  • BANG ON CORRECT! The only way to change the "System" is to vote with what fuels the system - Money. We need to starve the beast and feed what is beautiful.

  • I saw one of your videos on reddit.com and now I've been listening to you rant about things for over an hour. a lot of the same things upset me... especially regarding the state of the world.

  • Jamie have you heard of Jacque Fresco and the Venus project.

  • aaaah what a flaming video

so what was your point? buy cheap food with market sticker on it? it has the same bad stuff pesticide s**t in it as do the other brands...

And the thing about the bad rich farmer with legs on the desk... yes he surely just sits there and the yuck vegetable grows without a drop of sweat, not talking about all the donations the clean farmers get...

Now this was the most socialist nonsencefull self-contradicting video I have seen this year... well spent ten minutes

  • you should have your own tv show

  • @HOUNDF0X ... it would just steal his time and wouldn't make him better than he is right now. IMHO

  • what you are describing is a phenomenon called "perceptual infrastructure", it is the bane of the modern way of thinking

  • You are being hypocritical in this video. For example, you comment on people wanting to find the best parking spot. For them, maybe this is their "awesome" or thing to do - whatever; they choose it. It wastes fossil fuel, right? Well, what about your "awesome"? A big robot that essentially serves no purpose and is a waste of a lot of resources?

I don't think your project is wasteful personally, but you should consider this juxtaposition when attacking others' behaviors.

  • @sacreebluee The first time a giant robot save your life i want to hear that again.

  • @tyab87 I will yell it again when my superb parking lot skills save my life! : )

  • @sacreebluee I can just get the picture... the police and the mafia in an epik car chase... but this time they are together following you. You see the perfect spot and master a 90° turn parking, with 1 millimeter between you and the front car and half millimeter in the back. You get out and the gangsters and the cops shot you serveral times and you die while Jamie is saving poor kids from starvation while riding a badass giant robot.

  • @tyab87 You almost got it right! Let me fix it for you:

I am getting chased in my car, but it's by a huge robot - quite similar to Jamie's. It had been militarized and made into a killing weapon. Then, I see the perfect spot and master a 90° turn parking, with 1 millimeter between me and the front car and half millimeter in the back. I jump out the passenger side door, and just as the robot is stepping over it to crush me, I detonate the explosives inside!!

"Where you gonna park now?" I ask.

  • @sacreebluee And then you feel something in your nape. You put your hand there to check, and you see it's a huge piece of glass from the explosion. You die thinking "gawd damnit if i only parked the car in a bad spot".

  • Things I no longer buy, but make from scratch instead = things others can do:

    mac n cheese

    rice-a-roni

    granola bars

    pie

    chinese food

    grow my veggies in season

Marketing = my living for 30+ years, don't kill us, we take our orders from the corps and most of the time we have zero choice in things. One huge change: how much less chemical/paper/film waste is made from the business of marketing, it's digital now till it's printed. It used to be VERY damaging to the planet, very toxic to create.

  • great post... the only problem is the big corps own the store brands too...:-( yes, buy fresh and local as much as possible!

  • Why are you wearing the chains again?

  • The only reason I will buy a name brand over a store brand is a difference in ingredients. Especially juices, name brand juices will _sometimes_ use sugar instead of corn syrup as a sweetener. Of course I can always opt out and make my own juice with a juice machine, but that is only if I have money to burn.

  • Jamie man... I hear you, but when people pay for things, they are getting (or think they are getting) more than the physical goods they receive. Marketing is more than just "tricking people into buying more expensive stuff", its fundamentally about fulfilling (or if you are feeling cynical, pretending to fulfill) more needs than purely the obvious. To see how we got into this complete mess with marketing, I'd suggest you watch a documentary called "century of the self", its on google videos...

  • That's some great philisophogisticistics again :) I can only totally agree on you. I'd also rather prefer visiting a farmers market then to buy this pre-packaged stuff in a store where only the big billion dollar company earns money on it.

  • Please post more of your thoughts.

  • You hit the ball right out of the park on this one. Especially the part about the parking spots. It drives me fucking crazy when my parents take 10 minutes to find a parking spot. I just say go for the first one, and they rarely listen. You sir, are a great man.

  • Trust me, Wal-Mart brand items are terrible. Black beans (uncooked) Wal-Mart brand are inedible.

  • I wasn't watch the video whilst listening to your rant - then at 4:55 I heard writing on a black board whilst you were saying "Let me give you an example" then numbers. I was pretty cool/coincidental.

