I too put the 65 on a cloth and pinch the strings. And here's something I picked up form an older guitarst years ago. Before I play the guitar I lubricate the strings & fretboard with almond oil. It's cheap and you can find it in a pharmacy.
I have bought a new gibson (explorer bass ltd) which has a nitrocellulose finish. I have heard that nitrocellulose is very delicate and it gets ruined easily. Does the dunlop polish work well with that kind of finish as well
Nice one TK, not that I didn't know how to look after my guitars but is always fun to watch how someone else does it (although my wife thinks I am a bit odd for doing so).
Hey Tone King, nice video as always, I have a question if you don't mind, I have a Washburn N2, not glossy finish, natural wood I think. (My English is not native). What do you recommend?
You have to watch out with what you clean your guitar with. I had a beautiful black Ibanez, I used some cheap, coarse-as-all-hell paper towel. I put so many tiny surface scratches in the thing it almost looked like an old fashioned metal engraving.
The noise of the string cleaning was like nails on a chalk board! Uhh. Shiver me timbers! I bought this little plastic rectangle thing with a sponge on either side. You put your cleaner on each side and close it over the strings, then run it up and down a few times. Works pretty well, and it doesn't make that horrific sound. And I rub lemon oil onto the fret board so it stays nice and crack free.
I am with you buddy! I cant stand a filthy, dusty, finger print covered guitar. But I go one step further. I start by spraying a cotton cloth with Windex. THAT is the only way to truely clean a guitar. You really just rubbed the dirt and oil around and spread it out so it can't be seen. Clean it first with a real cleaner and then use the Dunlop 65 to polish and give it a protective coating. Then it is really clean and protected.
@gh05trider9 LOL. as for non glossy finishes - I use that on everything, and never had a problem. With that said - most cleaners have some sort of instructions - especially the fingerboard cleaners, so it's always best to check the instructions - but I never had a problem w/ the Dunlop 65. No problems here.
I dont bother doing this. I only ever do it when I change strings. And I guess Im lucky that I prefer finishes that dont show up finger prints too badly. I would never buy a piano black guitar.
I can ATTEST to the dunlop 65 guitar polish! We use it in the shop when we do a guitar repair, we clean the guitars with D65 and the ycome up like new!
Really does the Finish well.
We also have Andrea Polish which is cheaper and its almost as good. My boss gave me a bottle, it cleaned my guitars nicely!
SUPER helpful! thanks a ton! i've had that string cleaner forever and i could never figure out how to use it properly but your method works SO much better! thank you again!
Can you go over fretboard cleaners and stuff like eventually? I never cleaned my fret board before and all of the comments I read on products usually talk about rosewood and other woods.
hey tk....the Dunlap cleaning kits are awsum! ive been using them for decades! I am also big on lemon oiling my rosewood and ebony boards...I oil the fret boards every few months.
I have the Lemon Oil for my fretboard, I oil the rosewood fretboards about twice a year. I use the Gibson polish that works good just like any others out there. I have to get between the pickups too. To avail getting spray where you don't want it you can spray your cloth instead of directly to the guitar. We do the exact same thing TK. I can't stand a fingerprinted guitar, the oils from your hands will breakdown the strings. Great video.
Lucky winners! I tuned into the webcast for the first time. My first time using ustream even! Probably crashed the show trying to get in with my iPad! Nice guitar. Nice orange amp. Congrats to those two winners.
