  • This debate will go on and on because like it or not we are judged by the way we wear our hair. The only way we can side step this issue is to build our self esteem/ self worth so that we can wear our hair the way that we are happy with. Relaxed or natural if you are truly happy the way you are, then carry on. Personally I am against relaxers due to the damaging effect it can have on hair (been there, done that) and feel a lot more free and economically 'well off' being natural.

  • ...i have natural hair but that's my choice. if you want a chemical relaxer, do you. That's your choice. If a man doesn't want me because of my hair then it's his loss. I'm not losing sleep over it, chile.

  • OMG music is too loud and distracting o_O

  • hahahaha NATURAL's always gonna be better than a perm. people with natural hair always have longer and healthier hair then a permed head..and what you guys are saying is SO TRUE, we have bigger things to worry about then our hair..wtf...it really isn't that big of a deal, take care of it and have fun with it...Now go workout or Read a Book..

  • I say let them burn (literally). this is a wasted argument. let them keep posioning their scalp. it lets us id the strong from the weak. funny i have never seen a black women over 40 with relaxed hair past her shoulders, but i know many black women over 40 with dread all down their back, even some who touch the ground. I wonder why??

  • This 5 min discussion seems very one-sided...there are plenty of other things that are damaging to the hair besides chemical treatments...I am not saying that chemical treatments are not one of the worst but micro braids like one of the panel speakers had actually pulls your hair out from the root and sometimes stripping the hair out at the root can damage the hair gland and hair will not growth as it once did in that area. But in all hair is dead once it leaves the scalp.

  • it's just hair!

  • 2:45 Destroy yourself? Gimme a break? I just relaxed my hair after having it natural for 14 months and I was immediately made to look like I failed. Sometimes I feel like natural girls want to look down on relaxed girls. It's MY choice what I want to do with MY hair.

The video clip looked extremely one-sided.

  • Damn! Wish i'd been able to have gone to this event. I thought they forgot about us in cold England :( Very interesting, Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow! It's just hair, this is stupid. I choose to be natural because Its easyer in my oppinion and I think natural hair suites me. Who really gives a shit wether your natural or not.

  • @blynbb This clip was taken from an event i filmed in London call Adornment, its organised once a year for the black African Community in England to showcase African products, Art fashion, there are workshops on health, natural beauty and different therapies. there is as a big emphasis on healthy eating. So the clip is just a small part of a discussion, if you listen carefully you would see it was edited to give a balanced view

  • @justice4all I didn't hear a balanced view. It was very one sided.

  • @shlinda1 If you listen to the Guy he is supporting black women in doing whatever to their hair and the women on the panel with the cane row style was against the women even though she was natural, The discussion in it raw state was for natural hair, but the discussion was not all about that topic, I took out 5 min from a 30min discussion, now the heading I gave it is nothing to do with the topic on the day. I used the heading to get people to listen. Hope you get what I am saying peace.

  • @blynbb At the end of the day we're talking health people. The chemicals cause damage! It absorbs into the body! These are the facts! Anyone causing controversy is doing so because they have a agenda. Every person who says theyre black on here is not black. Some of these comments even come from people who sell perms and relaxers, make theyre living off it. Theyre in fear of loosing money. THE FACT IS THE CHEMICALS ARE HARMFUL TO YOUR BODY!!

  • @blynbb Everytime I see a sister with natural hair I compliment her on how nice her hair looks. I feel that if all black men who admire sisters with natural hair would do this one thing it would eliminate the thought that men may be ignoring them because of their natural hair. In most cases that is a assumption not fact. The day WILL come when the majority of our sisters will be natural the website ebonyheart2heart in their hair section lists all the chemicals and side effects! A MUST SEE!

  • I'm going to add to all this craziness: Relaxers CAN ( it makes a huge difference!) cause cancer. To automatically say that it going to is not a true statement. Personally, I have never meet anyone who had cancer from relaxers. I have meet people who went ball from it. And, that what I meant a year ago w/ my comment. Okay! -Peace, last time I'm ever going to be on this Natural Hair Nazi video again. This video is a discouragement to go natural (in my opinion)- Deuces!

  • CHRIS ROCK should have watched this before he made such an incomplete film...I mean after he scared everyone with the truth then where were the alternative natural hairstyles for the woman who wanted to make a change

  • @TawaretKaUsert I agree with you! The film really did not give a good perspective on natural hair. An extreme narrow view. It was very disappointing. Thanks for your comment!