  • @futsalfred2 , TO ANSWER YOU QUESTION; Because I want to support Any AMerican business still operation in the country. I am AMerican & as Jamie said, what you buy is a vote for what you believe. Did you know that to shopping stores one purchase is considered or equal to 16,000 votes in the corporate eyes. This means if 7 out of 10 people buy the product because it has some fancy package of colorful image on it & it cost more, to the company that sells it they will push that product. So I Buy USA

  • shit!!!! we have to help this guy he's being kept prisoner,... he's chaind up and stuff..... ok he's funny and makes a cool robot and stuff but I don't think he enjoys it!!!! it's not fair... he's doing it agains his will!!

    seriously what's with the chains

  • @hyeclass It's for strength training, you can buy weights for your hands and feet that do the same thing.

  • Very profound. I see the system we live in like you do but you word it in a way that makes me see actions i can take to counter act the system

  • Basically this: cracked.com/article_18805_5-ways-stores-use-science-to-trick-you-into-buying-crap.html

  • Man, that parking space thing drives me insane! Happens to me all the time when I'm riding with other people.

Sometimes I actually have them just let me out of the car, and I go in by myself and get half way finished before they even come in because they are out there circling like a vulture looking for a "good parking spot".

  • Have you been watching the Shaytards when they say they "Got the best parking space in the lot"?

  • Jaimie for president!! :P

  • So are ya still selling those giant robot t-shirts? Cause if you are, i might scrounge up the mula to get one. you know, voting with my money and all that ;)

  • Comment removed

  • That's one of the main problems with capitalism: If there are similar products by different firms at different prices, consumers will buy the product from the less expensive firm, regardless of the firms' ethics and processes.

  • There was an article out there that actually showed that even if we all went with zero-emissions cars in one day, it wouldn't make a dent in the pollution we emit. Apparently ONE cargo ship emits more pollution than all the cars in the world because the fuel they use is rat-bastard filthy, but they use it because it's cheap. And there's well over 10,000 cargo ships in the world right now.

  • @ZeroPointAlpha I would really like to see where you get that one cargo ship = all cars in the world because that sounds pretty bs to me..

  • @mastersniper117117 I tried linking it here but Youtube wouldn't let me. :/

  • @mastersniper117117 And you were sorta right, had a brain fart. It was 16 cargo ships that put out more pollution than all the cars in the world according to the article, which I sent you a message with a link so you can see it.

  • Subscribed... you are awesome

  • maybe she would rather give 2 dollars to a legitimate company, then 1 dollar to an evil corporation. buying the cheapest stuff is sometimes creating a much worse problem. it encourages even cheaper shittier products. and so on and so on. much better to buy from the company that puts out the best product, then contributing to the real problem, huge corporations and their store brand crap.

  • @aroneous Most of the store brands are made by the named brands anyway. Like the cheaper batteries? Those are made by Energizer and Duracell, so either way they're getting your money. :V

  • Not to stray from the meaning of your whole post. I must say that right after I got out of school I was employed by a large food packaging plant. I can say in my experience with 100% certainty that "generic" and "name brand" items are the same. We would run "x" item for so many hours and then we would simply switch the box to "x generic" item. Same stuff, just a different box. I shop this way from having this experience. Thank you for putting this out there for those that have not!

  • @synthox1 I worked in a disposable baby diaper factory and we did the same thing. The only change we did on the diaper line was change the box it was put in.

  • i usually go to family owned stores and food stands that are scattered around here. the produce is better and the people you meet are nice. they wont let big stores like walmart come up here cause it would destroy their market

  • I think the problem isn't brands, people should actually just read the ingredients on the box, they might get freaked out by what they way. My dad, rather than thinking about brands, always looks to see which has the least processed ingredients.

  • I have to get my wife to watch this. She seems to think that she has to spend every last dallor we have everyweek on shit from china that we didn't need in the first place. Or it breaks after a week and is off to a land fill somewhere.

  • How about the jerk who flies past you on the highway only to end up behind the jerk at the stop light. The fuel used in the acceleration and extra 10 mph down the road could be saved by patience.

  • Are you still planning to fireproof that place? Maybe spray it down with some gypsum plaster? Because seriously, all the recycling in the world won't help if you end up contaminating your soil with dioxins from thousands of burnt fishboxes. My hometown is in the process of building a 1.3 acre plastic-lined landfill to get rid of dioxin-contaminated soil because somebody decided to burn the wrong building materials. Anyway... best wishes. :)

  • yes, you are part caveman..........the world could use a few more cavemen. I could not agree more with what you said.

