MammaNole -- You didn't offend me. If you were an Iraqi citizen in the 90's and said this about your government -- you would be executed. I am all for your right of free speech. In fact, I think we can agree on the question "What are we doing in Afghanistan?"
For you to say Merry Christmas also indicates a hint of conservatism because it is the liberals who are driving the word Christ out of Christmas!
Yes: What are we doing in Afghanistan? Great question! Hup hup...
As for Christmas, I don't want to get into religion. I support all people's rights to celebration of their deity, and Christmas is a huge part of my culture. Family gets together, come close, love, and seem more peaceful, practicing the love which Jesus spoke of, Turn the other cheek, love your neighbour as thyself, etc. This makes me very happy! :)
As for my conservatism, hardly. I'm on the left... not the right. I didn't agree w/Bush, the Iraq or the Afghanistan wars, and don't agree with torture of war prisoners, either, or Guantanamo. I don't agree w/ anything Bush and his gov't did, nor do I believe in what Obama has done with the surge.
But, I believe each person has a right to choose their politics, I just would hope each person makes an educated, informed decision.
Surely, in regards to Iraq, you must admit that as a peace loving person which you indicate to be -- you are surely happy that Saddam Hussein along with his torture chambers are gone forever. George W. Bush freed 50 million people...Why do liberals forget that? Now, what did we get out of it? Not much. I wish it was for oil - but look at the gas prices. At the very least, they could share their supply of oil in exchange for our blood...
Read the book call Responses to Occupation which can be found on Perceval Press for sale at a reasonable price. After you've read through that, then tell me if you really are sure what you know about how Iraqis feel about that war. Have you read any of their blogs, their poems, books, stories, news? Do you REALLY think you can speak for Iraqis? Typical imperial mindset if you ask me.
I was in Iraq from 2005-2007 on two different tours. I met hundreds of villagers on the outskirts of Iraq and they were very warm towards us. I played soccer every Tuesday with the local kids and it was an experience I will never forget. Typical liberal media victim if you ask me.
Thanks for your service to your country. I am Canadian, if you weren't sure, or didn't know.
I'm glad you were met with warmth. From what I've read there are a lot of Iraqis and Afghans that dislike and even hate Western Armies, and see the wars as imperialist and Christian threats. Just saying.
And, yes, sure, if that's what you like to call me, then I am a Liberal Media Victim extraordinaire, no doubt! *BIG GRIN* No arguments here, Mr. Blu. :)
@MammaNole Merry Christmas to you too Mamma. Please believe me what I tell you when I tell you my stories. I am the grandson of a living Holocaust survivor -- and if you combine that plus the two tours in Iraq -- I know what war is. I know there is an enemy out there who doesn't ask what political party you belong to before they slit your throat. I will never forget September 11th 2001. If you know what I know -- you would be singing a different tune.
I know you wouldn't make me go to war. Right? I've talked to soldiers before, men who suffer PTSD from what they've done & seen. I've read alot about The Holocaust & survivors, about the trauma... I don't take that from U or disregard Ur experience. U should write some poems, essay, or stories about what you experienced, share. I would be interested to hear your story. Of course, not here on this comment thread, but to get to know your story would be enlightening. Tx, Blu. My name is Nichole. :)
@MammaNole My name is Jim. My grandfather has many more stories than I do. He survived the death marches, Auschwitz, communism, and now -- socialism. You have to realize that my heart along with America's heart is at a very good place. I want peace in this world just as much as you do -- and there is an enemy of peace that exists -- and in my opinion, must be destroyed.
ah... the 'enemy'. This is relative. We are, then, enemies to others, as well. I'd like to find a way to get around that without having to destroy anyone. I'll keep dreaming this peaceful dream, if that's okay with you. :)
Jim, hi! :) I'd love to hear some of your Grandfather's stories, and yours. If you'd like to write, feel free to Private Message me. :)
Jim... and anyone else reading... now you can see from the poem what I mean about feeling compassion, empathy. :) This, truly, is peace. Thanks Jim. :) It's been a great rally back and forth!
@MammaNole I don't think you realize what a Nazi regime or Saddam Hussein regime would do to you if they found out you were trashing their government. Did you know that the Nazis used to make soap and lampshades out of the Jew's skin?
Yes... I did know that. And I do know that many leaders of dictatorships would string me up by my t!ts just for being myself. But that doesn't mean I'm going to first choose to send my army and get them, k? I'm for non-violence.
@MammaNole With all due respect, and I do respect you -- you really are the victim of the government media complex which has brainwashed many Americans as well. Many liberals hate Former President Bush more than al Qaeda and that is a big reason why this war isn't over. With all due respect to GWB -- he fought this war like a Democrat. Like I said before -- a couple B52s from Missouri -- and this war would be over.
Well, tx for bringing the convo back round to where it started! lol
Listen, we can agree to disagree on our sources of media, on the effect they have on us and our political and foreign outlook and policy, and we can agree to disagree on Bush, always.
What really matters is that we are two people with a history, stories to tell, and are active in our communities (in different ways). I respect you also, highly, for being a human being. That's what matters.
Oh, and also, when you fight for your country, go to war, you also fight for Liberal Media Victims... right? I know you can't hate me! :) I don't hate you, even if I totally disagree with your politics and foreign policy.
I used to play soccer, too! Left wing. But I was in a girl's and women's league. I didn't play with Iraqis. But, I still recommend that book. ;)
In a post September 11 world -- you must take threats seriously before they fully materialize. That means acting before they act on you. I don't want to get into the whole WMD scenario -- because everyone said they had them -- and he USED them on the Kurds following the Gulf War...25 million Iraqis are now living in freedom -- and it's getting better there...Afghan is another story onto itself...
@MammaNole Could you imagine the response from the country if, after 9.11.01, we did not go into Iraq -- and we woke up one morning to a dirty bomb attack in Los Angeles by Saddam Hussein? Was that really a risk you were willing to take?
and the sky could fall tomorrow, 2012 and everything, right... listen, I don't agree with war at all. I believe in self defense. Not in pre-emptive attack. Period.
@MammaNole -- I too support all people's rights in regards to religion. I believe in the love that Jesus spoke of as well -- however, al Qaeda was not around when Jesus spoke. If Jesus were to see the way al Qaeda beheads Americans with rusty knives -- I do not think he would turn the other cheek.
Re; Afghanistan. I don't support the way the war is conducted. Either go full steam -- or pull out. Obama went 1/2 way -- and that is the worst thing to do.
Conservative government? Where? If the United States government was conservative -- this war would've been over a long time ago. A true conservative (unlike Bush, who was a liberal) would made a few phone calls to Missouri shortly after 9.11.01 and ordered a few B52 bombers and the war would've been over in 6 months. Walled up boarders? Our boarders, unbelievably, are still wide open and accessible, unfortunately. By inhumane tactics, I'm sure you are referring to the al Qaeda beheadings...
I'm sure your political supporters thank you for your conservative comments. Sorry to have offended you. Think a little deeper, and you might see I was also speaking on a whole other level... but, that would be a lot to ask of most conservatives, so don't worry about it.

disagree about pre-emptive attack... there are other ways to deal on the world stage than send your army.
As for Saddam... killing him wasn't worth what happened to the people in Iraq.
