The vehicle will run both off the battery power as well as the gas being given off by the fuel cell

It is not simply another battery operated car; but rather the battery also produces huge quantities of volatile gas

As you well know, battery operated cars were getting traction in the 90s, (hence your earlier ref to "who killed the electric car")

Hybrids were made because they are NOT competitive with gas guzzlers, (hybrids need 2 engines thus, useless)

The fuel cell I speak of goes well beyond simple battery operation; the fuel it produces in the form of a gas actually powers the car

Enzymes actually break the water down into its chemical constituents

Wrong. It takes energy to break apart water into hydrogen and oxygen. It takes MORE energy to do this than what you get from running it through a fuel cell.

Maybe you should try running a conventional car on car exhaust. You'll have as much luck as "splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen with an enzyme".

An enzyme is a molecular factory that makes things; in the case of this topic, there are enzymes that break water into its constituent moieties: Oxygen & hydrogen

It is the very fact it is done with very little energy that makes it a Super Fantastic fuel alternative!

Water contains less energy than the same amount of free hydrogen and oxygen, so it takes energy to break water apart. Period.

Even if one uses an enzyme such as hydrogenase to reduce the activation energy of the reaction of splitting water, it will _ALWAYS_ take as much OR MORE energy to split the water than you'll get in useful work out of a fuel cell or burning it, period.

You cannot get more energy out of it than you put into it, because you start with water, and end up with water.

Va Tech can do it: $8 drives their car 300 miles, (achieving 97% of the maximum stoichiometric yield)

Efficiency improves all the more when the H produced is used both as Battery electrolyte & a combustible fuel; & even more so when processed in a PEM fuel cell

The energy source for splitting the water is sunlight (through the algae), which was what I've been asking for quite some time.

Well, production of hydrogen is not the only problem to overcome...storage is a HUGE problem, as well as the cost and longevity of the fuel cells.

One thing which looks promising (as per VA Tech) is the use of a carrier such as starch, which would be stored on a vehicle, and used to produce hydrogen as its needed (instead of storing the hydrogen itself).

My point is that, like the flying car (there were several), even if it's technically possible, it might not be commercially feasible.
