Why is Jimmy Pursey singing with a cockney accent? He comes from Hersham near Walton on Thames in Surrey about 22 miles from the east end of London and no one around there speaks with anything like a cockney accent.
Sounds like Nicki Tesco from the Members. Most these b punk bands sounded the same. Pub rock. There's only one great punk band: The Sex Pistols. The rest were followers.
Were these guys playing live cos the guitars are plugged in and JP sang to all the words so I can't tell if it was lip synch'd? Very energetic peformance!
This is Sham 69 on their first totps. Remember seeing it all these years ago first time round. The best band ever. Jimmy Pursey is the greatest frontman and him and Dave Parsons together were Sham 69. However things change and music goes on.....But no Jimmy Pursey = NO SHAM 69!
You'd never get a record like this today. The music industry has become far too capitalist and commercialised. Can you imagine Simon Cowell signing them up? It is people like him who have destroyed the passion, energy and creativity of British pop music. And what has replaced it? Sodding Westlife, Michael Buble and Strictly Come Dancing. Btw, I am female.
its a industry, all about teen bopper pop, boy or girls bands, I stopped listening years ago to be honest as its just "fast food pop" , no substance ,no meaning, but seems the ipod,mp5 generation like it shallow and meaningless.
@Feisty1967 You must be joking, this was as commercialised as 1978 got, skinhead band with no skinheads? WTF is that all about? Extremely poor immitation of The Clash. I am afraid capitalism and its corporate influence is a lot older than you realise.........sadly
This isn't live . . .Pursey has a live mic but the band is playing along to a studio track recorded 'live' before the broadcast. See the backing vocals on the chorus (but only Pursey is singing) and the guitar solo that starts at minute 2 with a second guitar backing it . . .but there's only one guitarist!

I'm afraid your wrong about Top Of The Pops, they virtually always insisted on the acts on the the show miming. I only remember two playing live: this one, and New Order playing "Blue Monday". I'm not sure how they got away with it, they just must have been very persuasive !
One of the reasons the Clash never appeared on Top Of The Pops was because they insisted on playing live. But they probably weren't very subtle with their persuasion !
This was one of the very few times a band were allowed to play live on "Top Of The Pops". Not sure how they got away with it, but one of the reasons was so that Jimmy Pursey could say hello to his Mum with his line "Who's on Top Of The Pops then, eh ?!"
Yes this takes me back to my youth when music was fresh and energetic, not like all the manufactured trash that's going about nowadays, i must be getting old.
yea, they couldnyt play nowhere because of the skinheads with their leopard skin hair, bunch of mindeless mugs spoiling it for every1 but long time ago now was all fun at the time
accually sham 69 had real trouble getting away from skinhead following and they became the media scapgoats for the rise of violence associated with skins at the time, blamed for inciteing race hate when all they were was east end punk but there was a fine line due to fact Oi was east end rather than west end ( first wave full of art school types) they were football fanatics, working class and proud to be working class. kind of people who dont telling you theyll hit you, they just do it.
Went to see them on fri night in manchester, was impressed by the new singer, was his own man and not trying to copy jp. he kept giving me the mic during the songs ! loved it and rated it as one of the best gigs ive been to in 30 years (thats a suprise to me)
The night after they appeared on TOTP doing this song they played at The Harlsden Roxy in North London. An amazing show that had Girlschool and Patrick Fitzgerald as support.
Brilliant, that says it all, woos on top of the pops then?????
