i have a 7 yr old sheltie named Teddy and hes soo cute and he has beautiful markings on him. i like how hes matured and is quiet now but i miss the puppy years. but not a fetch kinda dog lol mine prefers soccer

I used to have a sheltie called Max. He was a bit thick at times but he was uber loyal and always wanted a fuss from anyone who walked through our front door :) it's a shame his age caught up with him, I miss having a dog :'(

Gotta Sheltie. Name is Casey. He is smaller than most shelties. People mistake him for a girl because his name. Casey LOVES to run and chase birds. He is the cutest theing. Casey is fancy and does not take baths in bath tubs, he goes to the groomers. Casey sometimes barks at mirrors. He is not a lap dog, he is a snugglebug.

@emzii92 Shelties are the sixth smartest breed of all dogs; they're very trainable and intelligent. That also means they find their own fun if you don't provide it, so you have to keep them busy. They are very vocal (it's how they herd sheep) but mine learned the "quiet!" command easily enough.

This is legitimately the most adorable video I've ever watched. I have a sheltie and she's now 4 (they grow so fast!!) and big and really pretty...but she doesn't do all the super adorable things she did as a puppy!

I *think* the only main difference, behavior wise, is that males might bark a little bit more (be prepared: shelties bark a lot in general).

My female sheltie was *VERY* timid the first few years of her life, too ... maybe males are a little less frightened of meeting new people.

But either way, whether you get a male or a female, they're great dogs.

I can't comment on shelties specifically, but among dogs in general, males are larger than the females. Also, males tend to be a bit more needy, whereas females are more independent. There's also the, ahem, hormonal behavior of dogs, though getting them fixed greatly diminishes this. Really, the most important part of the dog is not its sex, but its individual personality, and the sort of training you give it.