  • Marriage and get a trusted women Online "busizz4me.info"

  • i think the main thing is what is you motive for perming, weaving and all that? whatever we do we must question our motives. and you would rather burn you scalp and have scalp bumps in you hair? do what you e want but i was bald headed from perms. shoot i had to give up the creamy crack even though i didnt want to. glad i did though

  • black men dont want natural hair women... there is a natural hatred i see them exhibit

  • You can have straight hair afro or curly when youre natural. More options

  • Hate to said it most black woman are just fuck in the head and they choose to be that way. Go and rent the movie good hair with chris rock

  • I think there should be some relaxed people in that conference too. That way, they can argue their reasons for being natural. It makes no sense if a whole room of naturals are arguing about relaxed hair.

  • is this really a press conference about hair

  • People blow things out of proportion. Yeah, I use my straightening irons and sometimes wear clip in hair extensions but I'm not 'ashamed' of my black half. Most of the white girls I know do the same to their hair, are they 'ashamed' too?

  • I have been reading many of comments, and yes I agree there are other issues in the world that we should discuss. However having a discussion/debate over hair should not be minimized. Like the battle with light-skinned vs. dark-skinned black people, in society, a certain look is preferred. In ignoring what others have stated as "ugly", we will continue to view it as such. So it is important to have different discussion on this topic which will (hopefully) help enlighten others.

  • ppl shouldnt worry, because those who choose to use chemical realxers will start the process of loosing their hair at around age 40-45 years and it won't ever grow back (side effects), while those who keep it natrual and care for theirs will still have thick full lucious hair on their head and dont have to worry about hair loss......it's a choice at the end of the day....clearly one is better than the other but oh well, let ppl do what they want, everything has a consequsnce, good and bad.

  • @Venusstar22 Excellent point. It's all about choices.

  • it's a choice

  • I'm sorry but this is just disgusting to me.......people sitting around having an meeting about hair when there are MORE VITAL issues for the black community to face.

  • @myronmlawing co-sign

  • @myronmlawing its about time black ppl sit down to talk about it. for too long time talking about hair in the black community has always been a touchy topic. i think its at least another health talk that is much over do.

  • I had been getting relaxers since i was about 10 or 11. I realized that the realxers werent really doing anything for my hair, so since November of last year, I have been "natural". I can tell that my hair is much healthier and possibly even thicker. One problem I have is that I dont have any length. Can someone tell me what I may be doing wrong? Maybe I just have to wait?

  • Ladies over in the UK sound like they have it togeher..

  • i'm not for a perm beause it can really damage your hair and if you want it straight hot comb it or flat iron it it's less damaged that way. i have never permed my hair and my hair is long and healthy and beautiful.

  • ...and that natural hair isn't so I continued to go along with it. Now that I have done research about the chemicals that I was using and the research that I've done on natural hair and how to care for it I can honestly say that I am upset and I will probably always be upset about this. I don't mind people who have strait hair how ever I do hate to see kids under the age of 12 with relaxed hair because they most likely have not been given a choice nor any information about what they are doing.

  • @jasrinrin I agree with you 100%. I am 27 now and I first got a relaxer when I was about 7 or 8....thats 20 years of relaxers. I never had the choice of keeping my hair natural. In fact I remember my mom using a pressing comb on my hair and it was healthier than with the relaxer. I have decided to go back to my natural hair...I just dont know where to begin. I think natural hair is beautiful.

  • I am 18 years old and I've made the decision to go natural a few months ago. I've cut off all my relaxed hair and I'm happy with my choice how ever I am.. very hurt that I was not given the choice as to whether or not I wanted a relaxer in the first place. My grandmother made that choice for me when I was very young. I've always hated the process of getting my hair treated with chemicals and heat but I wanted to be cute and I was taught that strait hair is beautiful hair...

  • My goodness, is it that serious to have a meeting about Natural and Chemical hair? Do what you what with it and be done.

  • I think people should strive to be healthy.

Being to ruff w/ natural hair, harsh chemicals, hair styles that pull tightly on the hair roots, the constant straightening of the hair b/c of self-hate and not because you simply just want it straight, are all unhealthy.

We put our selves into cultural slavery by generalizing that all non-natural hair is the result of self-hate.

A white woman with curly hair can say she prefers her hair straight and not be reprimanded by her race.

    Why is that?

  • Its like a witch hunt with black people. Black women can't do anything with their hair without first making sure its alright with other black people. What happened to personal freedom?

White people have choice of hair color, texture and length w/o their decision turning into a town hall meeting.

I don't desire blond hair but the fact that I can't go blond isn't b/c its not my natural hair color its b/c black ppl have a problem with it. Plenty of white women dye their hair, but I'm enslaved.

  • some guys who have comented act like they dont know the history behind this. yes we all use chemicals whether it be conditioner, anti bacteria skin stuff and bla bla bla, however, this perming hair thing originated from black women being told that there hair was nappy, frizzy, untamable and all those bad stuff, just like they told black women that their behinds were too fat, and thier lips were to big. black women relaxed to assimilate and some still do now.

