  • what a perfect pairing. this voice was made to sing this song.

  • i remember what simon said. He said "this isnt as good as i thought it would be, i prefer your rock side"(or something like that) one word....Idiot

  • 24 people just don't know how freaking sexy David Cook's voice is.

  • This is the moment that revealed the amazingly pure and powerful sound DC could produce, the moment when many realized the true size of his talent. It was a revelation, unforgettable.

  • cutie, hottie, sexy voice...im a fan...

  • The week before when Ryan announced the music for this week, I was so scared DC would be in trouble. Boy, was I ever wrong! Little did I know that this would be one of his best songs on Idol!

  • I love this!

  • @Mandamae95 Me too! This was my favorite song that David sang on Idol.

  • youtube needs an "i fuckin looove this!!!" button. xD

  • Not bad, but the ending ruins it.

  • damn. 1:23 makes me want to belong to him lol

  • ohh man give this guy a mask! he could totally be the next phantom!

  • Hehehehehe. -fangirl-

  • Too poppy for my tastes, but not as bad as I've heard on shows like this.

  • 22 people are Phantom snobs.

  • WOW!!! *goosebumps* !!!

  • Wow one of his best performances!!!!!!!

  • Sublime

  • 22 people don't like to listen to music at night

  • seriously as soon as i heard this i knew he was gonna win

one of the BEST version i have ever heard and i am SOOO picky about people who sing this song (hardcore phan right here)

right below mc and gerard's versions

    phantastic!!! XD

  • 1:10 makes me tingle

  • loved it up until the end wat a way to ruin a good performance.

  • @aiden701 I know!!! I felt that it was to... idk. it just kinda ruined it. :( but he did a great job.

  • David knew this wasn't going to be his best performance musically, but he did it to show America that he could be gentle, too.

  • A rock singer had never won the show before, and you couldn't win unless you proved you could do something else, too. This was his moment.

  • Stop saying he was bad.....i love it!! its amazing :D

  • @PotO2004Phantom I don't here much pop in this song...at least none that's not already there...

  • @EmeraldEllis This song doesn't sound pop at all (originally). Have you ever listened to the song, and not just the movie version. Look up like Hugh Panaro, John Cudia, or one of the broadway/west end phantoms. It's dark, melodic; not poppy.

  • his range does not fit the song at all. Im sorry to those that think he is actually good. the low notes that determine the main part of the song He cant even hit. he becomes chesty and destroys his voice in doing so. If he wanted to really do well he should have transposed it to where he didnt have to go so low. Even gerald butler did better in the movie version of the song and gerald butler isnt a real singer.

  • @sasukeroxmymind gerald butler is not a singer but he is not at all bad. i think he did amazin in the movie

your right david cant hit low keys

  • David Archuleta was better and more original

  • He is a good singer, but I'm so sorry to say that he is not a good phantom.

This style of music, is completely not him.

  • i was sooo happy he stayed true to the song and sang it like its ment to be sang and i was sooo happy he won cuz he was my favortie!!

  • he killed the ending

  • This is exceeded my expectations in every way. I actually think this song really works as a pop tune. I'm very impressed.

  • CANNOT be compared to Gerard Butler or Michael Crawford!!! WHAT is this world coming to?! Singing Phantom in pop style?!

  • @explodingcranium2442 Gerard Butler sucks as the Phantom

  • @SebastianAntonioPage

Yes he does not have the beautiful, instrumental like voice that Michael Crawford posesses, and yes he is definently not up there with the greats, but he is CERTAINLY better than this guy.

  • @explodingcranium2442 i think they are about the same lol

  • I'm getting goosebumps from this version. i didn't get this from the other David D:

  • Sounds exactly like Gerard Butler's version!

  • BRAVO! Fantastic job! I tip my hat to you sir :) Of course Mr. Butler can never be outdone, but remarkable job. ^.^ I'm so glad he is singing it the way it's supposed to be sung (referring to David Archuleta's((sorry if i didn't spell hisname right)) remake of Think of Me)

  • Gerard Butler is wayyyyy better but i aplaud him for picking a great song

  • God..i think i fell in love...

What an amazing an beautiful job...

  • i think im crying...

