very nice aquarium. i'm thinking off putting a few clown loaches to live with my iridescent sharks, oscar, gar, and ghost knife. do you think they'd be a good choice as bottom feeders?
wow! there going fucking mental for that shrimp!!!!
i have a couple of glass shrimp in my tank now, would it be dangerous for them to feed my clown loachs cocktail shrimp? just incase they get a liking for shrimp :D
@chefkda Yup. Mine usually do that if they hide for a long time. They color up shortly though. GREAT fish! I didn't know they like shrimp! Got to get some now! Mine love peas!
43. Growth rates vary. In a captive environment like in an aquarium, there is a hierarchy for power and food. In other words, the larger clowns eat more, grown more than the smaller clowns. At the top of the hierarchy, some clowns can grow to over 12". At the bottom of the heirarchy, they may only grown to 5". These fish can live for 40 years, big or small. I plan to build them a large indoor pond / river tank in a year or so that's over a thousand gallons.
This river tank is 8ft long x 2 ft wide x 16 inches high. The tank system has 4 tanks and is about 400 gallons total.
What Stress? There hasn't been any deaths for about 1.5 years. They get about 3 or 4 meals per day. Water quality is superb. Nitrates are low. Water changes are done automatically and slowly(about 8 gallons per hour, 3 days per week) through a water misting system. These fish really got it good.
wow that is really a superb system. glad to know that these clowns got the care they need. i just recently added 2 more to my tank and i'm glad to see them fooling around and darting all over the place. is the shrimp you fed them the kind you find at the grocery? raw or cooked?
I have a hot and cold tap water line plumbed directly to the tanks drip/misting spray bar. The sump has an overflow that goes to a floor drain. When I turn on the tap water, the excess water goes thru the overflow to the floor drain. I usually just drip or mist the tap water in over several hours or days. I don't have chloramines in my tap water, so I don't need to use any dechlorinators.
85 gallons is OK small clowns, but they'll need something larger in a few years. Clowns need to be kept in groups of at least 5 and they appreciate plenty of water flow. Optimally, they should be in a group of at least 12, in at least 6 ft long x 2ft wide tank.
Awesome! I have 9 clowns in my 125 (3" to 5" lg) Thinking of picking up a couple of 6 inchers. Yeah - Clowns grow extremely slow and live for 15 -20 yrs (I think). The big ones are expensive but worth the price!
I've had the clowns 3 to 6 years and they are growing quite slow. I think thats because they spend much time and energy swimming in the high water in this tank. They range from 3" to 6" long from nose to tail.
Drool wish I had room for a 400 gallon bigest I can go is a tank with a foot print of 72" long 24" wide. Maybe I can learn to sleep on the floor who need a bed after all.
LOL @ "Maybe I can learn to sleep on the floor who need a bed after all". xD v/funny. i have a huge space near the entrance of my house, but money and time is my issue. i hate water changes...

why the small clawn loach there color are darker than the big ones?
mrzozo111 2 years ago
Clowns grey out from time to time for various reasons. Lighting, mood, and aggression are the most common reasons.

i've heard paler colors is actually a display of dominance, so it's likely that the larger clown loaches have less color