  • cont.. i think the main aim of the people on this vid was to help blacks heal from the bashing that they received and imparted on eachover over the few decades after slavery. its simple as that. relaxed girls.. stop getting so defensive, at the end of the day, we do what we what to our hair and u suffer the concequences ( some good, some bad )

  • @kikiCARIBBEANGirl I hear you. But in the end it is a personal choice. I think if you have natural hair and you're happy with your choice you can accept another grown woman's choice not to be natural if she doesnt want to. I don't understand the need to tell someone not to use a product to style her hair because you dont use it. To use scare tactics is almost desparate at this point. Enjoy your hair style and let other women enjoy theirs.

  • those who straighten their hair are STILL brain washed whether dey want to admit it or not. Dey help participate in a form of SELF HATE u can deny it all u want but who are TRULY tryin 2 convince?its like ppl who bleach their skin but keep tryin 2 convince ppl their proud of being black...YEAH RIGHT

  • Just rock your locks and if someone likes it they'll want to emulate it. Thats the best way to get someone to go natural. Not by putting them down and not by trying to scare them into it. What's the big push to get everyone to go natural for anyway? I'm natural, but I dont feel everyone else has to be. Let them decide on their own what they want to do with their hair. These are grown women...grown black women at that! And you and I both know we dont take kindly to people telling us what to do.

  • @Netertaat Are white people who tan and use self-tanners trying to be black? Do they "self-hate"? Maybe a small percent of blks hate their ethnicity, but over 95 percent love being blk and would not change that (from a recent survey). Hair is just cosmetic for most people. I got a bush on my head that I struggle to keep tamed--a relaxer might make life easier, but I don't like the stuff, but I just might tolerate it again, lol.

  • @OldskolFan so true. I get that a lot of people do hate their kinky textured hair but for the most part its just ease not self-hatred. The only thing some people truly have an issue with is skin color but majority wise, black people aren't "trying to be white" or anything of the sort. Everyone does their hair the way the want for their own reasons. personally, i went natural because as a college student i couldnt afford relaxers and salon trips so i do everything at home. to each his own

  • they have no life

  • I have also never seen a black woman with scalp cancer....

  • @ KruBahbie, I agree with you on the hair Nazis! I think some of them are natural out of peer pressure and THEY still dont like their hair texture and so they lash out at women who havent subcumbed to the pressure to stop relaxing. That's why you see them using scare tactics and tossing around the phrase "self-hate". It's really peer pressure and I feel sorry for those who fall under the pressure and chop off all their long hair because it's relaxed, especially if deep down they didn't want to.

  • I have natural hair but these Nappy Nazis are going to far...let wome do their hair how they want...its not even that serious. Not every woman who straightners hates herself or has an inferiority complex...not every Asain girl who wears eye makeup hates being Asain...not every person who is with someone of another race hates their own....These women need to realx.

  • If we put as much focus on eating healthy and exercising as we do our hair, we as Black people would be much healthier.

  • @relly1983 I agree...but I think if you go natural for the right reasons, it leads to a better lifestyle overall. Most people I know who went natural started off just wanting healthier hair. When you start using shea butter and jojoba oil for your hair, it leads to using healthier stuff for skin, and overall it just snowballs...healthy hair, skin, start exercising, eating right, etc. I also know natural girls who overall respect themselves more sexually to do high risk behavior.

  • @relly1983 funny you should say that, because the first women who spoke specialises in healthy living . Her workshops were based on alternative medicines and nutruition, Its so easy to make comments without knowing the full facts we all do it including myself. I hope this will give you some context to the clip. The film is only 5min of a all day event which covered many areas of African culture fashion and health. We here in Britain was blessed to have this event for about 4 years.

  • its not just about hair ....listen

  • I think its ironic that we focus so much attention on our hair yet obesity, cancer, AIDS, and other health issues r more of a threat than permed hair.

  • we are on the SAME page!! lol

  • @annettemint but have you ever stopped to thik about whether there is a chance even a minimal one of relaxers causing cancer! there are no tests that have been done so we dont know! we just dont know. and are we really willing to take that chance

  • @mimi42428 I know that there are carcinogens in just about everything. My point for my comment is that I see so many sistahs who are so concerned about being natural yet they are 50 pounds overweight. If you are going to lead a healthy lifestyle, you should not only worry about what you put on your hair but also in your mouth. We are dying at an alarming rate from diseases linked to being overweight /eating unhealthy. By the way I'm a natural. : )

  • @annettemint i totally agree with you. my health is such a priority and always has been to me.i decided to go natural and my eating habits havent changed. i've always been a healthy eaten as some may call it. to me healthy food have always tasted better and is what i crave to eat. some people call me weird but heh thats me lol.