  • See, this is EXACTLY why he won! (Even though this was top 6, XP)

  • I swear he could be the Phantom himself with this wonderful voice and proformance. <3

  • @jutor002, i'm really late on watching this...but you are so right. i think i died a little bit on that note. i just fell a little bit in love with him. this was beautiful. holy god. that really is why he won.

  • ohh my this is awesome <3

  • so my fam and I thought this week would bust him. We thought the rock star won't make it through A L Webber week. Then THIS happened. And I died.

  • absalutly magical

  • david cook singing 'music of the night'? no way! but i was wrong..... he sang the song in a way so different from the way the phantom would have sung it ( domineering and convincing ). he gave it a pleading, soft-sell twist which really sounded sexy to me.

  • Beautiful!

    he did a great job!

  • I think I creamed my panties <3 *applauds*

  • @wowisfunyo LOL tooo funny - coz its true :O)

  • Dang.. 1:10. And that's why he won :) Didn't screw with the original, he did it his version. Congratulations David :)

  • Man, that note at 1:10 was fantastic.

  • he was great singin that !

sounded just like Gerard Butler x

  • He sang this perfectly!

He sounded excatly like the REAL Phantom!

    Amazing job!

  • i know the song is sang softly but he was just a little too quiet for me. i think i would have liked if he sang it a bit stronger. he hit the note well at 1:10 though and after that he seemed to sing a little stronger so all and all good job. oooo until that ending. wow fail ending lol sorry david, it was good until there XD

  • i think he was better with these types of songs and not the rock songs

  • his ending spoiled it and he was still 1000000000000x times better than the other david

  • OMG this gove me chills of lust. he is amazing xoxoxoxo still shakeing

  • I love David Archuleta.

However: this week Archie gave me pleasant shivers.

Cook melted me into a steamy gooey puddle of lust.

  • pfff, hahaha. you're funny.

  • i think he sounds lyk the guy who sings that song he is soooooooooooooo goooooooooood

  • its not bad, i like that he didnt change it :)

  • That was one of my favourite performances on American Idol. It was amazing.

  • i love is maly voice :) so sexy, and he actually pulled off a phantom of the opera! i was completely stunned!

  • he can sing that to me anytime!!!

  • I don;t know what you all are talking about... He decided to make the song a bit more of his own at the end. He did a good job. It was awesome.

  • killed it! litterly though it's horrible i think that david .A. did better!♥

  • thank God he used the original version and not ruined it...

  • rofl, i read this comment before i heard the end and was thinking, hey, i guess it was decent..

then BAM. it was seriously like getting fucked in the ass.

  • @fitzgerald1337x Agreeddd

  • Nicely done =)

  • I loved this....Wtf was wrong with the last note? Yeah, nothing. D:

I wish I could hear this live, no joke.

    Buy me Phantom tickets, plz.

  • Pft!

  • I was in awe the whole way through the song. Until he killed the last note

  • I actually thought it was semi-decent

until i heard the last note

  • i agree....that last note

  • OMG HE WOULD MAKE A FUDGIN AMAZING PHANTOM!!

I LUV HIM AND DA PHANTOM their both super talented and Sexiii

  • "what is this"

aahh yes is the phamton from New Jersey

  • i love me some david cook, and some phantom :)

  • he sounds so much like the phantom. lol

  • I feel as if he takes this song in a direction too far from the original. The lyrics of this song kind of force the interpretation one way and he takes it somewhere completely different. Yes, he has a great voice, but his mood takes so much away from the song.

  • wow..he is beautiful and I like his particular kind of voice,it's perfect for this interpretation!^^ I appriciated it really!^^

  • I've known the phantom my ENTIRE life.... well... since i was 5. but thats still 11 years. But anyway, he is nothing like the original stage performance ,which ive seen 3 times so i know. This song is usually so beautiful im moved to tears. He has a very good interpritation of it, and nothing will ever compare to the original, but it was still good.

I never watched AI but i saw this and David Archuletas "Think of Me". I can see why David Cook won. >_>

  • I cant agree more. I just watched David Archuleta's and realized that throughout the whole time Andrew was never smiling i feel as if he butchered a wonderful song.

  • I thought he did great. Naturally, it was nowhere near the original, as the only time I've ever seen a remake better than the original was when lambert was on the show. I thought he did very well, though.

