Interestingly he doesn't fallow his own tabs in several areas (particularly the first verse is played the same as the second and the Am after the bridge is played the same as the first verse). It still sounds great, but I find it rather interesting. The tab is wrong on the G in the bridge (a few extra notes in there) but he plays it correctly.

Regardless it allowed me to learn it, so all is forgiven.

you should try to learn by ear it's better and faster plus you get better that way

You don't have to strictly play it the way he did, perhaps play just the chords and break it up, develop from there. Forcing "learning by ear" is probably the worst way to learn. It's very unenjoyable to play that way and it won't sound right.

By the way, you might find inspiration from another unappreciated guitarist who specializes in finger picking....Lindsey Buckingham. As far as I am concerned, he is the most amazing and unappreciated contemporary guitarist of our time. He plays the Guitar as if he were playing Flamenco or Banjo.
