The truly definitive version ... Gary Moore was on fire here. And what a brilliant and beautiful song. And special guest Frankie Miller's vocals was like icing on the cake. Philo and the boys at their best for me ...
@DirkjeA This song was first officially released on the album 'Nightlife' in 1974 although there is an earlier bootleg version of it going around - worth checking out. Its really good too, even has different lyrics in places and some killer Moore guitar on it.
thanks for sharing this great ,great song with us. finaly i found the original track with frankie miller. phil lynot was an original artist, he was his time ahead.he was the rocker(r.i.p. phil)
I have been listening to Thin Lizzy for the last 45 minutes, it just reminds me how deep Phil Lynott is, he walked this Earth alone, his sadness just gets worse, and if I could just make him see, if I could go into the past to let him know how he makes my heart ache. I love him, I love his spirit, and I love his honesty. he had the choice to cover up his breaking heart. but he left us all the gift of listening to his music, and as we listen to his words we keep his spirit alive and intact!!
Not sure you can compare Jimi and Phil at all. Jimi only got 3 Studio albums in his short time(Up until SONY and his Family raped his estate) But Phil Lynott was a legend for sure, and yes probs the best Rock Frontman Ireland has ever produced. R.I.P to you both
love it....i wish he were still with us...such a great loss...R.I.P. Phil............love ya much man...just found u after all these years and u are gone...i am so sad ...
The ultimate hearbreak song; this original can never be duplicated even by Lizzy; the lead lines flow immaculately, they weave in and out, they jab, they cut and punctuate; such determination. Sade, she has an ear for excellence, out of all the crappy songs she was somehow introduced to this gem.
The late, great Gary Moore plays the lead guitar parts and solos here.It sounds to me that Gary was playing a Strat but I have never actually read any information concerning the guitar that he was using.
LOVE this song... It's RARE to find a song that has "both" great lyrics and matching rhythm / sound... This has the perfect blend of blues, instruments and lyrics that really brings out "emotion"...
If you listen, both Phil and Frankie are singing. Phil starts the lines and Frankie sings the second half and then they harmonize in parts. Thanks for posting it. Really takes me back. I'm a singer, bass player myself and when people ask me my influences and I tell them Phil Lynot /Thin Lizzy, I usually get that blank stare. So glad I got turned on to him/them back in the day. Not very mainstream where I came from but totally relevant and awesome......Oh and "Tin" relates to a model T Ford
The first time I saw Lizzy was at the Apollo in Glasgow. It was always like a bear pit, but when Phil sang this song, everyone and I mean everyone sat down and listened. Absolutely brilliant, and Frankie's voice is a huge bonus on an already great track
Much respect to all the fans of the original songs but I feel Sade's version so much more than this!! She just sounds so sincere in her take of this tear jerker.
This is one of those rare songs where I actually don't really like the original version. I find the Live And Dangerous version or Gary's own cover so much better than this. Still, just an opinion.
@Bonoerra Wow. Nice to know there are people on YouTube who respect someone's opinion as a valid personal preference, instead of just hurling abuse at them :)
@kinglouiebee lol i dont buy best ofs...no need to when you own the whole discography. but you're totally right, apparently moore was out of the band by that point but his solo was amazing and robertson didnt want to re-record it, so there you go.
@lazer59882 yes i mean why re-record it when moore nailed it already? u can just feel that soulful peter green style vibe in his playing even all the way up to still got the blues, which has a similar feel in the solo too.
@lazer59882 yes i mean why re-record it when moore nailed it already? u can just feel that soulful peter green style vibe in his playing even all the way up to still got the blues, which has a similar feel in the solo too. simply breathtaking!
@kinglouiebee i always liked robertsons solo on live and dangerous a little more though...and unfortunately im not familiar with any pre-buckingham/nicks fleetwood mac music, so i can't judge the peter green comparison.
Such a classic, we need true music like this in this Radio giant, record label controlled day and age we live in now. You could tell he ment what he was singing
I'm a massive fan of Sade, and heard their cover a few weeks back and loved it, had to check out the original, and I don't know which one I like the best, which is strange for me as I should say Sade, as I live for them, but the vocals in the original are so lovely, and moving too. GREAT SONG!

@JakeZealand I only know of this song because of Sade, their version is fantastic, but you don't always have to have a preference, just like both. I am a massive Sade fan, I love them, but I really like both of the versions. They both provide something completely different, Rock and Soul!
@JakeZealand I love Soul music too, I pretty much only listen to Soul music, Sade, Beverley Knight, John Legend, Leela James, R. Kelly, Bill Withers, Jill Scott, Nina Simone, all those greats, but I also love this version. It has Soul whilst being a Rock song! :D
Great guitar by Gary but this version lacks the drama of the live and dangerous track,(Robbo),which for me is one of the best live tracks ever. Mr Moore. You did'nt always get the credit you deserved and hopefully some of the so called guitar/music lovers who so casually slagged you off are feeling a bit ashamed now your gone. There again mate you probably would'nt give a shit anyway.RIP.
I actually didn't really like this song when I first heard it. I was into the faster heavier songs. Now that I've listened to it more and understand it better it has become one of my favourite songs.
I saw a great interview with Scott Gorham once. When he replaced Gary Moore in the band they asked him if he wanted to re-record the guitar solo in this song. He flat out refused.
You ain't kidding mate - can you even contemplate anyone writing anything like this these days ??!! All you hear is that fucking electro bass samey samey bollocks - drives me fucking mad...
