of Love. So the question is not to repent or not, yes repent, but then what do we do? I love you and do not wish to hammer at others over the net, so with this may God be with us all...
@AbsoluteClimate Yes, but Shane dosent preach that. Shane preaches a social gospel and mysticism. He believes that one can "experience" God in a variety of ways apart from the Bible, in fact I question whether or not he is a universilist, b/c his mentor,Tony Campolo, says that "even if people do not convert, they are Gods people"...Jesus makes it very clear that the poor will always be among us (Matt 26:11) yes, we are to serve them, but our mission is not to make this life more endurable but to
@AbsoluteClimate share the hope we have with in us (1 Peter 3:15). I have never heard Claiborne refer to mans depravity, the exclusivness of Jesus, His atonement for sin, nothing on the Holy Spirit, etc. He is a liberal political activist who uses smooth talk and flattery (Romans 16:18) while name dropping Jesus to preach a false gospel of works. Paul somes it up best: "If I give all I possess to the poor and give my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing." (1 Cor 13:3)
@AbsoluteClimate The love Paul is talking about is the love of the Father which gives everlasting life (John 3:16), not the cheap handouts of Claiborne.
@lilsuwatch Well, this 'Christian' isn't angry with him. I am so glad to hear people preaching the thoughts, beliefs, and enlightening I've held since the early 70's!! It's validating and affirming. I am so with him....
It's because the majority of modern 'Christians', don't recognize Christ anymore. Therefore, they do not recognize His truth, or His manner of working through His church. (Church as in people, not building.) It wouldn't be a surprise then, that I'm sure people of many different 'types' of Christianity, resonate with individuals 'not of their color' of Christianity. Because Christ recognizes Christ, and the Spirit of God brings the people of God together.
I had the blessing of knowing this guy at Peoples Church Toronto and heard this message which moved me a lot. May GOD bless Shane even more as well as his ministry.
a person converts to Christianity, the must accept Christian beliefs and culture. They cannot do the dances of their native cultural religion, they cannot revere the texts of their native cultural religion, they cannot pray the prayers, or hold the concept of god that their native cultural religion teaches.
it is really all about love man. Yes, it is only through Jesus Christ. If you don't accept him then yes, you are damned. But if you do you get life eternal. It's not about pleasiing everyone... it is about what is true being true. the truth is the truth, regardless of what people's "cultural religion" is. Jesus is the way truth and the life. Jesus changed my whole life, while religion did nothing but wear me out. Jesus gave me real freedom. Don't knock it till you try it!
In greek the new testament say pa ta ta ethna. make disciple of EVERY culture. You can an asian christian, and emo christian, a hip-hop christian, or whatever.
Christianity, like Islam, has no room for the beliefs of others. The concept that people can dwell together in peace and harmony, without being religious clones, doesn't exist. The principles behind these religions are tearing our world apart. You can go back to those ancient words, and try to apply them all you want to the modern world, but every attempt will fail and only make sense to the person who first bases their whole thought system on those ancient words.
Dude religion isn't tearing our world apart. Humans have found many different ways to destroy each other without religion being the driving force. And I'm not saying we can all live in peace. World peace will never come to this planet. Humans have tried at that for centuries and failed. It just won't work because humans are fallible. And dude your last sentence doesn't make sense. All of our though is based on ancient; our customs, government, foods, recipes, ideals. Guess where those came from
Religion IS a part of culture. Christianity expexts a person deny the religious myths, customs, celebrations, and beauty of their own culture and adopt a new culture. If a person grows up a Hindu, reading the Vedic scriptures, and singing the Hindu songs and participating in all the celebrations of Hindu culture, and then they convert to Christiantiy, they are expected to "change" their culture.
that's a lie. they can still do all that and still be a Christian. I know God knows how many Christians who read from other scriptures and other ancient texts but pledge their allegiance to Christ. As far as I'm concerned, all you have to do to love God and neighbor to live like Christ. They were even arguing about this in Acts 15. And they agreed that you don't have to change your culture to be Christian. I don't care what so called Christians say or do. That's biblical scripture.
I think that Shane could get his message across without pointing out what others did wrong. And he does this over and over again through out the message. It is the way he is putting it out to people. I think that is it. Lisa
What is more interesting, is that Islam seems to make the same bold claims...there are only the saved, the Muslims, who accept things our way, and the rest are the damned.
These two armies are marching, on a collision course with each other. The peaceful philosophy fuels the war machine, every bit as much as the pugilistic fundamentalist side.
It's funny you should mention that because back in the Jewish Old Testament there is a prophecy that says(this is also in Revelations) that there will be a new world religion that everyone will flock too. These things were written down wayyy before Islam even existed. I think it goes back to Abraham's children to where one of his sons would bear the lineage leading up to Jesus and the other would wage war against that lineage. Now Islam and Jews are at war I highly doubt this is just coincidence
I would ask Claiborne to explain this....why is it that love and peace and equality seem so important to some Christians, but they ignore that their religion essentially teaches that there is no equality? Why do these two religions only offer one choice...life or death? Conversion or doom?
Why don't you think Christianity shows equality? Especially when Jesus say love your neighbor as yourself as one of the top two highly regarded commandments. He's telling us that we are equal to the rest of humanity. Why else would I show the same care and concern for someone that show to myself?
I applaud Shane Claiborne. I may not agree with everything he says but he lives his life closer to the gospel than most I know. At least he's trying to live for God and display His love. I mean, at least he's doing something more than placing negative comments on youtube and starting ignorant arguments that get nowhere because guess what? YOU'RE ON YOUTUBE.
He is not condemning the US. But the scriptures enjoin us to RISE ABOVE nationalistic ideas (Galatians 3:28. Being "patriotic" undermines our spiritual lives. Flags, systems of government etc are all false idols; reject them immediately. Let's get rid of them. Let's follow Jesus and Jesus alone, not Jesus as repackaged by the American right. Jesus does not love Americans more than Iraqis or Palestinians or Russians. We need to be Christians, not Americans or Australians etc.
