I saw this film premier at the New York Film Festival. Ira Wohl, Philly and his mom were in attendance. When the lights came on there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Wonderfully done!
Oh, thank you so much for letting me see this wonderful doc again; I had it on videotape for years and would watch it over and over. Hadn't seen it in a very long time, and it is as moving, charming, and heartbreaking as ever. One of the best docs I've ever seen.
How do you fit in to all of this? Just a movie buff? Obviously, you are not Ira. Anyways, I digress..I left the transportation industry over forty years ago, assumed a Federal position, since retired. So, aside from the topic in question about 'Best Boy', I can not venture further. Sorry, it is what it is. Joe
No, not 'Danny'. I picked up Philly about three times, during moderate weather, if memory serves. Sidenote: If snow prevented me from a pickup, then ALL clients would have been abandoned for the day, as the run would not have left the garage. (Company policy for my company Al-Jac Bus, INC). The vans were yellow in 'Best Boy', and ours were not. I knew of Philly during the shoot, but started to pick him up after AHRC changed bus companies, which was after shooting started. Best to you, Joe
@geeayevette Thanks for the response, Joe! I know this movie by heart. Did you also pick up Chucky & Delores? And is Philly still alive? He's got to be about 90 if he is.
Ira, MazelTov! It's been a LONG time responding to this, as I've worked (in the abstract) with A.H.R.C. at West 5th Street, and other branches. I was one of the bus drivers ferrying Philly Et Al to and fro in the time during, and immediately following the filming of 'Best Boy'.
I'm not Jewish..but I've grown in a Hasidic community. So, I can commend you on one of the purist of Mitzvahs..that is of giving of yourself. And the doc was 'Pearls Story', I'm sure you will agree. Joe (Jan. 2011)
I love this film & pleased to see it up on YT. Thank you. ♥

@geeayevette You must not be Danny. Are you the guy who didn't stop when Philly was snowed in? Danny would have stopped.