  • Also this reminds me of those fancy shmancy cat food comercials. Your cat dosn't need a meel at a five star restaurant.

  • I wish people would pay more attention to what they buy. It could help alot of problems we have now days. Plus they could save alot of money.

  • you talk sense and make me want to better myself :)

  • The way I see it, the problem is that people don't have a good idea of what the big picture looks like. That scenario you described in your video, with the very clear-cut choice, is an example of the big picture. You seem to have a good grasp of it, which might also be one of the factors behind your engineering prowess, but that's beside the point. When most people go shopping, they don't see the big picture. They're caught in a miasma of preconceptions and reptile brain biases.

  • I agree with you 100% on the crap they use on marketing materials....but the irony is when you get your toy to market, you aren't going to be selling it in a brown cardboard box....it's going to be in blister pack with some fancy sparkly backing. ;-) Keep up the good work....have always enjoyed your thoughts!

  • @web4deb Yeah I find that ironic. I guess all the needless wastage has pervaded our culture to such an extent that its really hard to avoid it. You can give your $1000 to the farmer instead of the fat cat, but disadvantaging the product you've spent years and lots of money on developing is a harder call.

  • @web4deb Then again, perhaps he COULD convince the mfgrs to put it in a plain, brown cardboard box (with primitive, JME-style graphics) and it might actually get MORE attention than it would have otherwise because it's so different from the plastic, nasty bright-colored crap they usually sell! Now that's smart marketing!

  • And hilarious too

  • I knew it was a good idea to subscribe to you. You are a voice of reason in this world.

  • I am VERY glad to hear someone else with common sense :) Thank you.

  • that light going down half your body was really annoying haha

  • @Permafrst it sorta looked like an alternate reality where his shirt was blank half the time

  • i wonder how many innovation hours have been lost to facebook over its lifetime. a saddening and shocking number no doubt. people should get on with their own lives and be less concerned about making sure they catch up with every little thing someone else is doing.....and these virtual farms. it's tragic.

  • You sound like a communist haha

  • @FURRYYAK Pfff. I’ve had people tell me ALDI were a communist store because they only have one brand of sugar.

  • I remember a Seinfeld episode where one the characters got a great parking spot next to their apartment, but then they didn't want to go anywhere because the spot would be taken. So in this case, less money went to the gas company.

  • I choose to shop local when I can(the neighbor market) I walk or ride my bike when I can and feel so much better when I do.... saving money is easy if people just turn off the TV once and a while and think for themselves!

  • I used to eat marshmallow fluff on graham crackers. I bought the big brand once, and while I liked it, I decided to go and just try the cheaper version.... it was twice as better, in a container twice the size, and almost half as cheap per container.... so ya

  • yea fuck capitalism. Lets all be farmers and pool our money together!

  • Yeah, people are getting lazy.

  • Pestecoid: Noun; commonly known as pesticide spewing robot. .......I agree. I have never seen a parking lot that took me more than a minute to cross entirely. I get a kick out of folks that wait 60 seconds for a space that is two spaces down from an empty one. Human nature is very susceptible to some funny habits if we don't stay vigilant.

  • its not as black or wihte as you say but i get your point.

  • in the lady who does not buy store brands defense, some store brands taste like total asshole! what are your thoughts on organic produce? organic produce typically costs more per unit.

  • @CaptainNensho True story. Not all things are created equal. I'm not opposed to buying store brand when the taste is the same, but when taste/texture is different from what I enjoy, branded item gets my money.

  • @CaptainNensho Store brands do in fact have a few minor differences in quality. I remeber hearing that store brands and normal brands usually come from the same factory, its just that the store brands use the tailings left behind or something. And then theres colourful packaging and 'brand tax' which jacks up the price of branded varieties.

  • @futsalfred2 Got a source for that info?.. Didn't think so. It's ideas like those that breed a system where it's more profitable to spend money on marketing than on making a better product.

Go buy a store brand can of tuna fish and a well known brand. Take home, open, drain and spread them out on a plate. Which one has larger pieces of actual fish in it? From my store it isn't even close. If anything's made from tailings it's the brand name--just look at it. Seriously, you should try this.

  • @kesmeby No, I don't have a source. It was just hearsay, seemed pretty plausible though. The difference in quality could be psychological, or it could be real. Who knows?

