I still love the movie but the older I get the more I see why King hated Kubrick's interpretation of his novel. So much omitted or reworked in this movie. Jack's (Torrance) alcoholism is hardly touched upon for one and in the movie you don't get the arc of the character turning from good to evil like the novel. He's "off" from the start, hence the car ride to the hotel