The Bible mentions the importance of government. God used the government of Israel to do His will.
and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: 'If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.' -- 1 Kings 2:4
God was concerned with governments. The thing we need to understand is that Christianity does not take a political stance. The people do that.
No. I actually believe the best form of government man can successfully maintain in a fallen world is capitalism. The ideal form of government is more of a voluntary socialism (not operated by the government, simply a desire to work and to share out of love for each other), but our sin would destroy that in a heartbeat. My only point in the above was stated clearly: God is not against government. I must say that the God who used governments in mercy and in wrathe is the same God we worship today
I totally believe the followers of Christ should transcend nationalism, but not do away with it. Nations are important. Let me put it this way: regardless of government, we are called to love God (1st 3 Commandments) and love others (the other 7 of them). Kids go to school, adults work at jobs, yet that is not what we live for. We live for God. In the same way we function in society, including government, but we live for God. Paul wrote on how churches should be governed as well. It's necessary.
The instinct to love one another is common to almost all humans.
The Christian manipulation of the idea of love is "you MUST love me or I'll BURN you ... forever" I'm sorry but it's simply a ridiculous (and immoral) concept.
I apologize on behalf of anyone who has ever told you that. We were made to love, but all humans fail to love in many ways... ALL of us. Loving one another is not the key to heaven, and neither is loving God. The only way we escape this "burning" is by accepting the merciful gift God offers us. He suffered hell (in the form of a human) in our place, and he kept the law in our place. I love God because he loved me enough to do that, and I can love others because the One I love loves them.
Capitalism is pretty good but there still needs to be some empathic decisions made by the majority that need to be enforced upon the few - laws against violence and environmental destruction for example.
The comment was directed to those who do believe in God. Well the government can never act out of love. People can. People who work in government can, but a government is just a symbol, a symbol of authority. It cannot love, or hate for that matter. The government can govern our actions, but people perform these actions. Also, beside th point, the federal government is the few, and we the people are the majority.
"Well the government can never act out of love. People can."
The government is a representative of the majority's will. If the majority want to express love the government will show it - for example foreign aid, homeless shelters, nature reserves.
the government can ABSOLUTELY express hate also - most obviously war!
Unfortunately the government is to often open to minority control, that's because the type of person who want's to be a politician is mostly exactly who should never be allowed in!!!
You have a right to your opinion, but I believe that love is expressed on an individual, personal basis. Let's say you are a good customer of your bank, and you get a customer appreciation letter from the company that you know is obviously a generic letter sent to all customers who store a certain amount of wealth in the bank. Now let's say you get a handwritten letter from the bank president himself thanking you for your business. Which is prefered? the hand written one, the PERSONAL one.
Bad example too - either way a bank has a vested interest in keeping you satisfied, that's definitely not love.
No government of the world works well for the reasons I described earlier, however when a shipment of humanitarian aid arrives in a starving village, what other explanation could there possibly be, other than the physical expression of group love?
When a group of firefighters work to save someone is that just a job?
I think you missed my point, or maybe rather disregarded it. The example had little to do with love, but illustrated our natural preference to the "personal touch". When I give to someone in need, that is a good thing, They are grateful. When I demonstrate that I do care about him by spending time with him and getting to know him, even just having conversation, I am addressing a greater need, his need to be LOVED, which is different than his physical need. I can be kind without love.
The group can love, but that is entirely dependent on each individual within the group actually choosing to love. If one is uninvolved with the work being done, even if he is a part of the group, he is not expressing love. I beieve that love is evident by works, but that works without love is relatively meaningless. The point is that works without love is a possibility. Often this is the case with governments.
Whether you express love by investing time and an ear or by helping out with physical challenges the root inspiration is still the same.
At face value an investment of time is more valued as it shows a real interest rather than perhaps, just a feeling of guilt. Then again it all depends on the amount of time vs the size of the donation.
I'm sure a five minute conversation would bean a lot but a donation of an hours wages is perhaps more generous/loving.
Yes. That is what I was trying to say. I have a different opinion of the value of money. God provides for us when we have need. Sometimes it is in the form of money, and almost always it involves other people acting in love and obedience to God. I'm not telling you to believe this; it is just my belief. I would disagree about the size of the donation. Maybe the significance of the donation is the real issue. How much does the donor sacrifice of himself for another person, either time or money.
"Maybe the significance of the donation is the real issue. How much does the donor sacrifice of himself for another person, either time or money."
Agreed.
"God provides for us when we have need. Sometimes it is in the form of money, and almost always it involves other people acting in love and obedience to God."
I could agree with that but I guess you are talking specifically about the Christian god? In which case iyo what is it that makes Atheists (for example) donate?
I was referring to the Christian god. I think that everyone has the capacity to do good works. The only thing that separates a christian from anyone else, atheists included, is the christian's acceptance of God's gift of salvation from our deserved punishment and his receiving of the Holy Spirit. In knowing God's love, a christian can find it easier to love others. Christians have not been made good, just justified (declared righteous) in the sight of God. It is merely our responsibility to love
If you assume my God exists, and take into account all that the Bible says about God, you can maybe get a small grasp of greatness and authority of God. If God created me, gave me life, and is literally more powerful and more awesome than my mind can ever hope to begin to understand, then God deserves my obedience. Also, Hell is simply the complete absence of God, separation from Him. Our souls are eternal, and they will spend eternity either in His presence or His absence.
