  • ..some ladies (or at least their CO2-emitting boyfriends) might consider the implications of your conclusion ..inconvenient.

  • The precautionary principle has some very useful advantages. It means that, where research has found a plausible risk, before some some drug or anything else that could make a lot of money for someone can be produced, the person who produces it has to prove that the risk is not significant.

I personally think, and I think you'll agree, that there are many people who would gladly take steps toward making loads of money without properly considering whether those steps are a good idea or not.

  • Isn't this arguement known as Pascal's Wager, too?

  • You're better when you stick to history and military matters ;). Ignore the fear mongers, but listen to actual scientists. There is still room for uncertainty in this of course, but there is nothing counter intuitive about human-made carbon dioxide (and other gases) can affect the climate. This effect of certain gases has been known for a very long time.

  • Not related to this video, but now that I have the opportunity.

Can you make a video about why the romans switched their Gladii to the Spathas?

(Of course I can read a load of text, but that isn't entertaining)

  • You are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • Dihydrogen Monoxide is a deadly thing, when there's acute exposure to the lungs.

  • @TheKingdomofErnor They got loads of people to sign a petition in Stockholm to stop them putting it in public fountains.

  • @TheKingdomofErnor

You can also die from heavy doses in other parts of the body. Look up the news story on the "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" contest held a number of years ago in Sacramento, California. It was done as part of a radio program on 107.9 FM, 'The End'.

As for global warming, or climate change since the concept of an aggregate rise in temperature usually makes people respond with, "Lulz, it was snowing in [insert part of some country here]," drowning sucks: if true.

  • An even more insidious argument, and one that particularly affects professional scientists, is that the measures to prevent global warming are beneficial -- no, necessary! -- regardless of whether global warming is real or not.

With the what-have-you-got-against-clean-energy-and-pollution-control argument, you can be 100% right and perfectly honest, and still be the bad guy if you don't get with the winning team.

  • You're such an arse in all of your videos. I love it. I'd sleep with you ;)

  • If I was a lady I would sleep with you.

  • I love your videos.Just discovered them, and I am going through them 1 by 1, and enjoying them. I have the feeling that is so because you talk about stuff\you know really well. Not so much with this last video though.Sure thing, everyone s got an opinion, & we can agree to disagree.I have my reservations about the chart, & about precautionary principles too.Still, I subscribe to the theory that claims that massive carbon emissions are bad, and that we should get conscious about them, and soon.

  • CO2 is just the top of an inconceivable iceberg, and here we have a beautiful ''Ship' of Fools' :

    True & action = disaster

True & no action = disaster

    False & action = disaster

False & no action = disaster

    Indeterminable & action = disaster

Indeterminable & no action = disaster

This, as long as one does not wonder if he really loves Nature.

  • Hey, you better talk about women than about global warming, huh? Come on, don't be shy, I think it could be an interesting topic for us all. Please do not disappoint us.

  • I love the one where the guy gets people to sign a petition to ban Di-Hydro Monoxide (a potentially lethal substance that is prolific in the food-chain and atmosphere). As soon as they hear 'Monoxide' they panic and sign. Petitions to ban water should not be supported.

  • @wesmatron I was going to do one on that, and still might, even though I now know that others have had the same idea.

  • @wesmatron Classic. You could also say Hydrogen Hydroxide, hehe. (If you didn't know, water's molecular formula is not H2O, it is HOH.)

  • "Just pay me the money" doesnt it always come down to that?

Man made climate change is nothing more than the biggest con trick in human history.

  • @ajb7876 Wait till you find out how the banking system works.

  • The scientific community have consensus in that global warming is a reality.

A comparison of scientific studies showed ~6000 for and 3 against during apx 2 year period.

Those 3 used the same facts as basis for their studies but came to different conclusions.

One of them is an economist.

One is working with mining (although holds a degree).

Of course politics and argumentation in order to change peoples minds are not in the scope of science.

  • @peope1976 You do realize how much money these global warming people make right? Just like car salesmen get commission on every car they sell, the scientists get a big paycheck every time a rich idiot pays their global warming sponsor. Politicians pass laws that go directly against the common good for the same reason, they are getting paid to do so. Anyone can be persuaded to do what you ask if the price is right.

  • @peope1976 Of course the planet's warming up. We're finally far enough out of the last ice age that its getting back to normal. No, what we have now has not been normal for this planet for most of its existance.

  • You could counter with the same argument. If you're right and women sleep with you, they've slept with the saviour of fun, and guilt-free vacation, and taxpayers' money, and whatnot. If you're not - no big deal, nobody will even remember you in a year or two.

On the other hand, if they don't sleep with you, etc. etc...

