Man, I agree with everything you've said. You should never expunge the word totally, but you should make a clear distinction between when it's appropriate and when it's awful. And (in my opinion) one of the worst uses is often overlooked: rap and hip-hop. It's not the WORST, granted - white hoods and burning crosses conjure up feelings of the true damage of the word. But it's close. And the true damage, I think, lies in how accepted it is by the people it harms the most.

Slaves were freed in an attempt to destroy the economy of the south so the north could win the civil war. Racism had nothing to do with slavery, it was cultural. Most of the slaves that were brought to the US from africa were savages. Anyone who didn't believe in god back then was treated like a piece of property rather than a human being.

Man, I agree with everything you've said. You should never expunge the word totally, but you should make a clear distinction between when it's appropriate and when it's awful. And (in my opinion) one of the worst uses is often overlooked: rap and hip-hop. It's not the WORST, granted - white hoods and burning crosses conjure up feelings of the true damage of the word. But it's close. And the true damage, I think, lies in how accepted it is by the people it harms the most.

Hmm.. If initially, it was an attempt to weaken the word; it may have worked. But now the word is propagated by its use. What is the point? I have friends who find it hurtful in its very essence, no matter who's lips it was uttered from.