He gave us the ability to CHOOSE to love Him, and we have failed in our disobedience. God still loves us, and gave us another option through his gift of salvation. God manifested himself as a human to suffer everything we suffer on earth. He kept all of the Commandments as a human, resisting all temptation. He became the only human ever to get it right. Christ took it upon himself to suffer hell in our place (the clean sacrifice that the Jews had used animals to symbolize until then).
"He gave us the ability to CHOOSE to love Him, and we have failed in our disobedience."
1. That's contradictory. Either we have a choice OR we have to obey.
2. If god intended for us to do anything, it would be impossible for us to do anything else unless there is interference form outside ... which is impossible if everything comes from god.
"He kept all of the Commandments as a human, resisting all temptation."
Well of course - he makes all the rules for us but remains omnipotent himself.
"Well of course - he makes all the rules for us but remains omnipotent himself. "
Omnipotent? Didn't He die? Even if He was just a prophet/man He still became obedient unto death. How did he not be subject to the law of sin and death as are we?
"How did he not be subject to the law of sin and death as are we"
Simple, because (apparently) Jesus only suffered hell for three days, then he ascended to heaven - hardly comparable to eternal damnation. Also as an omnipotent being by definition god can do anything effortlessly.
You should ask these people who say once you die and go to hell you are there for eternity?
I can't find it in the bible anywhere.
It does say in Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
It doesn't say anything about mankind being there for eternity.
"Christ took it upon himself to suffer hell in our place"
think about this in the context of what you wrote before about hell.
You are saying in order to appease himself god suffered absence of himself. Also god didn't suffer hell eternally as we aparently would so even if it did make sense how is that in any way equivalent?
Your first point deals with the Trinity paradox. Jesus said as he was on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" In other words, God the Father made himself absent to God the Son, which are separate but one. It is really only within the past few centuries and until very recently exclusive to western culture to reject paradox, to treat logic as truth instead of as a tool to learn truth. It's just the mindset of our culture that causes us to raise that question with such confusion.
I find it had to put into words the contrast between the enormity and magnificence of the universe (surely god's best reflection if you believe in god) and a book, I truly find, tells of nothing but ancient men's ego.
God is omnipresent therefore it's impossible for hell to exist. If everything is entirely god's creation, for god to be absent, I'd have to be separate from absolutely everything, including myself ... which makes no sense what so ever.
Psalm 139:8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
"Our souls are eternal"
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
How again is the soul eternal if God is able to destroy it?
Both are misinterpretaions. The word "hell" in this case is derived from a root word that means "grave". Hell is separation, as is our physical death (separation from the world). The "destruction" of our souls is synonymous with the "dying" of our souls, which again is simply separation from God. "Death" in every usage (apart from the personification of inanimate objects such as batteries) implies separation from something.
"I don't want preservation from destruction either"
I'm sure your request will be granted.
"....you can't do anything to help yourself. " Where do you find a remedy to fix a problem, be it self help or how to fix a car for example?
Do you believe for every question there is an answer, whether we know the answer or not?
I believe "Self can't help self when self doesn't know the practical application of the answer." And guessing isn't a science either. Self NEEDS an external influence.
I think I understand what you are getting at - that one need external influences ... I agree otherwise one might as well imagine you are living a perfect existence and never know any different.
BUT
I must also do something for myself - I can have all the information and best intentions but even if I know everything, I can't expect anything to happen without acting (helping) myself.
If it was as easy as just waving to Jesus and falling in line, life would be easy, pointless and dull.
On the contrary. That statement is lacking proof. Ex. If you never rode a rollercoaster then critiqued it you wouldn't have an audience that would buy your opinion.
Now I can see where you are coming from if you base your answer on what you see from so called christians but that's not good grounds on which to base an assumption as bold as, " life would be easy, pointless and dull. "
Yea, that was a crappy comment that dosen't even make sense, sorry!
What it all boils down to is that we are here to tell Yahweh how great and good he is.
Jesus's dies on the cross - God's creation is influenced by another of his creations to eat one of his creations. His then separates his creation from himself and he can only appease himself by somehow sacrificing himself to himself. His faithful creations he'd save from his retribution to his "love" and his sceptical creations he'd burn.
"self will that corrupts His creation" caused the separation.
Surely any self will that deviates from gods is some form of corruption, which then leads me to think the whole point of "free" will can only be to ensure man would eventually sin.
The other point that goes in tandom with that god could create whatever universe he wanted, so why would he create one in which he even made sin possible?
God has ensured his creation will have a will that deviates from his and also the means to sin.
deweyyyy: if you believe your nothing then you degrade the living God who brought you for it is He who created you and paid a great price. Maybe Shane doesnt know but that line is what Communist preaches, go check it out.
Haha... Well I don't think we can safely say that Christ is anti-communism. Now us Americans who love our free enterprise are anti-communism, but let's not even attempt to define a political view as "unchristian" unless it violates the teachings of Scripture. Also, I'm pretty sure that believing yourself to be a fool is far from believing you are worthless, "nothing". I can be pretty sure that I am not "worth" much, though. But God loves me anyway, so I don't have to worry about that.
Actually the Disciples & Jesus were practically the first "communists", the believed that the "common good is more important than the good of oneself" or something like that. In the scriptures (Acts) it says that the disciples lived in a house and shared EVERYTHING, and that's pretty much what communism is about, givin and recievin to/from other people what you/they need. Communism is not a dictatorship, what happened is that some "dictators" brought communism, but communism itself is an uthopy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He starts off speaking of the Gosple of man and all the entertianment. 1:09 What any of it had to do with Jesus. He was Methodist, 1:42 went forward and got born again. 1:50 He got born again, again and again. 2:06 He knew he was born again but didnt know how to follow? Interesting. Does Shane smoke weed??