Also, if you convince them you're good in bed, you have 2 BIG smileys in the "Action" row and NO smileys in "No action"! Can't get any better than that.

  • >... the terror of volcanoes, of global warming, of whatever it is, big sharks with teeth and little weevils that burrow into your brain ...

    Don't forget space hamsters!

  • @Intelus I've heard that they are even worse than the giant mutant star goats.

  • You don't really need a chart to come up with this sort of thing, just logic. It will work for some things, with evidence plainly in sight, or it will not, because logic can't be used to correctly judge it, and evidence is harder to find.

That's how I view it anyway.

  • The great thing about the zombie uprising chart is that there's a second big smilie at the action - true slot. :)

  • the problem given there isn't something like 2012, but rather, "how much did it take to make new york, new york..." and "is this preventable, what is the cost economically for us and politically even? might seem silly, but then look at the middle east and one 9/11, it dictated british, canadian and american policy for the last 10 years

instant stupidity and chaos just add people~

  • basically, the credible version of climate change, or one of the lighter ones, says that it will happen, and a few degrees difference will occur, and places will shift in climate, hotter and drier, by 1-3 degrees or something.... and so on but that the problem isn't 50 degrees colder or hotter, but the implications it has on the biological systems that exist in them, basically a small domino effect, also crops will change in location and so on

the nastier ones think in 300 years NY will drown

  • htt p://w ww.you tube.com /watch?v=TR qX3LhWqcM

fourth sympoisum on human evolution basically, mainly concerned about Australopithecus and differentiation between species and what goes where and so on... with some affirmations that "this sort of thing HAS happened in the past and repeatedly and sort of regularly, and that's why we're worried about it in the future" because for instance, the sahara was once a savannah and so on

  • I was wondering about the whole pascal's wager part of things in it, awesome to see you addressed it, woops :d

  • carbon dioxide is essential, all that bs about global warming is just ridiculous, more carbon dioxide, the trees absorb to grow, they output oxygen after consuming co2, back then it was beneficial, more greens more animals etc...whay were dinosaurs soo big? Oxygen, there was more air to breath, more carbon dioxide for greens to absorb, hence more food=bigger animals more air to breath etc...

  • I believe in in his follow-up video the guy you got this from talks for 30 seconds about how you couldn't do this with any theory, like, for example, one stating giant space hamsters will come and invade the earth and that we therefore should build giant mouse traps, but that because there is at least some level of science behind global warming, and therefore...

  • @resiak363 I've seen his follow-up, and may deal with it one day. Essentially his argument is "trust these organisations".

  • "Trust these organisations that make fortunes with global warming and carbon dioxides."

Personally I'd rate their agenda right next to middle age church donations and entry to heaven. Human effect in global weather has become a modern religion in the past twenty years.

  • A SOLAR-POWERED YACHT!

  • Trying to post longer than the box here allows! I'm torn - you're right, the chart gives no proof, and you're right, "ecologically friendly" businesses are a load of crap. But the science behind Anthropogenic Climate Change is quite real, quite solid, and we should be looking at it. Gigatonnes of carbon released into the atmosphere *does* have an effect. Still, good video, and I'm glad you're picking apart the fallacy you're showing! Scepticism FTW

  • I've also seen the critiques, and they tend to fall flat. Unless you believe in a "Big Science" conspiracy, climate change is real.

But we can't buy our way out of it, and it's crazy to think we could. And the chart you use makes it *very* easy to bully people intellectually without showing proof, of course!

  • I'm torn with this video! You're very correct in saying how ridiculous and unregulated the "carbon offset" and other "green" industries are. Usually companies just buy the rights to a little green leaf and hey presto they're "ecologically sensitive". You can't buy your way out of these sorts of things!

On the other hand, the consensus between environmental scientists is that anthropogenic climate change is real - I believe this as I've seen the data and the studies.

  • then he sade the plant teh trees thin at 03:13 , I got parallel thoghut to the catholic churche in the dark age O_O thats a bad thing to all how dont know whot hapend then the chuche did this 800 years ago

  • Personaly I dont care if there is global warming or not. I believe that the human society should make sure that whatever it produces has minimal impact on the rest of the world. I think that is a noble goal to strive for. But this is pretty much like Pascal's Wager. Better to believe than to risk hell.

  • global watrming/ general change the juries out

    man made oceanic acidification.. REAL,

and the precautionary principle is, admittedly not meant as such to be scientific, its meant to be a policy tool. to give time o get more research in and alsoto tell them hey, your stillnot totally sure, dont do anything until we are.

it can be and is being used as you describe however.

  • I used to be totally panicked by this stuff too until I actually looked at the numbers. I still think we can influence the climate, but only very slowly. I think this debate will still be going on next century, if you catch my drift.

