if you are going on a broad reach with the asymmetric spinnaker (big front sail), you need to bear away in such a situation. If you turn upwind, you will capsize because of the big lateral pressure in the rig mostly caused by the spi. The spinnaker in this case generates less pressure if you are going straight down wind, because its covered by the main sail. Additionally the pressure i the rig is in direction of the course resulting in a decreased pitch moment.
Bastiaan - I believe the English Dart sailors bear-off in the gusts (when sailing upwind). I can't quite get my mind around the process that allows you to do that without going for a swim - perhaps it stalls the main and therefore depowers it. The current world champion has just joined our fleet down here in South Africa, I will have to quiz him on it.
@sailflyboy nah, when going upwind, if the boat starts to heal die to a gust, you have to stuff the nose into the wind (head up, not bear off) very gently as to not end up head to wind or tacking. bearing off is for when you are reacing and you start to heal :)
I am completely confused !! The boat starts to pitch-pole, and his response is to grab the wheel and crank her downwind !! He is on a fast close-reach, surely turning up into wind would have depowered quicker without danger of a pitch-pole ? He damn near threw it over !!
@sailflyboy You certainly have a point, however, he was in a huge gust, and I think rounding up would have made him tip over sideways. I think in a situation like that you should dump the main, but he didn't have enough time for that...Conclusion: it was close
@TheLoneJoker if you actually thought it was a really nice video you would've watched the whole thing, lol jk at the end at 1:13 it says it..."Intro" by "The XX"

should have taken the genoa off. he just panicked and tried to head up yet the rudder was out of the water and was no longer useful in any way.

Single-handing and almost pitchpoling your 100 foot trimaran in a non-stop round the world race? Priceless. A full "brown trousers" moment.