I appreciate his passion for doing good works, just as I was in my 20's and did similar works. I just know that sometimes people can be lead away with emotion into error. I hope and pray this is not or will no happen to your generation. Remember it is the Truth in Love that we are called to live by and die for. Good works are a product of following Jesus who is the Truth and the fulfiller of the Law of God and the cleanser of our sins. That is True rebellion against the system 4 sure.
I read the comments here and I see so many who supoort these ideas. But yet are so easy to jump down someones throat, wasn't the point to love? Is love seen when you are trying to tell someone they are stupid, even if you aren't straight out saying 'you're dumb', you are still saying it in a round about way?
I'm kinda confused here, how did you pull anything out of this message than "love"? I'm not sure what voice you're listening to, but it doesn't sound like anything that Shane talked about. It sounds like a distortion of what he said... If anyone is pulling anything out of this than to be lovers, or if their life isn't based around loving, then perhaps they're hearing something other than God's voice.
I believe you are confused indeed. I speak of love from the video that is obvious and not just from this video but scripturally as well. I was talking about the people who watch this video then attack others through video comments if they disagree or make a statement against it.
This is the radical life I want to lead. The only thing that keeps us from doing it is fear, which shouldn't even be a part of our lives. You serve the people who are ranked lowest in society and in turn you help Jesus. :)
Whoa! Give me some of that O Lord so that I may be a blessing and an inspiration for others as my brother Shane has been to me. And bless him O Father so that he may continue spread the message of your Son and his love for this lost and dying world. To God be the Glory for his is love!
i like what Shane has to say in this video. I also believe that for me the scriptures really come alive when I help out at Mercy House (that's a house/chapel that serves the homeless in Downtown Dallas)
This dude has a great testimony. He's full of life. Last night i listened to his testimony at Elevate church in Hilo, HI. God spoke to me and told me to go down to a local park and play music in a park and just LOVE whoever was there. God set us up. There was a guy there that need to be encouraged. A fellow christian. God is asking us to be JESUS in our world. God wants to touch peoples lives. He wants to use you, to touch peoples lives.
The Good Book also says not to judge a man based upon his words but the fruits of his labor. George Bush has a lot of bad fruit. He almost killed the whole tree.
I wander what the United States Of America would think about Saul if he were alive today and murdering people. Hmmm???? Christ came for sick and not the healthy. You claim self-righteousness and I'll be the first to tell you that I am a sinner. A BIG ONE!!!!! The bigger the sinner the bigger the savior.
To the critics who claim that Shane broke the law by shacking up in a run-down church. The Church is God's house, not the Catholics who owned it. Everything of this world is God's, yet man tries to claim ownership. At least Shane is using the hands and the feet of Christ, which is driven by his heart. The entrance is narrow yet so many "believers" want to travel through it in their automobile and carry on their backs their houses.
Lay down your hate at the door when you walk into the kingdom of God. For it is not a kingdom of argumentative critics or the overly cynical ones poised with self confidence. It is a kingdom of love. You got money? give a little. You got love give it all until it hurts then give some more!! All glory be to our lord Yeshua!
Yes Religion is boring, but not a Jesus lifestyle. Not saying Shane is 100% correct in every aspect because no one is, but Jesus lived as the scriptures say and it's clear love is how he loved because it was perfect and that is what Shane is saying. Get over your doctrine, tradition, and what you been taught by man and get in the scriptures. That's what Shane is asking not to do as he does not that being wealthy is evil, but if you are wealthy what is Gods plan with your wealth?
Also, it wasn't wrong for them to take over the cathedral and live in it, it wasn't sinful. It was wrong and sinful of the Church to not allow the poor to live there, it was contrary to what God would call the church to do. "When any institution, including the church, is in contradiction with God, we must obey God" - Phoebe Palmer (Co-founder of the Church of the Nazarene).
It absolutely IS wrong to take over a Cathedral without prior permission. If people didn't see the areas under the bridges covered with trash and the shopping carts abandoned all over the place like I see from my home in Houston, they wouldn't be so hesitant to let the homeless take over their property. The problem with Shane is that he never mentions that the poor are at fault, EVER.
I am not sure why everyone is more on the side of allowing the church to NOT take care of homeless people and leave a church building abandoned while people sleep on the streets than they are about slapping the church in the head and telling them to get their head on straight. Also, in the Old Testament, the oppressed are deemed righteous simply by their standing as the one being oppressed! Regardless of their position as sinners or not, they're deemed righteous on account of being oppressed.
Ok, check it, it's my Gospel too and i have a right to say something about it. LittleJrt, you don't do any biblical exegesis on your passages and on top of that you quote scripture that is not there. Also, yes the bible does say something about carbon footprints when it says to take care of the poor (over 2k passages). Global climate changes affect the global poor the worst. It's a shame we've minimalized christianity to saving souls, it IS THAT and so much more. Shane doesnt exploit the poor.
Yea? I don't know what makes people think that humans(small) can stop the EARTH and the SUN (large and larger) from doing what it's going to do. As far as who it affects, it affects EVERYONE. Furthermore Shanes continuously mentioned solution is vegetable oil, which uses more energy to make than it actually produces, i.e. creates MORE heat. I agree that global climate is a problem, but I've yet to hear a reasonable solution.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
shane claiborne does nothing more than preach "love" by HATING things he deems non-lovers by some double standard of his. he tries to say that his stances are all religious and not political, but that's total nonsense. where does the bible say ANYTHING about carbon footprints? NOWHERE. but something you CAN find is the importance to respect those willing to die for you, the ultimate sign of love. Yet, he has no respect for those willing to die for him, such as U.S. soldiers. He is a hypocrite.