  • gerard butler was more into the acting and the emotion of it though, and he's not a natural singer, so thats not a very sound comparison. and i dont think the point of the song was not to make sound like the phantom, but rather to see if he could take a completely different style of music and make it work in his favor. this is a more pop music competition rather than a broadway audition.

  • This is terrible, I can't believe Webber would actually allow this. Yea it's pop, so leave good music out of it. They really just ruin it. Gerard is a million times better IDC if you agree or not. This is bad.

  • gerard butler has little natural vibrato, but he was fantastic as the phantom as far as acting is concerned. here, the competition focus is different, so you can't compare this to opera. it is supposed to be a challenge. get over it.

  • I know what you're saying, but this is a terrible attempt of a challenge. It really is. He's quite bad. The judges on American Idol are all washed up fucks anyways, they don't know anything about this. Especially opera. There's nothing to get over. Get over the fact that he killed the song, I know a bit about singing and music I've been playing various instruments and done vocals for quite some time

  • wow! Your so humble but are you making money as much as he is making since you said you know everything about

music? Pls. don't exalt yourself without any proof of

    your talent!

  • And he's making nowhere near the amount Butler makes. So I mean w.e and I dont need to sit here and prove anything to a 12 year old little girl. It's sad I'm even replying to you really. You people just need to accept an opinion and move on. You think he's good, when I think he's shit. That's great. Like what do you want me to record myself on camera for you? Is that what you'd like?

  • i agree Gerry is the best!

  • Not too bad, doesn't have enough emotion to my liking though... not as ood as Butler and nowhere near as good as, say, Burton.

  • Yeah, he definitley cannot compare to Gerard Butler. In the movie it sounds so wonderful. <3

  • He's just singing it. Nothing special. Yeah, you're right, there's no torment in it. It's just singing.

"Grasp it, sense it." I don't feel it.

  • Not as good as Gerard Butler, but still really good. Way better than the other guy who re-did "Think Of Me" into some stupid pre-teeny pop song. God, I though my ears were going to bleed when I heard that.

  • Do you mean David Archuleta from American Idol?

  • Oh, yeah. I just don't think someone should make that into a pop song.

  • It was actually fine with me. At least, they made another version of the song into a more modern type. I can't imagine David Archuleta singing like a Lyric Soprano on stage. Hha. But I understand your comment.

  • wow

    that was

    beautiful

  • good looking,good voice.

  • he sounds just like the phantoms voice i love that!!!!!

  • his voice can't be soft like Gerard

  • Hmmm, it's interesting seeing this song sung without half of of his face covered.

  • You are a fool to think that David's "Think of Me" was not brilliant. He did, in fact, change the original song-style to which the song was written for a FEMALE vocalist. He remastered it. If the song's original author thought well of it your feelings should be much more insignificantly regarded as expressed in your comment.

  • Not bad, his voice didn't seem right for the part, but definately better than david archuleta with his stupid pop version of think of me.

  • his voice is PERFECT for this song. wow what a good choice.

  • i luv this!!!<3 david cook

  • I actually like this version better than the one in the movie!!! Cook would have been an AMAZING Phantom!!

  • I do agree that his voice is pretty awesome....and I love him singing this song....but you can't hear the darkness and torment in his voice that needs to be there...

  • to beeeeeee!! damn that was the hardest and highest part... nice job

  • david has the best voice i have ever heard i love his music i loved it when he sung this =)

  • This is actually one of the best versions of this song! And I'm a HUGE Phantom fan. Gerard Butler is my other favorite. I don't get why pretty much everyone doesn't like David's version of this song, cause it's really one of the best ones out there.

  • he did okay

  • damn this is good

  • This was good for a single version of the song in the pop world, but it's nothing compared to the play in my opinion. Still amazing.

  • yeah but he actually chose to sing the play version, and he managed to pull it off pretty well despite being a rock-pop type! that's what i find amazing. darchuleta changed it to pop version, didn't he?

  • amazing.

    but i prefer gerard butler

  • yea but david is good

  • fantastic voice :)

  • just like the movie!

    it's amazing

    the best*

  • WOW! he's pretty good at it. :)

  • HAHAHA , yeah he's fantastic

but he doesn't sound like gerad butler!

     mygod no! please.. -.-

  • gooosebumps... this song made me want him to win!

