  • The clearly edited two different performances. The flutist's outfit changes several times, plus: when she is wearing NO cardigan, there is audience standing/sitting on the steps on the right next to her, wheras when she is wearing her cardigan, there is noone there.

  • 0:35 for start.

  • the flutist is hot

  • star wars

  • who is the flutist?

  • this song is freaky....but its very nice!

  • from the list of emotions music is written to encompass, this one i find to be one of the more elusive. it's sought after for sure, but I've yet to hear anything more mysterious than this piece.

  • is that a glass harmonica?

  • @looney1023 This piece was originally written for the glass harmonica, but it's an extremely rare instrument. This performance instead uses a celesta (a keyboard instrument that uses metal bars instead of strings), which is most famous as the instrument used in "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from the Nutcracker suite, and more recently, "Hedwig's Theme" from the Harry Potter series.

@katinkers: Another "mysterious" piece you should hear is "Neptune" from the Planets suite.

  • aaaaah,the favourite one!:)

  • Listen to Tyrano's lair from Chrono Trigger. You'll notice a lot of similarities.

  • @fire12321 ya it must be LOVE... <3

  • Wow!! Saint-Saëns Aquarium + Sir Roger Moore : is that poetry at its best!

  • This, in my opinion, is, by far, the best of the Carnival of Animals. This composition stirs something in me that no other music does.

  • omg! This is in the Simpsons!

  • Disney has used this piece in several things.

  • the 4 people that disliked this must have some kind of mental disease. this is a beautiful piece of music.

  • This song is so beautiful. I can't help but choke up when I listen to it.

  • It's from Harry Potter!

  • @sophchampion It might sound like it but its not. All music from the Harry Potter films is original composition by John Williams.

  • roger moore, no way

  • It reminds me of the intro theme to Beauty and the Beast and Nightmare Before Christmas.

Makes me think that Disney did something with this song in one of the Fantasia films too.

  • does anyone know what movie this is from? i can't remember.

  • @bachismybiddy i dont know the english name and im not sure if im right, but i think its from "carnival of animals" ;)

  • @bachismybiddy u probably remember it from "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".

  • @bachismybiddy if not from benjamin button then from beauty and the beast maybe

  • @bachismybiddy It was in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button trailer.

  • The creeper is Julian Rachlin, the one who organized the group. He and Janine Jensen (the female violinist) used to date, but I'm not sure if they were going out when this was filmed. Maybe this music just puts him in the creepin' mood.

  • i find this quite scary.. i think it was in the trailer for a murder mystery on the bbc or something but it gives me shivers... beautiful but creepy

  • i play DnD alot and i GM too and this would make a great "enter the mystical _____(insert place here)" music

  • Pretentious twaddle written by a straight white christian male, narrated by a straight white christian male. Where are the people of African descent among the musicians? Or among the vast majority of musicians in these euro classical videos with very rare exceptions?

  • @dawg00000 Why does there have to be? Why all the quota-filling? Does the fact that it's all white people playing diminish it's value? I don't think so. The fact that there are few people of African descent in orchestras means that few people of African descent are trying to get into orchestras. Instead of placing the blame on us, why not try exposing more people to this music?

  • @principalbass, No quotas, just goals. People of Color are exposed to this twaddle in the schools, so why aren't orchestras choosing Black musicians?

  • @dawg00000 Classical music is not "twaddle". This is cultual music, as much as rap is for black people. Why are there less white people rapping and playing basketball? Because it's a cultural attitude. Black people may be exposed to this in school, but that's not going to inspire them to want to be involved in it. That motivation has to come from within, and it seems that kids just don't want to play in orchestras. Professional organizations can't accept people who aren't applying.

  • @principalbass, Children of Color would apply but they know they have to be 10x better than others to be successful. Asian children are promoted in a divide and conquer strategy: promote Asian students as a model minority in order to make other children of Color look bad.