DaUndataka 11 months ago
Culture doesn't define Christianity, Christ does.

and if you're a Christian because you think America is a Christian country, YOU ARE FOOLED,.

DaUndataka 11 months ago
Wow...this is what more of us Christians and the whole world need to hear. If we don't get out there and be Jesus to the world than what is the point of even existing? If a Christian won't do their part to make a difference for the Lord why are we even alive? I went on a mission trip last year where we were stripped of every comfort and freedom and I saw just how spoiled we are when all we should need is to be in Gods hands and spreading the joy of His gift of Salvation to others!

I refuse to ever become Christian because I don't believe the only way to reach God,(if there is one) is through Jesus. But at least Shane Claiborne tries to live out Christs message of love and leave the judging to a God.

Thanks.
lilsuwatch 2 years ago 40
@lilsuwatch I think the only ones that are angry are the ones that don't really read the bible or pay attnetion to what it is to be a TRUE Christian. After all it's the so called Christians of the world [such as ones that hold up GOD HATES FAGS sings] that many non-believers tend to group us with. They talk the talk but they don't walk the walk. It's pretty hard for most people.
SkylarAlyxis 1 year ago

i think its cos hes confident that he understands the what jesus meant, and i think that might scare a lot of the type of christians who accept and believe wat jesus taught, but dont think about or act on what he actually said. people try to over-analise the bible, second-guessing the possible other meanings of the word, and in contrast shane has pointed out that the teachings of jesus are very simple, and that what people lack is not the understanding, but the courage to act.
puppetofmetallica1 1 year ago
@lilsuwatch If Jesus wall walking in the flesh today would He receive the same treatment? i think it's likely!
seph00007 11 months ago
@lilsuwatch Jesus doesn't command us to embrace people. He commands us to "repent, lest we perish.." (Luke 13:3) That is His primary command, a side effect of repentence and faith in Christ is that we embrace people. Shane's heart is right, his theology is wrong. He preaches a social gospel of welfare, Jesus preached a gospel of repentence and forgivness.
polycarp256 3 months ago
@polycarp256
actually the gospel Jesus preached was LOVE. The whole Bible is a Love Story of how God loves us and Jesus is God's love expressed... embrace?
AbsoluteClimate 3 months ago
@AbsoluteClimate To love one another in the since to tell them the truth. The truth is, the Kingdom of Heaven requires righteousness and few will find it (Matt 5:10, 7:13), and given that man is not righteouss (Romans 3:10) and has rejected God (Romans 3:11), and the cross is foolishness to his hears (1 Cor 1:18) he will be thrown into a fiery furnace (Matt 13:42). But, there is good news. If you ask, seek, and knock on the eternal door of Christ to convict you of your sin and have faith that
polycarp256 3 months ago

AbsoluteClimate 3 months ago
@AbsoluteClimate Yes, but Shane dosent preach that. Shane preaches a social gospel and mysticism. He believes that one can "experience" God in a variety of ways apart from the Bible, in fact I question whether or not he is a universilist, b/c his mentor,Tony Campolo, says that "even if people do not convert, they are Gods people"...Jesus makes it very clear that the poor will always be among us (Matt 26:11) yes, we are to serve them, but our mission is not to make this life more endurable but to
polycarp256 3 months ago
@AbsoluteClimate share the hope we have with in us (1 Peter 3:15). I have never heard Claiborne refer to mans depravity, the exclusivness of Jesus, His atonement for sin, nothing on the Holy Spirit, etc. He is a liberal political activist who uses smooth talk and flattery (Romans 16:18) while name dropping Jesus to preach a false gospel of works. Paul somes it up best: "If I give all I possess to the poor and give my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing." (1 Cor 13:3)
polycarp256 3 months ago
@AbsoluteClimate The love Paul is talking about is the love of the Father which gives everlasting life (John 3:16), not the cheap handouts of Claiborne.

@lilsuwatch Well, this 'Christian' isn't angry with him. I am so glad to hear people preaching the thoughts, beliefs, and enlightening I've held since the early 70's!! It's validating and affirming. I am so with him....
lovinSpoonful 2 months ago
@lilsuwatch
Because Christ recognizes Christ, and the Spirit of God brings the people of God together.

a person converts to Christianity, the must accept Christian beliefs and culture.

Christianity, like Islam, has no room for the beliefs of others. The concept that people can dwell together in peace and harmony, without being religious clones, doesn't exist. The principles behind these religions are tearing our world apart. You can go back to those ancient words, and try to apply them all you want to the modern world, but every attempt will fail and only make sense to the person who first bases their whole thought system on those ancient words.
citoyenjoseph 2 years ago
Dude religion isn't tearing our world apart. Humans have found many different ways to destroy each other without religion being the driving force. And I'm not saying we can all live in peace. World peace will never come to this planet. Humans have tried at that for centuries and failed. It just won't work because humans are fallible. And dude your last sentence doesn't make sense. All of our though is based on ancient; our customs, government, foods, recipes, ideals. Guess where those came from
Cshowbread 2 years ago

Religion IS a part of culture. Christianity expexts a person deny the religious myths, customs, celebrations, and beauty of their own culture and adopt a new culture. If a person grows up a Hindu, reading the Vedic scriptures, and singing the Hindu songs and participating in all the celebrations of Hindu culture, and then they convert to Christiantiy, they are expected to "change" their culture.
citoyenjoseph 2 years ago
that's a lie. they can still do all that and still be a Christian.