  • @annettemint eating right and living right. you are so right that what is the point with going natural and talking about hair health when whats going in your mouth is totally bad for you.going natural can be a start of someone's healthy lifestyle in whole but i do agree with you and some/certain natural sista who go natural and preach about natural hair yet their helth is just NONE EXISTENT AND VERY UNHEALTHY

  • @annettemint Going natural is a stepping stone in becoming a healthier individual. More women are seeing now that since their going natural they should take care of the bodies more. Fat doesn't fall off in one night or when they cut the relaxer out They also are figuring out when they take care of their body their making their hair stronger and grow faster So going natural is a great incentive to keep your body healthy as well They were big when they were relaxed how come you don't attack those?

  • @sweetine777 I'm not sure if I follow your comment but I agree. I'm actually natural and have posted several comments on this video. However my point is, obesity and cancer are major health issues in the African American community. If a sistah wants to go natural GREAT but she should probably put down the burger and the shake too. I agree that we should be focused on living an overall healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally. Peace.

  • @annettemint i know u wrote a while back but im going to comment anyways. refraining from permed hair is part of being healthy and chemicals on one's hair does cause cancers and hair loss and other health problems. just as chemicals on the food we put in our bodies does. it's the same with deodorant which is also a chemical applied on our bodies that is full of aluminum and other dangerous chemicals, and it's causing health problems as well. taking care of the body includes all of the body.

  • @00kaza00 Hi. I know the harmful effects of permed hair, which is why I'm natural. : ) There are plenty of women though who go natural yet still live an unhealthy lifestyle. Fact is, heart disease and AIDS are still wiping out our young women. So I hope that when these sistahs go natural, they consider an overall healthy lifestyle and not just focus on their hair. Take Care. : )

  • @annettemint The event covered fashion, Art and Healthy living , The clip is just 5min of a all day event. The first women to speak on the panel specialises in Nutrition and she done workshop throughout the day.

  • @justice4all Thank for your info but the point of my comment was to really encourage sistahs to get their priorities together. There were a lot of negative comments below. Going natural is the beginning for some of us however its counterproductive if you still have an unhealthy lifestyle. Heart disease will kill you faster than the creamy crack so let's focus on being healthy overall. By the way, I am a natural.: )

  • I thought flat ironing the new hair wasn't good for it? I prolly wont try to go natural for a while just because i know its a commitment & as of right now i know i won't stick to it. I'm too used to throwin my hair up & just goin, i've never been good at takin the time to do my hair so i like to watch videos of girls who have already done the transition for now & just wait until i KNOW i can commit

  • @ShesCrazyBeautiful, I dont think anyone should feel pressured into going natural. If you are thinking of going natural because people are putting you down, saying you hate yourself & you are using poison, please question their motives. It is not coming from a place of love. Peer pressure is not love. If you want to be natural, let it be your choice. I see nothing wrong with relaxing your hair if thats whats working for your right now. When it stops working for you, then seek out alternatives.

  • @WhereYaBoss Thank you. Let me say i love both. I started thinkin about going natural but hadn't known anyone personally that went through the transition process so i was just lookin at some women on YouTube to get an idea of what i may have ahead of me if i decide to transition but i got on here & noticed so many girls talkin down about women with relaxers & how we self hate & it just disgusts me cause it seems like we always have to find something to tear down a fellow african american women

  • @shescrazybeautiful, It takes the same amount of energy to same something positive as it does to say something negative. And as I mentioned to Netertaat, if you want to see more women wear natural hair rock yours and if people like it they will try to emulate as they do with any other hairstyle. I personally think if a sister has long healthy-looking relaxed hair it'sobviously working for her and she shouldnt change it unless SHE wants to.

  • its just hair... who cares wat u do wit it...the beauty is in how versatile hair is... u can wear it natural OR relaxed an at any time u can change it....this whole gathering to discuss it was a waste of time

  • i think that's such a good point. I think the most important thing is taking care of it. I didn't even know they had things like this until i started gettin on youtube, none of the ppl i know talk about it

  • I've been natural for two years and would be lying if I said that hair whether permed or natural is'nt a big deal. It's a form of self expression so for one to expect not to be judged by the way they wear their hair would be foolish. I don't agree with those that say that people that get perms hate themselves but I do believe that those that get perms aren't comfortable with the hair god gave them. This might not apply to all but I do believe it applies to most. I know this from experience!

  • Be careful when it comes to the issue of hair and the term "self hate" Im 22 years old and I got my first perm when I was 18 and even then I wore braids in my hair inbetween touch ups to protect it. I decided to go natural because it was costing too much money. My natural hair was hard to manage which was one reasons I permed it. It was not because I hated who I was, or any desire to be white. Color and hair does not define me. God defines me and I learned to embrace what he has given me.

