One interesting thing. With each new generation of guitarrists, I think Segovia´s recordings will have less and less effect as they did on my generation (it was like hearing the only prophet in the desert). With so many great players nowadays and such a different style of playing, younger ones may idolize Russell, Barrueco, Denis Azabazic and many others. I think Bream and Williams will continue, however, to be important reference points because their modern players.
Segovia will always be the greatest guitarist of this world.
Nobody else (before, during ,or after his lifetime) understood the classical guitar to the degree he did.
Don't bring Barrios,Williams and other likable but far less musically intelligent characters in here as they are somewhat third rate compared to Segovia.
I suggest before you speak of him, listen and learn some classical music.
Segovia was an arrogant man. There was no sense of humility in the man. Only when you're humble you can become the greatest. Nevertheless, he was a great Artist.
Agree with you, and am glad that you feel the same. Segovia thought he was God. But he was an arrogant bastard, so full of himself...nevertheless a great artist...and he was reduced to dust. Watch his masterclasses.. Why are these great artists such pieces of shit in their life?
I'm glad I'm not alone brother. Arrogance comes from insecurity. Pride is nothing but an illusion. Not all great artists are arrogant like him, we've had some humble ones as well. Such as Agustin Barrios.
As much as I love his playing, I always separate the man from what he does. As a romantic artist, Segovia created a myth of himself (read his autobiography - it´s hilarious). In his masterclasses (see them on Youtube), he´s an awful teacher: forces himself on the student. That´s because in his time, Segovia had to be the one and only god. The rest were "his students". Reason why he never cared much for N. Yepes. I only regret calling him a "bastard". He was just plain old arrogant.
His scorning of Barrios was one of his greatest mistakes. He could have promoted Barrios´ music way before it became so popular. He could have put in a good word. But he tried to just dismiss it. Barrios was no threat to him...or maybe Segovia thought he was. Simplicity, humility, absence of pride but total focus on one´s art are the marks of great men and great artists. Segovia apparently loved being worshipped as the "Maestro".

classical guitarists do regard him the greatest nevertheless....you are confusing arrogance with knowing that you know something :P
Just like a Phd in physics will be sure of himself

No, they offered me an exchange to see Isaac Stern who came to town shortly after that. I now wish I kept the Segovia ticket.