What is more interesting, is that Islam seems to make the same bold claims...there are only the saved, the Muslims, who accept things our way, and the rest are the damned.
These two armies are marching, on a collision course with each other. The peaceful philosophy fuels the war machine, every bit as much as the pugilistic fundamentalist side.
citoyenjoseph 2 years ago
It's funny you should mention that because back in the Jewish Old Testament there is a prophecy that says(this is also in Revelations) that there will be a new world religion that everyone will flock too. These things were written down wayyy before Islam even existed. I think it goes back to Abraham's children to where one of his sons would bear the lineage leading up to Jesus and the other would wage war against that lineage. Now Islam and Jews are at war I highly doubt this is just coincidence
Cshowbread 2 years ago
I would ask Claiborne to explain this....why is it that love and peace and equality seem so important to some Christians, but they ignore that their religion essentially teaches that there is no equality? Why do these two religions only offer one choice...life or death? Conversion or doom?
citoyenjoseph 2 years ago
Why don't you think Christianity shows equality? Especially when Jesus say love your neighbor as yourself as one of the top two highly regarded commandments. He's telling us that we are equal to the rest of humanity. Why else would I show the same care and concern for someone that show to myself?
Cshowbread 2 years ago

He is not condemning the US. But the scriptures enjoin us to RISE ABOVE nationalistic ideas (Galatians 3:28. Being "patriotic" undermines our spiritual lives. Flags, systems of government etc are all false idols; reject them immediately. Let's get rid of them. Let's follow Jesus and Jesus alone, not Jesus as repackaged by the American right. Jesus does not love Americans more than Iraqis or Palestinians or Russians. We need to be Christians, not Americans or Australians etc.
biggbern 3 years ago 4
The Bible mentions the importance of government. God used the government of Israel to do His will.
and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: 'If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.' -- 1 Kings 2:4
God was concerned with governments. The thing we need to understand is that Christianity does not take a political stance. The people do that.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
Madhouse, are you indeed suggesting the best form of government is a feudal system?
Biggbern, that is the kind of Christianity the world has been needing for 2000 years! Good luck with it =)
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
I must say that the God who used governments in mercy and in wrathe is the same God we worship today
madhouse2009 2 years ago
I totally believe the followers of Christ should transcend nationalism, but not do away with it. Nations are important. Let me put it this way: regardless of government, we are called to love God (1st 3 Commandments) and love others (the other 7 of them). Kids go to school, adults work at jobs, yet that is not what we live for. We live for God. In the same way we function in society, including government, but we live for God. Paul wrote on how churches should be governed as well. It's necessary.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
The instinct to love one another is common to almost all humans.
The Christian manipulation of the idea of love is "you MUST love me or I'll BURN you ... forever" I'm sorry but it's simply a ridiculous (and immoral) concept.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
I apologize on behalf of anyone who has ever told you that. We were made to love, but all humans fail to love in many ways... ALL of us. Loving one another is not the key to heaven, and neither is loving God. The only way we escape this "burning" is by accepting the merciful gift God offers us. He suffered hell (in the form of a human) in our place, and he kept the law in our place. I love God because he loved me enough to do that, and I can love others because the One I love loves them.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
"same God we worship today "
I don't worship any gods.
Capitalism is pretty good but there still needs to be some empathic decisions made by the majority that need to be enforced upon the few - laws against violence and environmental destruction for example.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
The comment was directed to those who do believe in God. Well the government can never act out of love. People can. People who work in government can, but a government is just a symbol, a symbol of authority. It cannot love, or hate for that matter. The government can govern our actions, but people perform these actions. Also, beside th point, the federal government is the few, and we the people are the majority.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
"Well the government can never act out of love. People can."
The government is a representative of the majority's will. If the majority want to express love the government will show it - for example foreign aid, homeless shelters, nature reserves.
the government can ABSOLUTELY express hate also - most obviously war!
Unfortunately the government is to often open to minority control, that's because the type of person who want's to be a politician is mostly exactly who should never be allowed in!!!
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
You have a right to your opinion, but I believe that love is expressed on an individual, personal basis. Let's say you are a good customer of your bank, and you get a customer appreciation letter from the company that you know is obviously a generic letter sent to all customers who store a certain amount of wealth in the bank. Now let's say you get a handwritten letter from the bank president himself thanking you for your business. Which is prefered? the hand written one, the PERSONAL one.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
Love can't be expressed as a group? Nonsense.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
I think you missed my point, or maybe rather disregarded it. The example had little to do with love, but illustrated our natural preference to the "personal touch". When I give to someone in need, that is a good thing, They are grateful. When I demonstrate that I do care about him by spending time with him and getting to know him, even just having conversation, I am addressing a greater need, his need to be LOVED, which is different than his physical need. I can be kind without love.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
The group can love, but that is entirely dependent on each individual within the group actually choosing to love. If one is uninvolved with the work being done, even if he is a part of the group, he is not expressing love. I beieve that love is evident by works, but that works without love is relatively meaningless. The point is that works without love is a possibility. Often this is the case with governments.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
I see what you're saying now.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
How much does the donor sacrifice of himself for another person, either time or money.
madhouse2009 2 years ago