  • I agree with you. Relaxers were originally created for the exact reason you pointed out, to be able to manage our hair a little better. I love natural hair & i think its absolutely beautiful when taken care of right, but i'm too scared to cut all of it off & start over. Relaxers are good too, but i don't bombard my hair with a lot of heat or damaging chemicals so a relaxer is about the most "damaging" thing i put in my hair ever 6-8 wks, maybe longer.

  • @ShesCrazyBeautiful relaxers were created so African American people could blend in more and be called civil by the Caucasian Americans. It was first discovered because the slave owners who wanted to punish their slaves would dip the heads of their slaves into the sodium hydroxide which is the main ingredient in relaxers. It would burn their heads like it does if you leave it on too long. But someone thought it was smart to use it in hair products to make the hair straight.

  • Comment removed

  • i agree with u also....thats why people get it to make their hair more manageable and for the style as well...regardless of what slave owners used it for we took it and found a way to help it benefit us...

  • Comment removed

  • about 8 ns ago i made the choice to sto breaking my hair by perming it and i love it my natural hair is (i dont mean to brag) but beautiful its strong it smells good this was the best choice i made but it is a choice if black women want to continue to perm their hair or lace front it or whatever it will eventually fall out and you WILL become bald when i permed, my hair never grew. it wasnt that in never grew, it was breaking lets love what we have

  • Why do we feel the need to change what naturally comes out of our head? I don't understand this and I never will. To each it's own, but I personally love the hair God gave me and love my natural beauty. I don't have a need to alter my beautiful hair.

  • Not sure if you are saying ur in agreement

  • not offended at all im glad you have a stand on what you believe i think your feelings were hurt due to someone not agreeing with you you just stated what i said in my first comment but god bless

  • i watched plenty of videos on this issue this is the first one i decided to comment on and if you have an issue then have that discussion with yourself all it is is passing judgement on one another maybe you failed to realize being a black woman myself you get pulled left and right bout this issue and its really pointless do what you love and love doing it find what works and stick to it and if you really sit their and have issues with your image you have a problem amongist yourself sweetie

  • don't get me wrong , im fine with my image. I m a proud black man who wants to see all black people move toward unity wholeness. It ok to judge we all make judgement everyday, the word has so much meaning accordding to the context. i could say to my wife honey i think thatdoes n't lok good on you, that my judgment, she does the same to me all the time and we listen to each other. if she want to continue and where the item thats up to her, but cause i care i made the comment. that all im doing.

  • this is a waste of time why does it matter if one wants to have their natural hair or a relaxer since when did this becomes anyone's biz other then the person the hair belongs to? if ppl put in the effort they du with natural hair with relaxed hair their hair WOULDN't be damage and a lot of natural sister's dye their hair and thats not your NATURAL hair color beauty starts from within until you master that your ugly anyways either way be natural or relaxed doesnt matter its your choice

  • interesting, you made a contribution even though you said it was a waste of time, i think nothing is to small to discuss, yes beauty does begin in the inside , one of the sister touched on that indirectly guessed you missed that. I believe we should discuss issues if we really love each other, no one can tell me that we as black people don;t have issues when it comes to our image i and how we carry ourselves in fact this negatibve image thing effect all ethnic groups in different ways.

  • We have enough chemical in our food , pollution in our air, so why add more chemicals willingly, why not try and reduce rather than add , black women are beautiful just the way they are, its all about getting back to the right mindset , black men need to tell their women that. I m from uk , i posted this clip, One thing i know is you African american can't afford to play with your health cause your health stats are so bad compared to the wider population and us uk black have similar problems.

  • It is deep Justic4all how defensive those who choose to perm and denaturize (perm) there hair always seem to get a bit defensive oppose to dealing with facts a hand. My hair is natural yet from time to time I will where a wig or a weave because I don't want the chems. Prissharpe is right the wont deal with the why. We know why I know why I do what i do. Freedom to do it is a cop out ... and are your really "Free?" ,,,,Mmmm

  • we are all missing the main point of the chemically straightened or natural hair debate. people who chemically straighten need to examine and question for themselves WHY we as a people began to straighten our hair in the first place. Although many of us experience damage, thinning and burning from relaxers, we continue. We need to examine why we don't find our natural hair texture as beautiful as long silky straight. Its not just a style, its a mindset. Once we see that, maybe we can change.

  • who other ethnic gruop uses the term natural hair, yes it is a issue, plus what example are you setting by using filthy language. I can't believe a women cud be speaking like that. This discussion was a balanced one and it showed both sides. plus the discussion or event was nt all about hair. The Tyra banks show on hair proves that this is a issue and the new chris rock film inspried by his daughter, when she asked him why she has nt got good hair, thats a issue right there

  • I want to say first sorry for my lanuage it was not nessary. I don't want you to think I am some fool because i am not. I just had it with this subject. I had a big debate about this with someone and it got out of control. I think it is wonderful that black women wear natural hair it is the realest thing you can do but why is it such a big deal that's all I was saying.

