The AK-47 has developed the reputation of "the bad guy gun". So many drug cartels, gangs, and terrorists use the firearm or a version of it. Why do they use it? You rarely have to clean it and it will work in almost any enviroment on the planet. That is the gun every average joe should have after a Ruger .22 because you cannot go wrong with it. You can work 12 hour shifts every day and when you go home you know the gun will work as soon as you kick the bolt.

@allhunting I can guarantee your 30-06 is more accurate as well, and better for the majority of terrain in America. AK47 is a great gun for the jungle where you need to send a LOT of shots through heavy foliage, but not so great in a wide open environment where long precise shots may be required and you may spend a lot of time prone (can't lay down very low and shoot an AK with a 30 round mag).

In my limited experience of life, I tend to believe that the people that are most against guns of all kinds, would be the first to start squealing for someone to save them if they were attacked and wish anyone was there to protect them (with a big gun). The old expression is still true, "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". The AK47 has a reputation and is often used to scare people. Wow...she is just stupid, what makes an ak-47 so dangerous? the fact that the towel heads use those type of rifles to kill people. doesn't mean they are anymore dangerous than any other weapon. If she saw a .308 bolt action rifle with a wood stock nothing to special looking she wouldn't think its as dangerous as an ak-47 but the .308 could kill someone at a much longer range than an ak-47 so someone with that rifle could just pick off civilians at a long range.

Not to mention, the rifles for the latter hunting rounds can be bought off the shelf, no waiting period. Heck, in the right hands, a Model 100 Winchester lever action would likely do more damage in a crowd than an AK-47. The lack of understanding (or ignorance of reality) is dumbfounding.

AK 47 = Assault rifle (Not technically because not full auto, but close) = A rifle with multiple shot capability without reloading which can do some damage = Great protection for anyone.
Is it better knowing you have means to defend your home with an AK or does it feel better to have the smallest gun possible not knowing if it would stop an attack so that you can say I dont own a AK.

@allhunting I can guarantee your 30-06 is more accurate as well, and better for the majority of terrain in America. AK47 is a great gun for the jungle where you need to send a LOT of shots through heavy foliage, but not so great in a wide open environment where long precise shots may be required and you may spend a lot of time prone (can't lay down very low and shoot an AK with a 30 round mag).
