@ozimix thanks for being one of many Medwives who work in a Hospital Setting, to offer quality prenatal care and quality health care for the Mother and Child who are considered to be high risk pregnancies and high risk births.
Low risk pregnancies that remain Low risk births, result in successful home births under the care of a Midwife-at home.
people like me who have done lots of research, tried both options (one hospital and one home) and come to an intelligent conclusion.
I would be more inclined to say that closed minded people who are not willing to listen to other opinions or even the reaserch and who want to take away personal freedoms shoudl be stopped.
What is the point of demanding the right to have home births?? What's wrong with giving birth in hospital?? Are hospitals not safe anymore? This looks like another feminist rant "standing up for women's rights" to me.
Ever had a hospital birth CanberraUser? I've had two... I've also got two horrific scars to show you how safe they are. Let me tell you having the wadding left by your specialist up your vagina only to find it a week later is not nice, and no it's not safe. There is so much wrong with hospital births but I won't bother trying to educate you. You go and have a nice hospital birth... and see how you like it.
You're right - -this is a fight for womens RIGHTS to choose where they have their babies. No one there is having a go at hospital births. They just want the right to choose home or hospital. I'm far from a feminist but I believe in having a choice about my own health care - don't you?
To me, the problem with a hospital birth is that a hospital and its protocols nearly cost my son his life. I want the choice to birth where I want, I want my daughter to have the right to choose
Yes exactly the registry required insurance and it was virtually impossible to get. It is possible to get insurance for anything if you are willing to pay premiums you simply have to contract directly with a willing insurance company however the premiums may be enormous.
Just because an insurance product isn't available retail doesn't mean it can't be contracted.
Hell I'd be willing to start up and insurance company for home birth midwives with a $1 million per year base premium per customer.
From my understanding there will be no federal funding for midwife's indemnity insurance. They must take out their own out of pocket private insurance which is fair enough.
Let them do what they want its a free country, and the private market will dictate just how risky it is with their premiums.
Private midwives ahve not been able to get indemnity uinsurane since 2001, nothing to do with the risk associated, purely becasue there are only about 200 of them.

I'm a midwife, & a mother of 3...all hospital births mind you, & all I want to know is who is considering the rights of the unborn child here?
Surely the child deserves the best of care, close at hand, in case there are unforseen problems!!
For me, the safety of my child would always be the most important thing, not the "experience" of the birth....

No. There is simply an exception for midwives to legally practice un-insured.
The problem was some legislation that forced them to get insurance yet it its insanely expensive so most of them couldn't afford it.
Now they can take all of the risk onto themselves if they wish or pay the high premiums.

affording the insurance is not the issue, no insurance company even offers it!
there is no longer going to be a way for them to practice un-insured, if they do and are found out, they will be hit with a $30,000 fine
