I loved hearing Antonia as well during the Orchestrion Chicago concert... if anyone has a good recording of it live from one of these concerts, please post?
Pat Metheny will be live at the Fox Theatre in Tucson, Arizona Sunday April 18th 7pm! I can't wait the video is great but live will be amazing! there are still tickets!
@eysikal - Can't tell you the order of play for the orchestrion tunes, only got the CD after the show, lazy as I am. The accordion parts in "Antonia" were emulated by the marimba and the piano if I'm not mistaken.
@Danielgoksu - shame on you for even contemplating recording it. Good on you to refrain from doing so! Saw people taking photos with their mobile cameras. What on earth did they hope they'd see on those pictures? Bet a few were recording as well, will probably appear here...
@bergsund51: I regret I didnt record any of it, even tho I have respect for the artist and all, but somethings in life is just worth getting busted for hehe wish I had taken the chance :(
@eysikal - A few bits and pieces from other well known songs as well, their names escape me and I'd have to trawl through the entire production to pick them out, but one of the songs he finished off with was "Stranger in Town" from the We live here album.
@eysikal - This is tricky, cos' there were quite a few references to well known tracks interwoven into the other songs. Especially in the solo parts. He also played the songs from the Ochestrion record in a rearranged order compared to the album (it was the original intended order according to him). What I really loved though was hearing him play "Antonia" from Secret Story in full length. It's the first time I hear him play anything from this album (as I missed out on the tour 1993...).
@bergsund51 "Antonia", huh. That's awesome; it's one of my favorites! Did he emulate the accordion parts somehow? I've read somewhere that he played "Sueno con Mexico" as well. Can you remember the order that he played the Orchestrion tracks?
Awesome like always, this project is probably one of his best work ever.
he's into music that's all ....this is the way he likes to do it,some people don't understand ,why sometimes it is far from jazz ,or the roots of jazz ,but who cares this is music ,and you like it or not.......this guy is a music lover and a poet .......
what has this do with the correlation of aspects of radiation and ears? what is the correlation of aspects of radiation and ears? if you shoot an irradiated ear with an arrow, what happens?
wow, i really liked the potential of when he played with jaco and bob moses but now he has truly become the modern day paul mc cartney of jazz - and yes, that is not a compliment. i mean, this is more pretentious than zero tolerance for silence. just get real players. what is the point? nancarrow and antheil were writing for the instrument. what is this?
Yes, the whole project sounds very "Metheny," but what do you expect? We all have human limitations, and Pat is again trying to expand his voice, but I'm not surprised that it has such a signature sound. I'm sure in five years he will be trying something different that will still sound distinctly like...Pat.
i hear what you are saying but how is he trying to "expand his voice"? i have wondered what has been going on since secret story. don't get me wrong, he works hard - but so did adolf hitler.
it seems like he has contracted keith jarrett disease - terminal arrogance. let's hope he doesn't start doing that silly moaning.
no, that is what you are saying. i am saying that the results of hard working people can result in disasters. to all of you, just get real players. listening to the drums alone, just get bill stewart, the results will be much better. he may have clearly stated he's trying to bring the acoustomechanical concept of the orchestrion to the ways *he* thinks about music but he is asserting value. and saying this WITH A SYNCLAVIER IN THE BACKGROUND. ah, boys with toys.
With all due respect, you introduced Adolf Hitler here in your post. So, according to you, if results of hard working people can result in disasters, should be people just do the easy thing? And not work hard? Just grab some musicians and play standards? I love jazz, but that formula has been overdone. It's the death of innovation. I congratulate Pat on trying something new, and being willing to take the criticism.
you sound very confused in your pursuit of being right. forgetting the instrument, musically how is this new jazz? sounds intensely written like "the way up" that has very little to do with jazz. nils petter molvaer and nick bartsch don't play standards. perhaps jou should stop being myopic like a beatles fan and listen to them. i will correct myself and add one phrase to what i have said "SOMETIMES the results of hard working people can result in disasters". now, calm down
when larry bill and pat play standards is that overdoing the formula? are they killing innovation? sounds like you have no clue as to what the music form is at all.
iantoau; jazz policeman. You'd probably have been there in the 60s telling us all that modal jazz isn't real jazz either, or that Ornette wasn't a real jazzer.