  • @dawg00000 Saint-Saens was an atheist. This is Romantic music, not Classical music. Where are all of the European people in videos of traditional African music, with very rare exceptions? I don't see why anyone would write off an entire type of music simply because it falls closer to one culture than another. The fact is that there are plenty of black concert musicians who play European fine-arts music, but a person's own background should have no bearing on the music they choose to play.

  • @tegrenath, There's a difference: white folk don't want to play African music because they're racist; Communities of Color have to play 100x better just to make it into a euro classical orchestra because of racism. There are some but not "plenty" of black concert musicians. They're performing because they're 100x better than the white folk and so can't be denied.

  • @dawg00000 you are an idiot.

  • Magical.

And by the way I doubt Julian Rachlin has any trouble getting laid.

  • I think someone wants to get laid...

  • i love this won

WHO THE CABBAGE IS ROGERT MOORE???? O.O

btw i love his words :)

  • HOLY CHRIST ITS ROGER MOORE

  • I find the inserted animations/videos more distracting than helpful. I'd rather look at the performers.

  • Hey, it's Roger Moore!

  • @MirokuMG he conducted the score with his eyebrows!

  • wow the tellers voice in the begining gives off the best enchanted yet creepy intro for the song....... it sort of reminds me of the princess tutu intros......and for some reason this song always reminds me of beauty and the beast

  • This was used at EPCOT in the "Impressions Of France" movie

  • If you freeze the video between 1:02 and 1:04, look at Franetovic's expression [when she looks in Jansen's and Rachlin's direction]....priceless!!!!!! lol

  • TIM BURTON!! =O

  • I have searched a while for this beautiful poem! fits the music perfectly

  • beautiful !!

  • this remind anyone else of the old movie A.I.?

  • @TheArbiterReturns

yes! John Williams score was very inspired on the carnival of animals indeed. For me it 's his best score.

  • the violinist seems not to play, to me it looks as if he is not knowing what to do.

  • wait.... didn't disney use this in Beauty and the Beast?

  • @VABrew they used something similar. It was certainly inspired by this.

  • it can also be heard on the simpsons... you remember, this old theme park from marge's childhood.

  • He he the flautist looked at the violin like "WTF that mans about to rape 1st violin!" but this piece is AMAZING! it's so haunting and it reminds me of Babe.

  • Divno!! :)

  • I don't know why he would only let The Swan be published when he was alive. I mean, most of it is joking on other known pieces of music like the Can Can and his own Danse Macabre, but I think this is just as beautiful as The Swan

  • I think it's in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory....

    Yupp it is

  • heard the intro of this music somewhere? hmmmmm . . . how about walt disney's "The Little Mermaid"?

  • Beauty and the Beast maybe?

  • it's not the same song. but it's very familiar with the song in the beginning of walt disney's beauty & the beast

  • I know, I think I heard Alan Menken say somewhere that he was inspired by different pieces when he was writing the music for the movie, and this was probably one of his inspirations.

  • no. i don't think so.

  • @jackdiver it sounds like the intro to beauty and the beast but its not the same

  • this song is in the simpsons

  • so magical..

  • I'm sure remember hearing this tune on a Channel 4 (UK) promo for an airing of Walkabout in the mid 90's. Quite bizarre choice of music as the arid dryness of the Australian outback and an aquarium aren't much alike.

  • James Bond :D

  • music written by Camille Saint-Saëns

  • beautiful!!!!!!

  • Nice. Creepy, but still nice.

The piano sounds like a harp...

  • ayayay I love the flute... or the flutist ... well both actually

  • 2:15...are they falling in love? it looks so cute!

  • this is beautiful, but its a bit creepy for my tastes. a bit like an opening to some horror movie.

  • this was in a movie trailer. I forgot what movie though -___- x

  • i think it was in benjamin paton

  • ohh yeah! ahah thanks (:

  • Benjamin button

  • I KNEW I HAD THAT SONG SOMEWHERE!