  • Man Caused climate change

    Real

Man Caused Earth-Raping Carbon Dioxide acid rain tornado child rapist catastrophe

    Fake

  • man influence climate change,

    real

man is the sole cause of climate change.

    false

  • it's coolish here in summer, what about global cooling?

  • I was expecting something different from this video..

I was expecting you to make a chart about why women should sleep with you.. and the possible consequences if they didnt..

    I felt so let down.

  • Sorry about that. I'll have to make another video.

  • @lindybeige do it

  • i thought you were gonna go on about how sexy you are (no homo) lol

  • Those carbon offsets are the indulgences of our age.

    M.

  • haha! that made my day, however that is a good point...i'll have to look into it myself...

  • This is actually pretty true, people are running around in circles shouting "Global Warming" because some guy said "Hey, the temperature just went up, its YOUR fault, so feel bad and buy my eco friendly product!" To compare it to something, its like seeing the shadow of a kitten and thinking that shadow is of a lion or a puma

  • Nice presentation. Though I am asking myself what's wrong abt planting trees. Burning a tree emits just as much CO2 as it stored during it's life time, and would set free just the same amount in decomposing. Regardelss if you believe in climate change cause by human activity, the problem of peak oil DOES exist. Selling certificates makes it more feasible for companies to release CO2 and thus makes it more feasilble to save oil. Please tell me I am wrong. Cheers!

  • the problem is 'going green' is nothing more than a cheap marketing trick.

"buy our product of questionable results and save the earth"

this global warming crisis is gonna stick around and there's gonna be all sorts of effort put into perpetuating it. why? because a crisis sells. if you can convince someone that there is a need to buy something, you can sell them anything that an otherwise reasonable thinking person would never purchase.

here's to hoping the velociraptors don't kill us all

  • Your videos are great, and being british makes them even better.

  • LOL!!! This reminds me of Monty Python!! LOL!!! :))

  • you have amused me sir!

    good job.

  • I love the jumper.

  • Thanks. That's another reason women should sleep with me, but I let that speak for itself.

  • its true. a chart like this doesn't prove much and you could make one for just about anything...

"should i study this chapter for this test or should i not? whats the worst that could happen? i know! i'll make a chart and then i can decide!"

but what it DOES do, if you actually devote some time to watching different videos like this, it really does make you think about the arguments of both sides and decide which one you want to support.

getting the facts and figures is a different story.

  • What worries me most about this sort of thing is how both sides of the argument tends to go to extremes; it's either "global warming is real and we are destroying the planet and we're all going to die" or it's "global warming is bullshit and doesn't exist and the world has always had the same temperature and always will."

Only a very few people seem to go: "A lot of this is bullshit, but some of it sounds plausible, maybe there's some truth to both?"

I don't think a simple graph is enough.

  • Agreed. I am certainly not saying that climate does not vary. The chart (I mistakenly call it a graph) is very far from enough.

  • agreed so money grows on trees because money is made of paper and trees make paper so send me money!

  • Most money is made of linen and cotton. ;)

But yes, that is the logic they use. haha

  • Agreed on this video....

Its like I say for example.....

    the iraq war....

So true or not true >Iraqs want to kill us all

Action> Lets kill all iraqs....or not.....

and by the scare tactics and reasoning....

its better to attack them and kill them all

Because the 2 worse case scenarios are

"We are murderers" "We are dead"

(sarcasm coming up)"AND you don´t want to be dead! SO :P Its only reasonable if we go an slaughter a nation, because if we don´t D: They might kill us all D:"

  • I do not care of global warming is real or not. but I do not want crap in my nature. as with GMO and all that shit.

  • but your vid point out one thing I agree with very much. money in exchange for what they claim is better for nature is rubbish.

  • Accurate! Greetings from Poland!

  • While I do think that GW is something to take seriously, I also think carbon offsets are just a load of crap. That said, I have to tell you that were it possible, I would sleep with you. :) What can I say? You're both intelligent and attractive, and English accents are hot.

  • I really hope I am not the only one who got the blind-dyslexic joke. :D

  • Well done, very well done. Who needs supporting evidence to an argument when simple fear will suffice? What's the saying? "If you keep on saying something, eventually people will believe it."

  • Hahah, awesome. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for preserving our environments, but I'd really like an anti-avian flu mask with my carbon offsetting fee, thank you.

  • I'm working on getting my Master's in Neuroscience, and it really is scary how many scientists take global warming as a fact without even looking at the evidence. Strangely enough they seem to approach it as some sort of religion.... sort of makes you think that even the most rational minds has to have something to put their blind faith in?

