thanks for the post. I am interested in a long tail bike, with hiking a larger kid on the back. I'm surprised Kona don't factory fit bars/foot pegs for the back. The newly released Gary Fisher does, but is more expensive.
The footrest solution was the greatest challenge in the set-up. We settled on freestyle pegs for bmx bikes. We passed a bolt through them and a few washers and spacers and used the middle holes for the bottom of the panniers. Not ideal but seems to work. I also repurposed two old wood paddles (sort of like beach ping pong) by drilling a hole in them and passing the bolt through them between the frame and washers to keep her feet out of the spokes.