  • It has been used in a multitude of movies and tv shows. I think the first time I heard it was as a kid in an episode of Ren and Stimpy lol

  • @Flanning Ah! So this is that piece I've been hearing!

  • And this is about an aquarium, huh? The theme is beautiful, but IMHO it's a bit creepy. >> I felt like hiding behind the sofa.

  • It's so pretty.

And is it just me or does that second violinist look at the first one a lot?

  • he really does, either he's following her cues...or someone has a crush!

  • He's jealous.

  • they were in a relationship at the time......

  • @fire12321 the first violinst it the time keeper. dont watch her and youll fall apart. He might have problems with slow tempos.

  • @fire12321 probably isn't used to being that close to a female XD

  • @fire12321 They used to date back then ;-)

  • @fire12321 Now, that's what you do when playing chamber music. You look and listen to each other. And especially at the leader( and group leaders).

  • @fire12321 he was doing her at the time this was recorded

  • @fire12321 whenever there isn't a conductor, the musicians tend to look at each others eyes and the way that they move as cues to start or stop playing

  • @fire12321 she's probably first chair and therefore the lead violinist, so the others have to follow her cues. I've noticed the other female violinist looking to her at the beginning of a couple of pieces, right before they are to come in. Most likely taking her (the first violinist) que as when to start.

  • The second violinist looks at the first violinist because she is the concert mistress and the entire orchestra follows her as much as the conductor. That's what they are supposed to do.

  • @msjuniejane1 finally, someone who understands. It's because they are constantly communicating visually as well as aurally that they play so perfectly together, and they do. Great performance!

  • sounds more like music from Beauty and the Beast or Anastasia to me.

  • unfortunately, its harry potter that sounds like the aquariam, it came waaay first...lol. and its because thay are in similar keys and use a lot of chromatic changes

  • oh its a mystery song

  • Ah! This song was played in Nodame Cantabile! I was always looking for this:) Its such a mysterious song

  • Why does this sound like the music from Harry Potter?

  • hot girl on the yazz flute mr burgandy

  • hey did anyone else notice how generic the fish looked at around 3:36? thats kind of a lame aquarium.

  • haha he must

  • nicely done mr bond

  • Ha ha, that one violinist is such a creeper!

  • @TheYellowQilin i know...dont get too close

  • @TheYellowQilin dont get too close

  • @TheYellowQilin I'm sure you've figured this out by now, but music (in my own expierience) is the most passionate form of communication. It's hard not to watch the first violin for me (I'm a cellist)

  • It's weird because I watched Beauty and the Beast this morning, and then The Simpsons' episode, "The Wife Aquatic" in the afternoon (it features this song). But somehow I kept wondering where I heard the song before until I drew the connection much, much later!

  • Thats what I thought! Cos I watched beauty and the beast and it sounds similar to when she's in the west wing, and then we did this in ballet class bout 5 years ago and then... I saw the curious case of benjamen button trailer finally found it lol

  • That one violinist keeps checking out the other violinist xDD Lmao. He's so dazzled too I thought he was gonna drool XD

  • so is 2:33, what the hell

  • wtf, i swear 0:49 and 2:13 are the same clip...

  • i love this! its so preaty!ican play this on my flute!

  • The Piano sound's like the fish's movements in the water...... Simply Lovely....

  • los simpsons

  • At 1:02 the flute player looks like she has spotted what the 2nd violinist keeps doing!!!

  • what IS he doing o.o"

  • .........dang they played this at the roy thomson hall today with a couple of other songs.the theme was astromy

  • the guy violinist keeps looking at the girl

  • i noticed that to,wierd.

  • They are a couple. It is in the documentary.

  • they're a couple lol

  • oh my god! I love carnival!! some years ago we played it with our shool-orchestra and with the choir. it was so cool...i loved it..

    thanks for uploading!^^

  • is this called concerto?