The concept of what current jazz 'is' continues to alter in the same way it has since its inception. It could be argued that jazz is largely defined by its paradigm shifts.
If nothing else, this an interesting and curious departure from the norm. Treat it as a curiosity if your brain can't get past your prejudice.
read ALL of the posts before you comment. also, look up novel and sincere in the dictionary. it may help you with your current bout of schizophrenia. modal jazz? you have been reading too many liner notes. describe the paradigm shift occurring here - or continue spectating. musically, how is this a departure from the norm? chords/rhythm/melody? any insight? or is your opinion the sound of your own voice?
"Shift" from what? It's just a modern approach to a 100-year-old concept.
See the vid of Metheny explaining his motivation for the project. It's the power of MIDI, but with actual mechanical instruments generating the sounds. No sampling, no digital sounds, yet one musician can "play" it all from one instrument. Infinitely more organic than MIDI or guitar synth. I'm listening to the preview and I think it's stunningly beautiful music. Why question a process that delivers such beauty?
Having just bought the album, it sounds wonderful, but in a chordal/rhythmic/melodic sense it's not so different to his other work. It's rhythmically very strong, in some ways it's reminiscent of Quartet.
His use of mallet instruments and repeated phrasing sound more minimalism-influenced than his normal work. It is different, but if you didn't enjoy The Way Up, Speaking of Now etc then you probably won't enjoy this either. Pretty much everyone else who has commented on here will though.
Have you ever heard a musician playing live over an enitire room full of instruments triggered from his principle instrument before? This is quite obviously a departure from the norm.
This piece may or may not be part of a paradigm shift, but that's not what I meant. I was referring to jazz being such an evolving discipline that it could almost be defined by its changing nature, so claiming that The Way Up isn't jazz is closed minded.
having heard the studio version and countless bootlegs of the way up and having watched the dvd - it is written. an amazing exercise in memory but memory nonetheless.
Yes, a huge amount is written, but there are lots of improvised sections. The first that springs to mind is Antonio's extended drum solo on the DVD, but there are many sections of Pat and Lyle improvising, and a couple of Cuong and Gregoire too.
@iantoau I wouldn't call it a paradigm shift, only because few if any other musicians will have the $ or the patience to tackle something like this. But it is pretty amazing, and I'm definitely gonna go check it out. As far as him hiring live musicians instead of doing it this way, well, that would negate the whole meaning of "orchestrion" - which is one source doing everything. I'd rather hear this than samples of sounds being triggered thru a synth.
@smurfberrycrunch Well, that's the entire point of this project! It's a solo Metheny gig, 100% Metheny comps, and I think it's going to be a magical experince. Watching all these instruments working, playing, watching Pat do this thing with the Ibanez and other stuff he's playing, and then following the tune is gonna be enough for me to take in!
I'm wondering what the point is myself; I'm tekked out as it is.
The composition seems a classic Metheny mail-in and the title is, once again, embarrassingly ponderous.
I thought that he turned a corner with The Way Up but maybe he just ended up smashing his head against the ceiling.
I say this as a committed Metheny fan and proponent. However, his public pronouncements - many of them gratuitous and mean-spirited - have opened him up to criticism.
@smurfberrycrunch If you listened to his motivation for doing this, you would see that the whole point of it is to play it live in front of an audience. I can't think of very many musicians who could even pull this off.
Pat Metheny is seriously the soundtrack to a persons life. I asked him about how he comes up with what he does. Do you know what he told me? He said, "It's all about how A goes to B. It's like really complicated Mathmatic's, which, is beautiful in itself." I was like, "WOW!" Pat is a walking and talking musical God!
Oh, Can't wait to see this live! I got 2 tickets, (presale choices) and managed to snag the Orch-RC-RowHH Seats 118 and 120. Finally got some really great seats to check out all that will be happening on that stage. This will be the Boston Orpheum Venue, May 20th, 7:30pm Cant wait to hear this!
@eysikal Of course I'm joking! But I do love Miley Cyrus! She's an A Game artist, just like Pat. Whole different thing going on. but non the less, on track to make a lot of people happy I belive. Now Pat? He has been my man every single day since that one summer day in New Hampshire when I was at my guitar teachers house for a lesson. And the end of the lesson, he asked me if I wanted to hear some really amazing playing by this guy Pat Metheny. "Sure" I said, Song X, and the rest is history!
