  • Imac greyish smudge

  • I got an 27 inch imac at work and it has the same problem, i guess it's the 2010 model since it's got the i5 CPU, my colleague has the same issues, only worse, so that definitely is/was a manufacturing issue and apple should have replaced it for you.

  • I have seen the same problem on an iMac 24" screen. Others with this same problem talk about the smudge problem on Apple's discussion forums. Look for the thread titled "Greyish Smudge marks behind the glass screen"

  • Had exactly the same issue. Just got the panel replaced but now there is a dead pixel in the new panel. Looks like this a design flaw and the dust will sooner or later appear again.

  • mmmmm i thought macs were perfect....

  • Mine is exactly the same, already had one replaced now it looks like im gonna be asking for a third!

  • Mine has similar "wavy-like" lines. They appeared some time ago and also some greyish zones that seem to have been "burn-in's" in the LCD.

Luckily the iMac is under warranty and is being serviced for a very annoying noise (like static) coming from the right speaker. One of the things that's being replaced is the LCD. Let's see how that goes.

  • I'm gonna make a new video of this today and show people how BAD the problem is now. It is all over the screen.

  • @logga00 I have 27 inch imac with same condition, take my words apple has replaced the screen 3 times with same problem. It appear that over the time depending upon the usage the internal fan sucks in dust and humidity which causes this problem. Is there any way to clean this or the 27 inch mac is a flop show ?

  • I have an ATI4850 graphics card if it matters to you.

  • I have an early 2009 24" iMac that has SIMILAR lines on the LCD. But mine appeared on the center of the screen (also on top).

It looks as if some worm has been carving tunnels inside the LCD.

My iMac is currently being serviced for an annoying static like sound coming from the right speaker, and the LCD is also being changed.

This seems to be a problem with the LCD itself!

  • Anyone know where to get a new imac for less?

  • @ipodzperson22 Prostitute yourself to a Mac Genius....maybe you’ll get lucky and get their discount.

  • I have the same problem, or similar... And growing. A shadow behind the LCD, not between glass and LCD. Look my video.

I've no idea what can I do

  • @audiojavi Yes this is the same problem and it wll get worse.

  • i own a mac and i have a long line right across my screen horizontally but i am using a Mac Mini with a hp screen so it could be my macs graphics card or its just the screen

  • @TheLivingDeadOne yes the 27 inch and the 21.5 inch are LED display.

  • @TheLivingDeadOne no, this vid was posted before the new led one came out

  • Same problem. I changed my wallpaper to plain blue to see it better. Now i can clearly see my old wallpaper in the blue. I am a dumbass! this is what happens when i dont use screensaver.... hahahaha crap!

  • Looks like a faulty video card would be my guess. The poor iMac

  • WT! I've never seen this before! So a corner of the screen starts bulging out and gets worse and worse? Will it happen with my 20" Intel iMac?

  • It could happen yeah.

Just keep a close eye on it and if you see anything send it off to apple while you are still in warranty.

I'm screwed now because the repair cost is almost as much as buying a new one.

  • what happened to your screen? did the problem grow?

  • Yes it's still growing! It covers most of the screen now.

  • after watching this i just noticed that my imac has the same problem on the bottom left corner :(

  • Mine is also getting worse. I've had a previous Imac, the G5 (isight) model that completely burned out only a few time after the warranty expired, and now this thing on the new one. Not so much a fan of apple anymore...

  • same problem here

  • It will get worse. Mine stretches all the way down the left side of the screen, it looks like dirty water that has dried out behind the screen. Also along the top of the screen, I can hardly work on it anymore.

  • Try taking off the glass panel over the screen, and see if the damage is on the panel rather than the actual screen.

If that's the case, then you can get a replacement panel for about $30 on eBay.

  • Power supple over heating behind screen.

  • It's actually just a poor quality screen :) the previous gen iMac (white g5) had a gorgeous screen

  • I was planning to buy an imac. being studing this product for a couple of months now, but the problems with the screen must be really frustrating because it´s an all-in one (for better and for worse!....) I´m not so sure about my purchase now... 2000 € is a looooooot of money APPLE! You must be coherent in EVERY aspect of quality. I ´m still a PC user, but I plan a move to mac, especially because of the operating system.i don´t no: maybe a mac mini, with an exterior lcd... or macbook

  • @pancracio14

    Hi,

Well I know this problem is not just isolated to me and it's a discrace to be honest. I also have a macbook which has other issues and my opinion of apple products is not very high anymore. I'm bitterly disappointed.

I would recommend getting an extended warrant if you can on ANY apple product you buy.

If I was you go with the new mac mini (full spec) and get the apple cinema display.

    Good luck!

  • I have the same problem, though mine is placed on the top center of the screen, instead of the corners. I'll try and get it replaced, but I'm worried the problem might come again and again until the warranty's off...

  • UPDATE. I have information from Apple service that this issue is not because of trapped dust from outside but because everything inside generates extreme heat inside panel. Display panel is burning and some particles fall off and accumulates between lcd and backlight!

This problem is present from the first white 24" iMac and they didn't solved it yet!

    Great design Apple!

  • i have exactly the same issue

  • We have purchased two 24" imacs in my studio 3 months ago and both of them have exactly same problem! I have removed front glass but as you already know problem is in LCD itself. Some dust is stuck between LCD and backlight panel.

I have a problem cause I can't afford to be without computer on job while apple tries to fix the problem. If it's my home computer I would replace it immediately! I am very disappointed in apple.

    Have anyone solved this problem?

  • Hey, thanks for the reply,

I am in the same predicament, i use this imac for work and can't afford to be without it for more than even a day!

The problem is getting progressively worse and is spreading down the left side of the monitor as what appears to be dirty blobs.

Also the colours of the screen wash out towards the bottom and if i put a solid colour on the screen it looks like a gradient!!!

For such a premium priced product i REALLY DID NOT expect this.

  • I guees this problem are caused due to bad display design. They are not sealed properly and fans are blowing dust in to it.

I will replace it before warranty expires, but how should I know if all imacs displays are faulty? In that case we will have same issue within few months of use. You pay 2000$ for something so bad. I've always thought that macs are overpriced but now I am convinced to it.

Display have extraordinary image quality but what's the use of it if you have dust all over it?

  • I've called Apple service and they confirmed that all iMac 24" LCD panels are faulty!!! They will replace my panel but they are not assured that new panel would not have same problem soon!!?? How about that??

Advice: stay away from iMacs as you will end with crappy display when your warranty expires. Maybe it's another way for Apple to sell 3 year service plan??

  • Does it look like its steamin up inside? it happens unfortunatly. apple dont seem too aware of it. but if u leave you mac running it goes. also its good to warm your room up. humidity affects it. if it is the problem im describing. sending it to apple is pointless. the "glass" (its light plastic) screen comes off. its held in with magnets so just wipe it =) search youtube theres a pretty good vid were a bald guy explaines how to do it easy as pie.

  • Hi, thanks for the reply,

it does not look like it is steaming up inside no, it looks like small scratches behind the lcd! it's really strange, you can't see it so well on the video but there are some very small scribbles. It does not bother me but just thought i would document it.

    Thanks

  • its herpies

  • I have this too 2!!!

  • I had that too and i send it to repair..

They swap for a new screen..

nothing u can do about it..

Take to warranty and they will fix it :(

  • Men I have this too!!!(((