It is merely our responsibility to love
madhouse2009 2 years ago
"salvation from our deserved punishment"
One reason I'm not christian, I don't need salvation and I don't deserve eternal burning! Anyway that's not really an interesting point of discussion.
"In knowing God's love, a christian can find it easier to love others"
I presume by "knowing gods love" you are talking about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross?
This would only make sense to me if Jesus was not god. A man, even a prophet sacrificing himself is not unique but surely an astonishing gesture
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
If you assume my God exists, and take into account all that the Bible says about God, you can maybe get a small grasp of greatness and authority of God. If God created me, gave me life, and is literally more powerful and more awesome than my mind can ever hope to begin to understand, then God deserves my obedience. Also, Hell is simply the complete absence of God, separation from Him. Our souls are eternal, and they will spend eternity either in His presence or His absence.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
He gave us the ability to CHOOSE to love Him, and we have failed in our disobedience. God still loves us, and gave us another option through his gift of salvation. God manifested himself as a human to suffer everything we suffer on earth. He kept all of the Commandments as a human, resisting all temptation. He became the only human ever to get it right. Christ took it upon himself to suffer hell in our place (the clean sacrifice that the Jews had used animals to symbolize until then).
madhouse2009 2 years ago
"He gave us the ability to CHOOSE to love Him, and we have failed in our disobedience."
1. That's contradictory. Either we have a choice OR we have to obey.
2. If god intended for us to do anything, it would be impossible for us to do anything else unless there is interference form outside ... which is impossible if everything comes from god.
"He kept all of the Commandments as a human, resisting all temptation."
Well of course - he makes all the rules for us but remains omnipotent himself.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
"Well of course - he makes all the rules for us but remains omnipotent himself. "
Omnipotent? Didn't He die? Even if He was just a prophet/man He still became obedient unto death. How did he not be subject to the law of sin and death as are we?
gsixty 2 years ago
"How did he not be subject to the law of sin and death as are we"
Simple, because (apparently) Jesus only suffered hell for three days, then he ascended to heaven - hardly comparable to eternal damnation. Also as an omnipotent being by definition god can do anything effortlessly.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
"hardly comparable to eternal damnation"
AGREED.
It is simply an assumption.
gsixty 2 years ago
""hardly comparable to eternal damnation"
AGREED. "
Agreed? I didn't expect that, lol!! ;o)
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
"Christ took it upon himself to suffer hell in our place"
think about this in the context of what you wrote before about hell.
You are saying in order to appease himself god suffered absence of himself. Also god didn't suffer hell eternally as we aparently would so even if it did make sense how is that in any way equivalent?
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
Your first point deals with the Trinity paradox. Jesus said as he was on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" In other words, God the Father made himself absent to God the Son, which are separate but one. It is really only within the past few centuries and until very recently exclusive to western culture to reject paradox, to treat logic as truth instead of as a tool to learn truth. It's just the mindset of our culture that causes us to raise that question with such confusion.
madhouse2009 2 years ago
I find it had to put into words the contrast between the enormity and magnificence of the universe (surely god's best reflection if you believe in god) and a book, I truly find, tells of nothing but ancient men's ego.
God is omnipresent therefore it's impossible for hell to exist. If everything is entirely god's creation, for god to be absent, I'd have to be separate from absolutely everything, including myself ... which makes no sense what so ever.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
"Hell is simply the complete absence of God"
Psalm 139:8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
"Our souls are eternal"
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
How again is the soul eternal if God is able to destroy it?
gsixty 2 years ago
Both are misinterpretaions. The word "hell" in this case is derived from a root word that means "grave". Hell is separation, as is our physical death (separation from the world). The "destruction" of our souls is synonymous with the "dying" of our souls, which again is simply separation from God. "Death" in every usage (apart from the personification of inanimate objects such as batteries) implies separation from something.

"I don't need salvation"
Salvation by Webster; : deliverance from the power and effects of sin & preservation from destruction or failure.
Self fails, Love never fails.
The author of the satanic bible writes, "And this shall be the whole of the law, Do What thy will."
We live in a world that is directly affected by *the whole of the law* -self will-.
You don't need to be delivered from -self will-?
Who will save your soul?
Self can't help self. If you've achieved it write a book I'll buy it.
gsixty 2 years ago
"Salvation by Webster; : deliverance from the power and effects of sin ..."
Is that my 'sin' or other peoples?
"... & preservation from destruction or failure."
I don't want preservation from failure - I am what I am.
I don't want preservation from destruction either - eternal life to me sounds like a punishment, not a blessing.
"self can't help self"
What on earth do you mean? It sounds like you are saying you can't do anything to help yourself.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
"I don't want preservation from destruction either"
I'm sure your request will be granted.
"....you can't do anything to help yourself. " Where do you find a remedy to fix a problem, be it self help or how to fix a car for example?
Do you believe for every question there is an answer, whether we know the answer or not?
I believe "Self can't help self when self doesn't know the practical application of the answer." And guessing isn't a science either. Self NEEDS an external influence.
gsixty 2 years ago
I think I understand what you are getting at - that one need external influences ... I agree otherwise one might as well imagine you are living a perfect existence and never know any different.
BUT
I must also do something for myself - I can have all the information and best intentions but even if I know everything, I can't expect anything to happen without acting (helping) myself.
If it was as easy as just waving to Jesus and falling in line, life would be easy, pointless and dull.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
"life would be easy, pointless and dull"
On the contrary. That statement is lacking proof. Ex. If you never rode a rollercoaster then critiqued it you wouldn't have an audience that would buy your opinion.
Now I can see where you are coming from if you base your answer on what you see from so called christians but that's not good grounds on which to base an assumption as bold as, " life would be easy, pointless and dull. "
gsixty 2 years ago
Yea, that was a crappy comment that dosen't even make sense, sorry!
What it all boils down to is that we are here to tell Yahweh how great and good he is.
Jesus's dies on the cross - God's creation is influenced by another of his creations to eat one of his creations. His then separates his creation from himself and he can only appease himself by somehow sacrificing himself to himself. His faithful creations he'd save from his retribution to his "love" and his sceptical creations he'd burn.
MaxSafeheaD 2 years ago
"His then separates his creation from himself"
LOL The longer I live the more I C the effects of perception altering our opinions.
I completely understand UR point however we must take in2 account *perception*. Here in lies the *choice*.
God did not separate Himself from us, *sin* or in other words "self will that corrupts His creation" caused the separation.
gsixty 2 years ago
"self will that corrupts His creation" caused the separation.
Surely any self will that deviates from gods is some form of corruption, which then leads me to think the whole point of "free" will can only be to ensure man would eventually sin.
The other point that goes in tandom with that god could create whatever universe he wanted, so why would he create one in which he even made sin possible?
God has ensured his creation will have a will that deviates from his and also the means to sin.

