Any advise you can give on your 307 retro build? I just bought a 283 from a 65 chevelle and a small journal 327 crank. And so far that's all I've done.
would you be able to give advise on what to do on a 383 stroker? i don't know what kind of cam it has, previous buyer and the builder can't find out.I'm looking at hopefully hitting around 400 horse, this is my first build and don't have much knowledge on engines.sounds like you might be able to help point me in the right direction
Thanks,, I'm learning something everyday,,but what I do know is that when you go with a street cam with more than 230 degrees of duration @ .050 the brakes will fade due to a reduction of vacuum. There are several ways around this,,manual brakes,a vacuum pump, etc.More than 230 dur will also "push" you through a stoplighta.I usually run a dual pattern cam,,nowdays I'm switching to rollers because the oils don't have enough Zinc or Phosphorus and you end up with a dead miss where the cam sheared.
Oh well,,I traded around and got ANOTHER S10 !! LOL. It's an '86 model,,so I guess we're back on for sticking this in an S10.I'll use a Turbo 350 because it's so cheap and reliable.
You're right I do. I run a bunch when it's not in a vehicle pulling a load, otherwise I set the timing while driving up our mountain. On my '48 I have a rod (w fulcrum joints)that goes through the firewall and connects to the distributor and ends up under the dash (in my reach while driving). I can set the timing while under a load and to whatever fuel is in the car.Good ear Bro - .
What is your cam, I hope your one will last more then my 292H, This time I will go for a XE276HR, the 292 have a too high power band you have to set the cut-off at 6500 to enjoy the ride like it can be!!!
Bubblelicous dawg! For 27 years we used to have a Classic Rock radio station called "Magic 105",,it has since been taken down and now in it's place is a station that plays anything.
my 383 is almost complete, ive been spending on it for 2 years (being built by Rebello Racing, Antioch CA)i have $7000 in the longblock, hope to have it dyno'd by end of feb. expecting around 500hp on pump gas. im lookin for an old chevy truck to put it in. i cant wait im so stoked. is the old car in your vid what your engine is for? what is it?
I'm using the Edelbrock 750 cfm carburetor.I use them because they're relatively cheap, easy to work on and easy to clean out after they sit awhile,(the modern gasoline congeals so fast).
I'm curious about the reciprocating assembly that you're using. I know that the less expensive stroker cranks are externally balanced. Do you have one of those particular cranks? I have a '72 four bolt block thats all machined and clearanced for a stroker crank. I would like to use an internally balanced assembly, for the higher quality, and was wondering if you knew of any sources that aren't too expensive.
If memory serves me,the crankshaft is a scat 9000. I think it was right around $240.oo. I bought a new 400 flexplate and balancer.I looked at all the receipts needed to byuild this and they total about $2030.oo.I did everything myself except the balancing. The machine work on the block and balancing was right at $500.oo.You can throw all the money you want to at an engine.I don't beat on 'em too hard after I build them, so even a "cheapy" lasts me years and a few times even a decade.
Yes,, it can take a 1000 miles or more to seat in the rings. The moly faced rings should seat in quickly though.

Is it normal for an engine to smoke for around 5 minutes after the first start?

I don't usually run bigger than a 230 duration @ .50.More than that and the brakes get soft.