  • i wonder where this discussion took place - if it was in London i would have liked to come along.

  • The discussion was part of a workshop taken place at the Adornment show. I remember being at the show but didn't attend this particular talk. there lots of different things happening on the day. The show was held at the Kensington Town Hall.

  • ... Im too light to be Black, to dark to be White. My hair is too wavy to be kinky and too curly to be acceptable. ... But I love myself and say 'eff the system. Live life and be merry. To each their own.

  • thats stupid what about the air we breathe food we eat get a grip people and lets feed the hungry .help one another, i love my haie its relaxed and thick always has been

  • Personally I love my hair, I mean I got a relaxer, and I wish I had my regular hair because through getting a relaxer I honestly saw the beauty. I guess though that I am that kinda person that's into holistic health and stuff like that, cause I am. I mean I can't stand my relaxer, and I think my hair is reverting, thank the Lord. No offense to anybody, but I love my hair.

  • i love my hair also and i have a relaxer do what works for you

  • sis ,my intention was nt to offend you, here in the uk , a lot of my family wear their hair relaxed, they know what i believe, they love me and i love them. And don't preach to them everytime i see them. i m sorry you may be having a hard time with ppls coments, i guess like all ppls we as black are finding oursleves and that may hurt sometimes to get there. its through a lot of talking we now have a black president in America. so peace to you sis

  • im an African American and i tlk to this black woman from England a few years ago. she said she was very shocked to see the high degree of women with their relaxed here.

she told me it was more common for blk women in her country wore their hair natural, braids or dreads.

she also said, blk ppl are more in touch with their African heritage in general.

  • you right to a certain degree, black women of African caribbean background do where there here in braids more but i think its usually when they are younger there is increasing amount of black women wearing locks here in England and in the Caribbean outside of Jamaica the wearing of lock has had a massive increase. We have less issues with that style here, but there is a definite increase in women wearing weaves, in England too

  • What shocks me most is the stigma that is attached to having natural hair in the US. That's unheard of in England. You will find some women here with certain hang ups but i don't think to the degree you find in the States.

  • sounds like a bunch of hypocrites God did not make us with earring holes in our ears either so i guess we are all in the same boat hair is hair it is a personal choice no one has the right to impose their views on anyone else come on ppl there are bigger issuses to discuss in our community than hair for goodness sake

  • My goodness is it really that serious lol, natural or relaxed hair is beautiful. And there are plenty of people with gorgeous, long relaxed hair. I prefer my hair natural but hey there is nothing wrong with relaxed hair either.

  • God did not adorn us with jewerly, makeup, french braids, twists, or locs either but we do so because we inhance/change our nature. Some women have facial hair and acne--should we imbrace that because it is God given? I hate chemicals too but they are in everything from conditioners to the food we eat. This debate is not about that but rather about ethnic identity. Natural is beautiful but so is relaxers, weaves, braids, etc....

  • braids , locks, eye make up, conditions , skin moisterizers cant increase the chance of cancer, but relaxers can. conditioners, skin moisterizers dont cause ur skin to burn off, nor does it DAMAGE ur skin cells, but relaxers can. there is a difference between a girl wearing a push up bra to make her boobs appear bigger and one who does breasts implants,

  • cont....there is a difference between braiding ur hair and totally mutilating the gentically ordained protein structure of ur hair (or just any part of u ). theres a difference between enhancing what u already have and completely altering what god gave u . its like saying God made a mistake when he made u that certain way, or God didnot do good enough when he created u. think alittle deeper about this babe. (my opinion, not law) one love from the caribbean

  • @kikiCARIBBEANGirl Well I won't go into a creationists and environmental adaptation debate concerning the reasons why we have such physical features... The bottom line is, nappy hair is the best defense against the ravaging African sun--it block the sun's ray, kinda like natural shade. So does melanin.

  • @kikiCARIBBEANGirl Cold caves and snowy mountains had no need for pigment or thick hair. We are still adapting and have advanced technologically therefore we can use sunscreens, add self tanners, or even change our hair texture.

  • @OldskolFan lol, love your point. well i like how open ur mind is. i could have used what u said to prove my point too. and let me show u how babes lol " since the light and heat radiation from the sun is getting worse, black women should go natural , maybe white, asian and all those in between should get curly perms so that they will have a greater defense against the ravaging sun."

  • @OldskolFan cont.. how ever its the other way arround, almost every one want to go straight. thus proves what we all know, its a beauty thing, its not about adapting to natural environmental changes :) kiss kiss. u can debate, i like that lol.

  • @kikiCARIBBEANGirl Bottom line: most blk women straighten because they want manageable hair that they can style--not because of self-hatred and not loving their natural hair... That "slave mentality" goes both ways. But one side is not looking inward to see why they have resentments, primarily towards other blks...