  • wow...that was very good

he really sounds like gerard butler

  • omg i was totally thinking the same thing! he's really awesome though!

  • He sounds exactly like the phantom! I had to look up and make sure it was david cook and not the sexy phantom HAHA!

  • No. do you know what your talking about?

  • I'm entitled to have an opinion, so how about you shut up? Thank you

  • You're talking about David Cook sounding exactly like the Phantom, sorry, but he's no Micheal Crawford and they have completely different vocal ranges by the way.

  • Hey hey you guys calm down . We all know it was a good preformance. All your guys' opinions are stated and we all take them into account. Lets all just listen to the music of the night.

  • good job

  • I just simply love him....

  • Dude...the theme of the week was Andrew Lloyd Webber...there's no avoiding broadway music. He didn't have a choice.

And he didn't screw them up BIG time...he gets limited time, and they only take certain verses. =P

  • oh wow he did an awesome job with this

    fantastic..

  • i remember wen he sang this :] lol i loved it!

  • AMAZING.

I love how he kept it mostly the same and yet at the same time, he made it his own!

    He has an amazing voice.

    ;D He'd make a fantastic phantom...

  • that was fricken AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! omg

  • Now thinking about it... He wouldn't make a bad phantom.

  • He Really Sang Like The PHANTOM =D

  • He was so sweet when he was singing this to me...

  • wowowowowow!

    he was very good

    clap clap

    :) loved it

  • I liked the simplicity he sang the song w/. he didn't change anything until the ending, so he did a very nice job. Granted he's not on Broadway, he did a good job blending both a traditional and pop sound together.

  • i think david did a great job. i mean, just think, for that song you have to go low, then high, then low, and then really high again. i think he did a great job with his singing ability, even though others could have done it better, just because they have different voices.

  • He rocked this song! Alot of passion he put into it!

  • i love this song. He did a beautiful job. His voice sounds so diffenrent then usual. :)

  • he just didnt put enough feeling into

thats what makes gerard butler's version so good

you really feel how he feels...

that one high note though (let your soul take you where you long to BE) was really nice

  • David did a good job on the song, but Gerard Butler is much better!

  • Ughhh that note. I died. So great.

  • I'm not a pop singer fan but I ldo love seeing what other people say about these singers. Can I just throw in that that I am mystified by any praise of Michael Crawford; a yelping, straining, adolescent, adenoidal tap-dancer-of-a-singer whose voice sounds nothing like the description in the original novel. To borrow a quote, A.L. Webber is the greatest composer who ever lived who wasn't a genious. And now I presss the Post Comment buton and forever commit this brash honesty to Youtube.

  • I became a fan of his after this performance.... :D though to be honest that was partly due to my eternal love for this song. But when you've heard Michael Crawford's version, it's impossible to accept anyone else's.

P.S.: If you don't mind a baritone singing the song, give a listen to Michael Maguire's version too - this is not only because I have an unhealthy love for that man :P... he does a pretty good job, and his voice is amazingggg.

  • he's good but i like gerard waay better. And it's floating, falling not falling , floating! Butler makes it sound sexier

  • Yes, I agree. He screwed over the lyrics and just didn't have the vocal appeal that Butler had.

  • He sounds nothing like Gerard Butler. Butler is a thousand times better than Cook!

  • .. If you listen very closely he sounds like Gerard butler Singing.. and your right he would do good on broadway :D he sounds amazing

  • Ohmahgahh~ he's sooo good~

  • i would come to the music of the night with david cook any day!

  • Ahhhh! I love David Cook and I love love looovee Phantom of the Opera, and he did it sooo goood!

  • Omg...he has such control..awesome

  • i like david singing this song,great

  • he sounds cool

  • If the rock thing don't work out, he'll be awesome on Broadway!

  • I love this version and I like DC. What I don't like is the cheering DURING the performance. He hits the note well and as a listener I enjoy it. I don't cheer while he's doing it coz I will miss it. It's called MUSIC APPRECIATION.

We in the UK are doing it now. It's MUSIC not FOOTBALL you goons!!

  • This is a very good rendition, make no mistake. But just from my personal preferences, I wish he would have "savored" the notes a little more. Still very good and he completely deserved to win :)