    - I'm not commenting on the theory or evidence - just the way my fellow scientists approach the issue. Personally I think it's a way for them to feel good.

  • I shall be making a video that touches on this theme very soon.

  • What's so disturbing about risk analysis? Sure, it's presented in a simplified way in the video you criticize, but so is your video. No knowledge is 100% certain, so the question is how certain we should be before we start to act 'as if'? I'd rather put my trust in what is published in respected science magazines such as Nature and Science than in what oil company lobbyists and rightist political writers are saying about the probability of human-induced warming and the probable consequences.

  • Well, this particular video was opposing not the entirety of global warming theory, but the very flawed argument presented in another video. I'm going to do at least one video about global warming theory soon. personally, I find it very suspicious that none of these respected sources has come up with one shred of evidence linking carbon emissions with warming...

  • I think the massive body of evidence collected and peer reviewed in the IPCC counts.

  • Have you found any evidence presented in the IPCC report for the link? I haven't. Can you tell me which page it is on?

  • Try reading through the various reports on their website. The reason that the evidence they give is so highly regarded is because of the huge amount of data collected and processed, and then the huge numbers of specialist scientists who peer review it. Asking where the evidence is and then not looking seems a little silly.

  • Yes, this is the usual answer I get. People insist that it is there, and yet I cannot find it, and no one despite my now having asked hundreds of people over several years, has been able to point any out to me. If just one actually came up with a single reference to a single shred of evidence, the argument would be over, and yet none has. Odd, that.

  • You should stick to dancing Dude! Not even funny, let alone compelling or cogent and yes I did waste 4:57 minutes of my life hoping you would come through with something remotely intelligent. Well I'll go bac and look at your 5 beat swing clip to try and make up! That was good! And funny!

  • Glad you liked the dancing vid. This one did not have humour as its primary purpose.

  • as we speak there is a volcano erupting right beside me. i think someone kicked a rock that was previously holding back this lava flow. sure wish that guy had watched your video.now im gonna burn alive because of soil erosion, oh no, oh no. ahhhh this makes no sense, sorry bout that.

  • So, do you take time beforehand to write this stuff, or is most of it just completely impromptu?

  • I think my laziness shows. No, I just turned the camera on and started ranting. This largely explains the large number of times I say 'er'. It would take me ages to learn a five minute speech. Had I carefully scripted it, I like to imagine that it would be less 'stuff'-like. My apologies.

  • No need to apologize, it was actually pretty good.

  • Brilliant

  • Halfway through the video i was thinking "Yeah, next you're gonna say plant more trees, right?", and was amused when it did happen. XD

So, it's been a month since your last response... any luck?

  • Curiously, I cannot with candour report the marked increase in sexual activity for which I hoped.

  • dude now you are just getting grazy

    did this work xD

  • I live in hope that many women will sleep with me as a direct consequence of this video, but it is very difficult to prove cause and effect.

  • yeah i guess its is difficult indead

but if it works give me a call mate ill will make my own video xD

  • What a prick. There is free thinking carried out by smart people, and there is reactionary thinking by people who wish they were smart. This man is not of the smart type.

  • Interesting. I wonder why you consider yourself able to tell the difference. So people who blindly agree with all the eco-stuff are "free-thinking"? People who question it, preferring to see some evidence are "pricks"? Is that the only test?

  • Well I make the decision based not so much on the aim of the argument as on the method and approach of the argument.

Anyone who is not even prepared to take the question of global warming seriously is a prick (my personal definition).

You will also perhaps see that acceptance and rejection of GW are not symmetrical w.r.t the risk posed to our planet.

And beside the evidence for GW, it is clear humanity is screwing up the world. Anything that puts the breaks on the rate of destruction is good.

  • Do I ever say that I do not take the threat of GW seriously? I don't think so. What about the other risks? The coming ice age? Remember acid rain? Possibly we could save the planet by massively increasing our output of CO2 into the atmosphere. The Chinese are doing their bit. Are you?

Surely the first thing to do is find out the facts, then, armed with the facts, we can fly off the handle and get self-righteous.

  • This has nothing whatsoever to do with being self-righteous. I guess that is what was so disconcerting about your video. It betrays a cynicism of the worst kind, assuming everything is about feeling superior to others and making money off the gullible. Maybe you should check your motives - you may just be projecting.

About facts. There is no certainty about climate change and projection, so what you are saying is you will never do anything. One could dispute the facts until the end.

  • Thank gods!

I was getting seriously concerned while watching that previous video. As the timer ran on and on towards the end I became increasingly frantic, thinking that you weren't going to change tack.

Please don't scare me like that!

  • Life in fear, buy things!

Possible disaster ahead, time to stock up on generators and duct tape!