  • A concerto is a long orchestral piece where there is one (or a few) solo instrument(s) throughout. This is more of an extended chamber ensemble, if you want to talk about instrumentation; or a suite, if you want to talk about musical form.

  • I'd quickly like to mention that it in fact was something he intended to be humorous.

The Carnival of the Animals suite was entirely dedicated to animals though, so it's pretty much a given that Saint-Saens didn't call it fog.

  • aquaruim as in the notes dancing around like fish-for the paino

  • I meant: they were, by the time,.....

  • omg the second violinist looking at the 1st violinist thing is really creeping me out...should that be allowed lol?!

  • They are boyfriend and girlfriend. At least they are, by the time of this performance.

  • also, they need to adjust to each others playing..

  • Is it just me, or is it REALLY disturbing the way the second violinist keeps looking at the first violinist...?

  • its not just u- i reckon!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This reminds me of a Dr dolittle tape i had when i was little, read by alan bennet, i loved it XD

  • this is my song for ballet, and i am also in wild donkeys, and pianists.

  • YES! THIS IS IT ive been looking for this all morning it's been stuck in my head hooray!

  • Does anyone know where I could get a recording of this and all the other pieces in the entire performance?

    Thanks

  • I can get you a fair FLAC of the whole piece if you want to. Send me a message.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes ,I would love that.

Do you have the entire performance?

    Thanks so much

  • Its Kinda scatterd over Youtube but, I think Might be in one wole vid

  • I didn't know you could play this masterpiece with such a small band

  • Very nice piece, matched by the beauty of some of the performers !

  • The keyboardist looks like Marissa Robles...

  • I love this song^^

  • Dick Dale remixed this for Space Mountain at Disneyland.

  • I remember that! It's funny how melodies just stick i oyur head from when you where little.

  • That violin player is a letch.

  • And the violinist is looking that way because he's trying to stay with her.

  • stay with her? its not the hardest piece on earth to play on violin :P

  • For heaven's sake.

This is not from ANY movie, it is from the Carnival of the Animals.

Even if it has been used in cinematography, that work is not where this piece is "from".

  • that guy violinist is a creeper :l

  • this song is so overused in shows and movies everyone keeps saying things like, is this from harry potter or something.

    this shit has to stop

  • 0:34 < this is for anyone who wants to listen to it straight away. :)

  • This one is my favorite :)

  • sounds a bit creepy -.-

  • harry potter sounds alightly alike only because of the mysterious note inside

  • i remmeber this from the beauty and the beast

  • Whoa, wtf is with the guy on the violin?!? he keeps looking at the other girl on the violin like a nasty creeper.... gross

  • They're dating...

  • i know hes like "hey....you smell good"

  • I love how it does the transitions.

  • Isn't this from "Edward Scissorhands" or something?

  • I have a vague recollection of this being used on a Channel Four trailer for a screening of Walkabout in the mid-90's. When you think about it, it's quite a bizarre choice, with two things more different than an aquarium and the Australian outback harder to find. Of course, I might be mistaking it for a similiar sounding piece 12 years on.

  • Beatiful. Yes, that's what i was thinking harry potter. Tee Hee!

  • Sounds like a mix of Harry Potter and Beauty and the Beast

  • gorgeus

  • absolutely awesome piece of music! first heard it when i was really young watching disney's Beauty and the beast. Ive always loved this song!

  • This isn't the one from Beauty & The Beast, but you were on the right track! Alan Menken, the composer of that movie's soundtrack, said himself to be inspired by this piece when creating the themes and such. But this is Aquarium, by Camille Saint-Saëns. :)

  • Oddly enough the first time I heard it was on "The Simpsons."

  • i remember hearing this somewhere on television as well, and now that you say it, it IS the simpsons. i think it was like the one where they flashback or something

  • This is a piece from the french compositor Camille Saint-Saens "Le carnaval des animaux" . At the origin the piano part was played on a celesta , a type of organ that sounds very "cristallin".
