The actual story/concept behind her from the official guidebook is this :

"It's really a delicious cheese cake. My dying mother wanted to eat it, but maybe I should have cured her disease instead. However, that surely wasn't possible."

She wished for a cake to eat with her mother before she died instead of curing her because she felt that curing her wasn't possible. Kyubey clearly didn't say anything until AFTER her mother died so she probably went into grief and became a witch quickly.

@TuxedoComplex It's on the Puella wikia. Elly wanted to "box up a memory", Elsa Maria wished for a stranger to be happy (I guess that's why she's praying as a witch) and Roberta wished for friends. Walpurgis and some of the other witches just have a description of their mindset at the time that they became witches, Walpurgis' thoughts are my favorite.

@Melissa5323 Well, everything about Charlotte is just speculation. Her witch name is Charlotte, which is also a dessert. There was a bunch of sweets and pills in her barrier realm. Her soul gem was also found right outside of a hospital.

It's her familiar. I don't remember what witch she is though.

Charlotte is the witch's name, so most likely not the girl's real name. (Ie, Sakaya's witch was named Octavia). From what the guidebook says, Charlotte's mother was dying and her wish had something to do with getting cheesecake for her(?)

@Melissa5323 if i remember right due to their witch forms... 1:02 is H.N. elly (she was suposed to have black hair tough), the green haired with roses is Gertrude, the white haired is Elsa Marie(she was suposed to have blue hair and white dress tough), the one with Harlequin hat is Walpurgisnatch... and like all witches, maybe she exausted her magical powers and never purified her soul gem, it became a grief seed and her a witch, i guess all girls keep their names, except for the witch queen

@PennilessWriterB theres no official back story for her but when you observe her world its assumed that she was once a Cancer patient and because of that she wasnt allowed to eat certain things. Its assumed that she wished she could eat anything again. shortly afterwards she realized that she could have instead wished for cancer not to exist and she immediately turned into a witch when she realized that she had wasted her wish on selfishness. Well thats one possibility. There are others.

To all those who think that WPN is the green haired girl from ep 12, I don't think so. Walpurgisnacht is actually a german festival, he clothes weren't typical or any German festival that I know of, and I'm German .-.

I believe that WPN is the shades and memories of past magical girls that have existed before and collected into the most powerful witch ever.

Though as an argument to my own argument, if WPN had no barrier, how had she not been seen before then?

Plus! Oriko keeps dreaming about her in the Mahou Shoujo Oriko magicka, which has caused a lot of people to believe she is Walpurgis.

not to break it off to you guys, most likely, charlotte isn't directly born from a mahou shoujo. when mahou shoujo despairs, usually they turn into witches right away, but charlotte laid dormant as a seed for a long time. It may be that it's a fragment of a once-mahou shoujo, or perhaps somebody carelessly lost their seed :P

Pretty sure a mahou shoujo's sould gem becomes a greif seed, which may or may not lie dormant at some point. Either way, the seed becomes lodged somewhere and a barrier is formed around it, the witch resides within. All witches are born from mahou shojou or the familiar of a witch at any rate.