shane is a cool guy
and his book The Irresistable Revolution
is simply amazing...but his humility is
even more amazing. i love this line he
uses "there is nothing special about me
that is not also special about you. never
forget that you are beautiful, just like
everyone else. and never forget that you
are a fool, just like everyone else."
what a guy!
deweyyyy 3 years ago
deweyyyy: if you believe your nothing then you degrade the living God who brought you for it is He who created you and paid a great price. Maybe Shane doesnt know but that line is what Communist preaches, go check it out.
livinfree123 3 years ago
But God loves me anyway, so I don't have to worry about that.
madhouse2009 2 years ago 2
Actually the Disciples & Jesus were practically the first "communists", the believed that the "common good is more important than the good of oneself" or something like that. In the scriptures (Acts) it says that the disciples lived in a house and shared EVERYTHING, and that's pretty much what communism is about, givin and recievin to/from other people what you/they need. Communism is not a dictatorship, what happened is that some "dictators" brought communism, but communism itself is an uthopy.

Does Shane smoke weed??
livinfree123 3 years ago
He actually speaks against it.
Sometimes it's hard to know how to really follow Christ. When what we see is straight Religion not a Religion of working ethics as James speaks of.
kroos87 3 years ago
I appreciate his passion for doing good works, just as I was in my 20's and did similar works. I just know that sometimes people can be lead away with emotion into error. I hope and pray this is not or will no happen to your generation. Remember it is the Truth in Love that we are called to live by and die for. Good works are a product of following Jesus who is the Truth and the fulfiller of the Law of God and the cleanser of our sins. That is True rebellion against the system 4 sure.

I read the comments here and I see so many who supoort these ideas. But yet are so easy to jump down someones throat, wasn't the point to love? Is love seen when you are trying to tell someone they are stupid, even if you aren't straight out saying 'you're dumb', you are still saying it in a round about way?
kroos87 3 years ago 2
I'm kinda confused here, how did you pull anything out of this message than "love"? I'm not sure what voice you're listening to, but it doesn't sound like anything that Shane talked about. It sounds like a distortion of what he said... If anyone is pulling anything out of this than to be lovers, or if their life isn't based around loving, then perhaps they're hearing something other than God's voice.
Danseur777 3 years ago
I believe you are confused indeed. I speak of love from the video that is obvious and not just from this video but scripturally as well. I was talking about the people who watch this video then attack others through video comments if they disagree or make a statement against it.
kroos87 3 years ago
This is the radical life I want to lead. The only thing that keeps us from doing it is fear, which shouldn't even be a part of our lives. You serve the people who are ranked lowest in society and in turn you help Jesus. :)
chris627 3 years ago 3
The only problem with that statement is that you're not being a radical when you do that. You're just being Christian. :)

radical, a radical is mearly taking it back to the roots. Simply living as Jesus lived, amazing how much that has been lost in translation. ahaha

Whoa! Give me some of that O Lord so that I may be a blessing and an inspiration for others as my brother Shane has been to me. And bless him O Father so that he may continue spread the message of your Son and his love for this lost and dying world. To God be the Glory for his is love!

DaUndataka 3 years ago

"When any institution, including the church, is in contradiction with God, we must obey God" - Phoebe Palmer (Co-founder of the Church of the Nazarene).
tool2scream05 3 years ago
It absolutely IS wrong to take over a Cathedral without prior permission. If people didn't see the areas under the bridges covered with trash and the shopping carts abandoned all over the place like I see from my home in Houston, they wouldn't be so hesitant to let the homeless take over their property. The problem with Shane is that he never mentions that the poor are at fault, EVER.
nathapatel 3 years ago

DMhessian17 3 years ago

nathapatel 3 years ago
I am not sure why everyone is more on the side of allowing the church to NOT take care of homeless people and leave a church building abandoned while people sleep on the streets than they are about slapping the church in the head and telling them to get their head on straight. Also, in the Old Testament, the oppressed are deemed righteous simply by their standing as the one being oppressed! Regardless of their position as sinners or not, they're deemed righteous on account of being oppressed.
tool2scream05 3 years ago 3
Ok, check it, it's my Gospel too and i have a right to say something about it. LittleJrt, you don't do any biblical exegesis on your passages and on top of that you quote scripture that is not there. Also, yes the bible does say something about carbon footprints when it says to take care of the poor (over 2k passages). Global climate changes affect the global poor the worst. It's a shame we've minimalized christianity to saving souls, it IS THAT and so much more. Shane doesnt exploit the poor.
tool2scream05 3 years ago
I agree that global climate is a problem, but I've yet to hear a reasonable solution.

shane claiborne does nothing more than preach "love" by HATING things he deems non-lovers by some double standard of his. he tries to say that his stances are all religious and not political, but that's total nonsense. where does the bible say ANYTHING about carbon footprints? Yet, he has no respect for those willing to die for him, such as U.S. soldiers. He is a hypocrite.
