Everything interpreted by Wesley is not protestant. To truly be protestant it would need to address priesthood of the believe of which it does not.
So it just a song interpreted many different ways by different congregations.

indeed, the words are from isaac watts (1719). the text is a paraphrase of psalm 90, which is a nessesarity for the melody. this fact has nothing to do with protestand theology. that was my point.

I am sorry, but these words are from the 90th psalm. In those days, a protestant theology was absolutely unknown. A wonderful and gorgeous hymn by the way!
