Great job mate! I love how precise you play and how much feeling you put into it! I also uploaded an interpretation of this song just recently. It's in the video responces, you should check it out. Peace.
@PerpetualBassist Thanks! Also great job as well! I always like hearing this piece played, so much harmony going on and fun lines to play. I need to revisit this in the woodshed, thanks for the inspiration and most excellent playing!
The Final chord Is a WONG Maj 7????? or not??????In any case the bass tone is...horrific!!!!! (in this recording, i hope not, live) REMEMBER, his piece was played by GLENN GOULD......the " Double of GOD"
DUDE! How long have you been playing? And, how long did it take you to learn this thing?
I started learning it last week, and it's kicking my arse. I've been playing bass since 1992. I have HORRIBLE memory. I have to practice a passage a million times. Hell, there was a time a few years ago I could play "Teen Town" (at about half speed), but now I've completely forgotten it.
As a bassist I would recommend...good finger and fretting technique, using all four left hand fingers, one fret one finger rule, practice alternating picking any way you choose, develop your own style! But MOST IMPORTANTLY try and read alot of music! Not so much to be able to read a A or a Eb but to recognize rhythms when you see them! Having good timing is the most important, if you dont have that nothing else matters! Good luck!
I learned sth from bach, still think bass is not the right instrument to play that. You played good, yet the sound is so far from a decent piano player, or cello, or harpsichord. Too difficult to play it and to express feelings through it without making it a pure exercise
It's probably just my playing which is lacking expression and merely a technical exercise. The reason I say this is because if Bela Fleck can make classical music expressive on a banjo then I think it can be done on any instrument. Expression aside I think this piece is great for practicing technique on the electric bass.
the beauty of bach's compositions is that they are written with the notes in mind, not the instrument. you can transpose a bach piece to any instrument and if played properly, the notes will speak for themselves.
@lordkrandel I don't think the bass is the WRONG instrument for playing this, it's just not normally done this way. But if you hear Jaco's playing of this, he's just brilliant.
i'm learning this right now, i am four measures from the end and about to work on speed, since i am only playing it at like 85 bpm, but it is a bitch to learn, and i am loving every second of it. kudos to you my friend, i believe i will play it similarly to you at my recital.
people who hold the bass in their lap usually first played double or upright bass. and because of that they are more comfortable holding electric bass at an angle. or he just found it more comfortable to place it in his lap for this particular piece.
Great job. This has to be one of the most difficult pieces of music to play on the bass. It is not the speed but the musical jumps that are not easy on the bass. Once you get the music under your finger's, it is a rush to play due to the musical progression of the piece.
Did you just figure this out or did you have a notation for it? If you have it written out I would love to grab a copy of it. Extremely well played well done sir.
Bach is amazing, and with that, so is Jaco Pastorius, I'm currently working on this piece on my 4-string as part of my final year of high school. The tone you get out of your bass is awesome, unfortunately it will be a while before I get my performance to that speed. Thanks for the video, definitely will be benchmarking my own against it.
as a bass player i can tell you that there are hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of practicing that go into this song only for a minute and a half to come out of it.
thanks to u (codyking36) I learn something beautiful today, thank u I love all the jaco's legacy. by the way great piece of art I'm still trying to achive the speed of chromatic fantasy. ejoy u'r life
He actually had two basses that he used. One hasn't been found yet, and the other one turned up, the pawn broker told his family that he'd sell it to them for 30 grand.
has anyone noticed that in his description of this video it says "We Are Sorry".. . and it also says "We Are Sorry" right above him to his left, our right?? hmm. ..
VERY good! I'm learning this myself and it is very impressive that you can play it at that speed. Absolutely fabulous!
Though, if there is one thing I can put my finger on it has to be the last part with the chords. Let each note ring longer, and you didn't remember the very last chord!
Anyways, awsome! You have gained much respect from this humble bassist. :D
whenever i lose motivation for learning this piece, watching this vid makes me feel as amazed as when i first watched it. i'm up to about 30 seconds on your vid and it's taked months so far, i can totally feel how much time and concentration went into that
