@Mrparrot73 there were several quite severe famines in india in the late 1800's an the only reason tens of millions didnt die (the number is, thankfully, in the hundreds of thousands, not millions) is because of the high quality medical system, irrigation system, canal and railroad stystems which allowed aid from britain and the empire to flow quickly into india and allow indians to be treated for malnutrition.

That should be sufficient enough to conclude who benefited from the raj… Prior to raj, India was one of the richest countries in the world (22% of the world’s GDP) and post raj India was one of the poorest (3.3% of the world’s GDP). India wasnt just seen as a colony, it was seen as something better, but not yet a dominion. @Mrparrot73 there were several quite severe famines in india in the late 1800's an the only reason tens of millions didnt die (the number is, thankfully, in the hundreds of thousands, not millions) is because of the high quality medical system, irrigation system, canal and railroad stystems which allowed aid from britain and the empire to flow quickly into india and allow indians to be treated for malnutrition.

Poor and vulnerable to invasion, they needed resources from around the world to protect themselves. They should have behaved better, no doubt, but if the English did not develop an empire, some one else would have. And perhaps they would have been a lot worse...

I am an Indian and have lived in Great Britain...I observed that its a very tolerant society and I still maintain that it's the empire who introduced law, mordern education, sports et al to name a few that has transformed India to what she is today.
