those were bad days for the oilers,i remember that night. I was about 8yrs I was lookig fwd to seeing oliers in their blue and silver and low and behold they changed the uniforms to blue and white, things didnt improve until about 1976
The head coach of the Oilers that season was so dumb he told his players, "I want you to line up single file in a semi-circle on the helmets with your sidline under your arms"! :P
In memory of Dandy Don Meredith who quipped "they're number 1 in northern Texas" upon seeing this digit--his fellow commentators Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford were flabbergasted and didn't say anything when they saw the middle finger.
What a dark era...back to back 1-13 seasons in '72-'73. The term "Oiler Crisis" fits nicely...They are with the '76-'77 Bucs and '08-'09 Lions as the worst teams ever (All had 2 wins in 2 years)
If you think that was funny, you should have seen the scene from the late 60's Green Bay Packers locker room. The reporter was doing an interview with one of the Green Bay players, and in the background, another Green Bay player was facing back to the camera, dropping his drawers, full moon shot.
I want to apologize for that ignorant and completely irrelevant outburst. The truth is I'm a lonely guy without a worthwhile thing to say here, and I just can't keep my pie hole shut, so I was hoping someone would pay attention to me.
Actually the The Oilers appeared in the first three AFL championships. After winning the first-ever AFL championship over the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960, they repeated over the same team (then in San Diego) in 1961. They lost to the Dallas Texans in the classic 1962 double-overtime AFL championship game, at the time the longest professional football championship game ever played.
I remember that! Of course it was the only thing I remembered about that game. I was just talking to a poker dealor at the local casino and thought I'd look it up on you-tube. Thanks for posting that, it was a MNF Classic!!
im glad the broadcasters laughed about it. people had a better sense of humor back then. imagine if that happened today! the commentators would be apologizing up the ass. i fucking hate the FCC
The Oilers went 1-13 in 1972 & 1973. They improved to 7-7 in 1974 under Sid Gillman and 10-4 in 1975 when Bum Phillips took over as head coach when Gillman retired as coach.
That sums it up nicely.

early oilers in the late 60s and early 70s were not that good. when earl campbell got to houston they started getting better.
jamezpackerfan 2 years ago 2
@jamezpackerfan The Oilers actually had playoff appearances in 1967 and 1969 -- both times they were stomped by the Raiders, 40-7 and 56-7.
SuperBowlExpert 1 year ago
@SuperBowlExpert The Raiders back then were a powerhouse and had one of the best dangerous defenses in the NFL they were monsters
