@peleth interception numbers are great and all, but they're only PART of what makes a great shut down corner (much like sack numbers for a D-Lineman, another overrated stat)....a shut down corner smothers his target, whenever the receiver makes a break or a move, the CB is right there on him as if he's the WR's shadow....Lester was brilliant at that...besides that, when you're a great cover corner, no one is going to throw the ball your direction too much anyways
the greatest OVERALL shutdown corner is the one who best brings about the failure of the receiver he's guarding to do his job.
(ie, with the fewest penalties, and while adhering to the game's rules and regulations, preventing the receiver from advancing the ball)
Since interceptions are only PART of that equation, and since Lester Hayes consistently and aggressively SMOTHERED receivers in that quest, I STILL consider him the best corner in history!
@dukenthaylor and without the stickum in sb 18 he shut down hall of famer art monk until the the end of the 3rd qtr....when he slipped.... but basically made him a nonfactor on the biggest stage of them all....give it up for the judge....my favorite raider all time
@theman1819 people always ask me that. think about this.
MY hof critera is in this order; impact on the game, stats, titles. example, branch's career is comparable to swanns and bob hayes. hayes is in on impact primarily because like branch he played a role in the nfls deep ball evolution.
the pro football hof was est in 63. pro football in 1920. 17 players a yr inducted. they are clearly way behind the curve and players suffer. increase them.
@theman1819 there is no denying lesters impact... this talk of the shutdown corner, denying 1/3 of the field to qbs and wrs, etc... playing on the island. all that talk started in the 80s because of lesters dominance. thats when they did indepth research on the CB position. the stickum talk is bull shit too. all these wrs, dbs and even qbs play with gloves now...yes i know the advantage of wearing gloves. I remember when that started too. the wrs wore scuba gloves back in the day...
@theman1819 i said all that to make the point....you cannot take players out so thats an unrealistic question and a way to look at it. hayes isnt the only one...there are many players that should be in. they could fix the curve and increase inductees...which will never happen. but your real question is, out of those players eligable now and in the near future, who should he go in before. and i say he's past his time. he should go in now. and those other players wait like he has....
If that's your way of saying he wasn't good without stickum, he made four Pro Bowls after 1980, so obviously it wasn't stickum that made The Judge a great cover corner
Awesome commercial! Way ahead of its time