  • I agree with you, your spending habbits is more important than you vote. That's why Jamie I go out of my way & I am willing to spend 20-30-40% more for AMerican stuff. I'm so anal about it I sometimes will go without something if I can't find American or wait to buy something till I can find an AMerican Made product. I tried to buy a pair of (water proof) boots last month. It has taken me hours on-line, hours of phone calls & hours to research this one idem. Not many people will do that.

  • @StUDioROMe And why is it that you go out of your way to buy American stuff?

  • Hmm, a bit of an extreme reaction to a brand snob, but OK....

I agree that people shouldn't make blanket statements like "I don't buy store brands" cause it shows they didn't think about their decision.

I don't buy store brands MOST of the time because they taste different. You advocating everyone by RC cola? :)

    Nice rant though! :)

Oh one more thing... Your Robot toys won't sell very well if one of those marketing guys doesn't get involved..

  • You get this upset over $1? lol

  • @Tom83L I don't think you get it.

  • @Tom83L

The thing is, at some point in most people's days, they find themselves saying that, or something like it. "You walk that mile instead of driving, just to save a little gas?" "You buy from a farmer's market? Is just one person going to make a difference?"

And the answer is, yes. One person's actions make all the difference that person is capable of making. That's what Ghandi meant when he said to "be the change you want to see in the world.

  • I know. My brother will not go to Wal-Mart because he says every thing is from China. I don't care because its cheep. I'm not going to spend more money on stuff from a fancy store. And I figure they are so poor I would give them some business to buy some rice. As far as the parking thing Gypsy is handicap. And we hate when people park in the handicap spot and don't have a permit. I never was so rude.

  • I love the things you say

    You're so inspiring :)

  • i am a organic farmer :)

  • Oh and just to mention this: Its basicly only in America culture is like that. You should move to Norway Jamie! A bit colder but people have your views of things.

  • @Itsfunnydammit Yeah. It seems only in America is there this extreme, conspicuous and wasting consumer culture.

  • As it stands I believe on average we expend 80 % to get something worth 10%. eventually some poor schmuck has to make up the difference. Do you want to be that schmuck? I sure don't! Make a difference! Be a conscious sustainable living being! Oh and have a nice day Jaimie! & Dashaina & Baby

  • Store brands are most of the times the given choice. Stupid people buy garbage. And people looking for the perfect parking spot are just lazy. They're so lazy and unfit that their brains wont understand it doesn't even take a minute to walk a 100 meters (or yards). I bet they ride the car to empty their mailboxes by the roadside at home...

  • I've been wondering, Jamie, how you get internet out there in you geodesic dome in the middle of the woods in vermont

  • @TheScientist0000000 Satellite internet.

  • I AM DOWN WITH THIS.

  • YES This why I love this channel

    Thumbs up and faved

  • Best example;

    Name Brand Tuna = paste

Store Brand Tuna = chunk tuna

I haven't bought Starkist, Bumblebee or any major brand in years but opened a can for my mom the other day, Starkist and it was a can of tuna paste.

  • you tellem Jamie!!

  • You have some decent points, but the anger and making out certain things to be truly evil kind of spoils it. I know that there are many humble, hard-working, only decently paid marketers out there.

  • @GarothThorp True, and some of us have only Social Service clients, people that help other folks who don't get a fair chance. or Green clients.

  • Dude, you are awesome. Keep making these videos, they do inspire people!

  • True, but dont forget that sometimes the more "fancy" one tastes way better and also is better for the enviroment!

  • In the words of the late great comedian Bill Hicks, "If you work in Marketing... Kill yourself."

  • @WizzleThump Well... I was kinda going for... Quit your job, and do something where you can actually live with yourself.

But.... there's always more than one way to find a solution. :-P

  • @JMEMantzel I have a business degree and had a couple job offers but I turned them down because it just doesn't fulfill me, or I feel like I'm not helping anyone. So now I'm going to teach until I can farm to feed hungry people. I want to grow food forest and maybe do some aquaponics.. its gonna be sweet

    -Jeffro

    From TEXAS

  • @WizzleThump Actually, he said it was not a joke. He really ment it.

  • Comment removed

  • @WizzleThump I work in marketing... But it's for a snowboard brand and we eliminated packaging this year actually to save money and resources. I don't feel like killing myself. Marketing is a broad term. Jamie is right though. Right or wrong it only matters what sells.
