Mandarin drakes not only beautiful but they're also among the few drakes that actually reunite with the hens to look after the ducklings, the others being the American and Australian Wood Ducks.
Are they native to the United States if so where? I live in New York. I have seen the beautiful Wood Ducks but never a Mandarin! What gorgeous birds! I would love to see them wild at the preserve on Long Island!
These birds are not native to North America but sometimes captive birds get free and become "feral", like these in the UK. I heard about a small colony that supposed to exist in lower Fairfield Cty, Connecticut (I'm in New Haven) but have never seen them. They are related to our native Wood Duck.
