This IS our National Anthem. Where the hell did 'Advance Australia Fair' come from?
We remain happy, but practical & rational, cynics who pride ourselves on our right to question the establishment & uphold our right to question the tyrants. Banjo P wrote this as a protest song. The lyrics reflect Australian vernacular elicited from Aboriginal, Celtic, German & the whole world's immigrants who believed in true individual rights.
The Irish have 'The Soldiers Song'The Aussies have 'Waltzing Matilda'and the Brits have.....a fkn dirge. No tunes,no pride.Every time the Brit National Anthem is played the suicide rate goes up by 34% LOL.
@MrBillyhunchback No tunes ? No pride ?.. you really have no idea.. just a spud thick who,ll start to argue with a paper bag. No wonder there will never be peace in the Island of Ireland. YOU are your own worst enemy. Lmao... I bet you never even been to Ireland.
Swagman: itinerant bushman, carried a "swag" with all his belongings. Billabong: a river backwater. Coolibah: species of gum, found near water. Billy: Can for boiling water. "Waltzing Matilda": carrying a swag. Jumbuk: sheep. Tucker: food. Squatter: tenant of a large area of land, usually a grazier, as opposed to a "cockie farmer", who is nearer to a homesteader. Squatters often grew wealthy in the nineteenth century.
@dooley579 i think many of us like the music by banjo paterson, but i doubt many of us would be familiar with his name. many of us are familiar with "waltzing matilda", but i doubt many of us could say who wrote it. i first encountered the song around 1981, when i saw the movie "on the beach". i don't recall hearing it in school, but i re-call hearing an australian-sounding song in school,& it's the one which says, "kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry, merry king of the bush is he--"
@coventrygardens probably even fewer Americans are aware of Banjo Paterson's epic poem "The Man from Snowy River" - but most of us know the movie version. Go figure ....
@coventrygardens Surely every Aussie knows our greatest poet and a t least one or two of his ditties. Even I as an immigrant have some Knowledge of Banjo. It probably is time for schools to create an interest and appreciation of great Aussie poetry.
@MrZwilling44 sorry, but it looks like i confused you. my comments were about the knowledge of australian songs here in the u.s.a. my comment was a reply to someone from the u.s.a., which is where i'm from. i meant that people here in the u.s.a. are likely to be familiar with "waltzing matilda" without knowing the name "banjo paterson".
@coventrygardens That's ok, I probably got it wrong. However my all time favourite Aussie song is "I am, you are" by the Seekers and a lot of people here think that we should make it our national anthem and I fully agree as it describes the Aussie spirit best.
@MrZwilling44 i wouldn't say that you got it wrong. my comment that you saw didn't mention the u.s., but it was a reply to someone who mentioned the u.s., and you likely didn't realize that he and i were talking about the use of "waltzing matilda" here in the u.s. anyway, i think it's a great song, but i think it's a bit too comical to use as a national anthem. a national anthem needs to have serious subject matter. i was under the impression that au- uses "advance austra- fair" as its anthem.
@coventrygardens Hi again, don't you just love the internet and YouTube? Here we are discussing an Australian folks song and neither of us is born in Australia. I've also thought that Walzing Mathilda is inappropriate as an anthem. I migrated to what is now MY country 45 years ago from Germany. I have just finished my review of Christmas songs by BoneyM and find that they are still my favourites. Merry Christmas.
PS: I'm also playing poker with with people from all over the US.
@MrZwilling44 yea, it's great being able to communicate with people all over the world. i first encountered "waltzing matilda" when i was about 14 years old around 1981 when i saw the movie "on the beach". i'm not into poker, but i sometimes play a computerized version of "hearts". it sounds like you don't like germany any more. you mentioned "Christmas". i now celebrate Christmas, but i had previously been in a religious group that didn't have Christmas. i switched religions. Merry Christmas
@coventrygardens sorry if I gave you the impression that I don't like Germany any more. I love the old country and would love to visit for a year or so to renew acquaintanceships again in person. I am in contact via email, Skype and other dedicated sites. Can't have a beer on the net with someone thou, nor can I afford to go there. I do miss the snow at Christmas, especially Midnight mass which is the only time I go to church. Once again enjoy the festive season
@MrZwilling44 i just thought of something you might find interesting. i was raised in a part of the u.s. called "michigan". one of the most famous songs dealing with michigan is "michigan, my michigan". the song deals with michigan's activities in the american civil war. it is set to the tune of "o tannenbaum", often used for "o Christmas tree". it's in my favorites on my youtube channel. you should be able to get it at /watch?v=HQjJ1tEvrsw&feature=channel_video_title
To the Japanese person, i'm white and American, my ancesters came over here. I can go anywhere I want and so can you. When Americans want to move on they dont think about going back to England or the Continent (except maybe the rich) they think about going west to Australia like you.I just spent the whole summer trying to be not so white and now I have some color a tan, your not alone in not being happy about your color.Groweing up is being happy with what you got.I JUST WISH I had a TOYOTA!
ive noticed you aussies rock out to this song. being an american can you relate a song that we rock out to? but in all honesty this song is kinda hard core... pairs perfectly with a wallabee game.. haah
@MySknab That is just sad!. You should be proud of your accomplishments and not worry about thing that aren't in your control, like accident of birth. You could have been born in Somalia and be starving-parentless child there!!!
For one of the few times in my youtube postings, I gave this one a thumbs down. i just listened to Tina Arena's version (which is one of my favorites), and this one is very "choppy." Ruins the flow of this great song.
Except for my own, (American) this is possibly the best "national anthem" I can think of! God bless Australia...(but please don't expect me to be able to sing along...as much as I'd like to...we're two nations divided by a common language lol)
This song is about a swaggy (bushman) who steals a jumpback (Sheep) and then runs off , he camps near a boolabong (watering hole) is seen by the troopers (police) he then jumps into the boolabong and kills himself whilst stating you wont catch me alive.
Class Act ... One of the best songs ever written ... It amazes me how well it holds up no matter who sings it or how they intrepret it ... It's a song that can't be screwed up ... And when it is done well it is so moving ... God Preserve Australia.
When I was in Vietnam, I remember the Australians sang it all the time. We often joined in. They were great guys. I spent my R & R there, the best week of my time in the army. I love Australians. They're great people, and this song captures their spirit.
@Gazzara5 Spent my R&R in Camberra Aussie Land. in 1971 out of Monkey Mt. didn't see the light of day for the first 22 hours... might have been the best COLD!!!Beers I drank the following six days...in my life.
@Gazzara5 Yep! ... my story is very similar ... For me Australia represents Peace and Sanity during one of the hardest times of my life ... Thank you Aussies for the time I got to spend with you.
Too freakin cool...One of the catchiest songs I have ever heard. I remember it from the movie "On the Beach" with Gregory Peck..Once you've heard it, it will stay in your head for days...Youll hum it, youll whistle it, and youll try to sing it, but as an American, I can't get the lyrics down..smile.
Happy Australia Day!