  • @OldskolFan African people are the oldest people on the planet. We did'nt start hating ourselves until full contact with the white man and western Asian. Now today we change our looks to look like our enemies and oppressors at any cost which includes killing ourselves. Our consciouness is one of madness and destruction. Our natural hair along with weaves and wigs was good enough for our ancesters in the past 100,000 and back. Why isn't it good today?

  • @OldskolFan It isn't good enough because we think we need approval and acceptance from our enemies and oppressors who have been on this planet less than 8000 yrs. We been on the planet over a million!

  • This video is embarrassing.

  • Thanx for posting this. Where are the ppl from?

  • thanx for your comment, i am from the uk, the video is pt of a adorment 2003, which use to be a annual event celebrated african art, fashion health and natural hairstyles. We are part of the 2 million strong African and Caribbean community that live all over the Uk, most being of 1st and 2nd generation british born African and Caribbean. We are your brothers and sisters who were taken by force from the mother land Africa and seperated, we ended up in the caribbean and you guys in america. peace

  • i had to stop watching this because i could hardly understand wut they were saying with those strong accents! let the women be natural or relaxed or whatever they like its they own decision! lol!

  • thanx 4 comment sorry you coudn't understand what was being said, This is how most of us speak in the uk. Watch it again i m sure u will make out the words lol.

  • My sistas hair is relaxed, mine is natural. We have no inclination 2 hav eachothers hair, to each her own. My sis can manage her hair betta that way, I can manage mine betta this way. She understands her hair, i understand mine. She looks after her hair, i look after mine. After yrs of relaxin she still has a full head of hair & it grows n grows. After all my life of natural, i have a full head of hair & it grows thru maintenance & care. let no1 judge the other, or impose their ideals on any1.

  • i just realised this was in england how stupid i do not recognise part of my own accent lol

  • yeah i filmed it in Kensington for Adorment 2003, if u look out on my page you will c more clip from that event

  • Now this lady who talking is crazy. IT does NOT CAUSE CANCER. OMG. Now I'm going natural because relaxers cost too much! But if you want to wear your hair natural or relax, it up to you. They are both beautiful!

  • exactly. IDGAF what ppl do w/ their hair, not my problem lol. although i did hear that when they do autopsies on black women w/ perms, they always find gangrene under their scalps *shrugs*

btw coming from a girl w/ natural hair, if you think being natural will be cheaper than getting perms, clearly your product junkieism hasn't kicked in yet. when it does you'll see that the cost pretty much evens out lol.

  • OMG!I heard that too!And I just went from natural to relaxed hair again and I'm so scared!!!Please tell me where you found that info!

  • I heard that too...about the gangrene...THAT IS NOT HEALTHY, NO MATTER HOW PRETTY IT LOOKS! GROSS!

  • @gogobergie2000 I know this reply is late, but relaxers do cause cancer. Your comment just proves and shows are dumb, and retarded the black race is as a whole. Go pick up a science book and read!

  • @MrsBooker100 You are going to insult my intelligence when your grammar is incorrect. Obliviously, you are not very educated! Of course, if you do not go to a professional that knows what they are doing, you can fuck yourself up.Child relaxers are bad too. Duh! I am natural and I have nothing against what people put in their hair ,bitch. Get a hobby!

P.S. Thank you for thinking I"m so important that you generalized me under a whole categorize of people. Thanks! :)

  • @gogobergie2000 OOhh a typical nigga b!tch, calling somebody a b!tch. No you're not important but your comment was just plain stupid.. Got a hobby, and your still a retard. LOL

  • @MrsBooker100 Thank you again! I feel so popular! :D! Still think you are a Bitch and at less I can spell it right! Lmao! I am extremely proud to be black and to have natural hair. I did not use anything to degrade my race by using the n-word. So, you are definitely a bitch , an uneducated person ( will not use your term because it degrades people who are mentally challenged) and so on! lol, you the reason why I stay a way from people like you! -Peace

  • I wonder if anyone realized that this has a historical basis.

  • Sweety the only thing proven to give anyone cancer is the Sun which we will never escape from and radiation....go natural because you want to wear your natural hair for yourself....don't let anyone scare into doing something.....believe nothing you hear & half of what you...think for yourself.....HEALTHY hair is beautiful

  • I noticed the natural haired sisters & men who bash women who are relaxed & natural say the samething....perms make you more prone to cancer...WAKE UP BLK PPL DIABETES & HEART DISEASE IS KILLING US!!!! USING 5 TABLESPOONS OF SALT IN OUR FOOD IS FREAKIN KILLING US!!!! MY MOM SUFFERS FROM HIGH CHOLESTEROL NOT MEMORY LOSS!!! BLK PPL FOUGHT FOR DESEGREGATION ONLY TO MAKE SEPARATIONS AMONG OURSELVES WHETHER LIGHT SKIN OR DARK SKIN, NATURAL OR PERMED...JAMAICAN OR HAITIAN...ALWAYS F*CKIN SOMETHING

