It's difficult to say that Roy is the greatest goaltender in the modern (since '67) era. Brodeur is just as good. The one thing that sets Patrick apart from the others is that he could change the outcome of a game by simply being on the ice. His passion for the game of hockey can't be surpassed by ANY player.

Guys like LaPlante and Sawchuck can't really be compared to Roy. They are greats from a different era.

true enough MR ROY is the true butterfly. all goalies can learn from him even Marty. a well respected player who loves the game and was never afraid to play under pressure, he always looked at it as just a game and nothing more. thats what made him very confident.

Patrick Roy and Francois Allaire patented a style of play that might seem boring to people like you, but it's significantly more efficient. The mantra of the butterfly goalie is that if you had to make a spectacular save, you were out of position.

It gives me chills watching this. I was 10 years old in 1986 and knew I was seeing something special. My family were Sabres fans so I watched alone on a little black and white tv as Roy lead Montreal to the cup. I've been a huge fan ever since!

Though Roy was my favorite Goalie growing up (on Montreal) & even in retirement he still is. Records aside him being the greatest goalie in history's still debatable. There's still Vezina, Plante, Broda, Giacomin, Dryden, T. Esposito, Cheevers, etc etc. Although Plante's #1 in my book, Roy being #2.