  • men who bash women who are relaxed****** X out & natural...I was worked up...forgive me lol

  • Agreed

  • Question? waht do you mean Jamaican or Haitian Inever heard of that before please do do tell

  • it was a comparison on how blk ppl are always putting something against another...Jamaicans & Haitians are always battling saying things about each other, just like Dominicans & Puerto Ricans. Natural vs Relaxed is just one of the many things we battle against each other & there's also the never ending Light Skin or Dark Skin...it's quite exhausting

  • Its more the dominicans and haitians who fight.

  • when you go natural do you not still take care of your hair??? Do you not still moisturize??? If one doesn't take care of their hair umm hello?!?!?!!?!? IT'S GOING TO F*CKIN BREAKOFF!!! This lady talk about the back of head has never grown back since she was 17 but meanwhile she has a red dye job!?!?!?!?!? BLACK NEEDS MOISTURE!!!! WHETHER IT'S RELAXED OR NATURAL!!!! HAIR THAT LACKS MOISTURE FEELS THE SAME-DRRYYYYYY.....natural hair can't take more heat than permed her cause it's natural

  • if u moisturize the relax hair it becums frezzy

  • I am worried you thought about that statement & really typed it....

  • Quit accusing people of relaxer there hair, if its theres choice its their choice. Please shut the f*** up. Relaxed hair is also beautiful

  • some people with natural hair say they don't use chemical on their hair but yet bleach their skin. make-up is also not natural. if we are going to start talking about natural, let's talk about everything. The point is stop judging. do what is best for you and be happy with yourself. Am natural because it makes me happy and i love it. All my friends relax their hair thats their choice. Sometime God wants us to do what is best for us. not for everyone else. so go home and make love to ur husband

  • Im 19 and Ive had chemical hair since i was 5. I feel that mothers shouldnt relaxed their kids hair until their old enough to take care of it themselves. See i never liked relaxed it. I always love big, curly hair.. and thats what i have. Now my mother is mad at me because i cut my hair.. i only did it because i feel natural is the better way for me. Mothers, you should wait to relaxed your daughters hair until she can take care of it on her own. If she doesnt like it, she will start over

  • The naturals shouldnt put down the women with relaxed hair because its their decision. Yes i recently went natural and i understand what the woman on the mic was saying. The chemicals does go into the brain and yes perms do make your hair thinner over the years and break off. But everyone has the right to do what ever they want. Educate, and the rest is up to the individual

  • I don't think it's a matter of wearing your hair one way or the other. The issue is when you have identity crises b/c of your natural hair. I wear my hair natural b/c I realized that I was embarrassed of it. I don't chastise others for the choice they make...only if that choice is out of shame for who they are!

  • I have tough natural african hair- I am fully tanzanian and my hair is very hard to maintain. Unless my hair is wet, I cannot put a comb through my hair. If people have hairs as tought as mine i understand why people relax their hair. woul

  • hey it is your choice..if you don't like the chemical relaxer that's ok but leave the other people alone....your are the the minor group.

  • Actually, naturals are the majority, take a trip to Africa and the carribean...

  • Where did ya'll get this CRAZY idea that black women with relaxed hair look anything like a European woman?

They don't by the way... no matter how much weave you put in there, it wont look like Pamela Anderson....

I could care less what you do to your head as long as you don't tell me to relax mine.

  • your words are so right

  • you see everybody talk about natural hair..but everybody go out and get the eyelash wax and shave they leg if you going natural go all the way..natural...not half ass...holla

  • These things are not the same as wearing the natural hair that God made you and not being so ashamed of it you want to relax it because you can't appreciate it. What you're talking about with eyelash wax and shaving your legs are things of vanity. If we were going to be all natural, shoo don't wash your rump after you boop or don't take a shower. Not the same

  • My little sis has relaxed hair and its long, thick and beautiful. I have natural long and thick hair. Both hair types are alot of work and requires experimenting to learn your hair type, products and styles that work.

Relaxed or natural our hair takes work. Both can be beautiful and work for you. Why the argument? Make new advances if the chemicals are damaging, don't just complain.

  • WOW MrsDomino you've got a lot to say. I have NATURAL like serious and you are right people should no their hair types. Relaxed hair is bad but I'm not gone down anyone. Some people just can't keep up with the responsiblity that comes with natural hair sooo...yea.

  • Black folk don't even know their damn hair types, we base our hair types on European criteria.

  • These relaxer companies are not going to tell you if it is causing you cancer. It isn't your fault that your mommy did this to you but you can stop the cycle of Self Hate!

  • hey! there british!...that's so cool
