  • RIP headphone users

  • Shredders no way - we use tornado shredding - loud but not lazy

  • you should put some dust or somethin in it so as to better see the tornado's shape.

  • I bought this at Walmart

  • I wanna put a whole bunch of ants on that table and turn it on

  • 204 people don't have a table top tornado.

  • Will they be in the stores for Christmas?

  • As much as I appreciate this channel, this video was a bit pointless, wasn't it. Was there something especially new in it? Has someone come up with a cunning way to rescue people in ruined buildings with this? Might as well have left this to the text media, instead of wasting bandwidth on something like this.

  • @ HellsPlumber I voted your comment up.

  • Stick a model village under it, some toy cars and a community of catterpillars and I'll watch it again.

  • 500 slaves were used for the making of this video

  • clearly we build a really big one attach it to a really big plane and fly it over to someone we really don't like and laugh manically like a comic book villain, mwuha, mwuhaha, MWUHAHAHA! whose with me? (I might know where you live!)

  • Are those tic-tacs?

  • Did I pay for this? nope

Did I click on this? yep

  • I feel dumber having seen this

  • 81 people are impressed by vacuum cleaners.

  • My Dyson does this, but it's much more exciting. And portable.

  • say something , you boring lady! what is going on and what can we use this table top tornado for`? where is she today. lol

  • fucking amazing

  • simulator...? i think we already have computer for that, right?

  • I'm sure it can cure cancer

  • we they spinning pills?

  • Next time; don't suck please.

  • this is so useful...

  • For those missing the narration:

This experiment shows the tornadic effect of styrofoam under a series of fans. Researchers hope to one day licence the technology to Ikea.

  • where's that cool narrator? she always says the use of the projects at the end... oh wait this one hasn't got any.

  • Our tornado simulator at UBC is so much better

  • Hahaha, what a retarded project.

  • It's an incredible simulation of a packing peanuts storm.

  • So... I can do the same with a couple of vacuum cleaners and a towel.

  • Oh cool. I got one of these in my vacuum cleaner.

  • I was atleast expecting it to rise or something...

  • wtf

  • That’s what a $5billion meteorology grant gets these days.

  • The New Scientist youtube channel is terrible.....

If you want a good science channel check out sixtysymbols, they wrote 'merry christmas' on a snowflake under an electron microscope :)

  • Well done. You have created a giant hairdryer..fancy getting back to your jobs?

  • i can do that with my ass

  • Isn't kinda known that the pieces will go around and around and around and around and around and around...

  • Comment removed

  • im sure a little wind and some foam peanuts are going to cure cancer. >.>

    seriously, scientists, wtf?

  • @amicusnemini because every scientist in the world should be focused on the cure for cancer

  • Are those...packing peanuts?

  • @ellentheninja13

    a death machine for insects

  • science fail?

  • *jizzes in pants*

  • Reminds me of my great aunt.

  • woohooo....

  • that clip sucked for obvious reasons

  • I'm lost without the droll accented lady to tell me what it is and how it will rescue people.

  • @EGarrett01 ha ha ha!!!!!!!! thats just made my day that comment!! ha ha ha! thanks.

  • @EGarrett01 lol ya so true man.

  • @EGarrett01 ROFL

  • @EGarrett01

it can suck people out if they're stuck in a hole.

  • @Ivultorky or it can be used as tornado vacuum cleaner inside a house. now how great is that?

  • lets scale this up and hold the world ransom with our tornado machines

  • what did you do with those pills after ???

    huh ?

    LOL

  • FAyul

  • i could make a better tornado with my hands

  • kinda looked like a grade 3 science experiment..

  • Humm False description. A new simulator can recreate powerful storms,Or you migth not know what Powerful means.

  • "This device has the ability to simulate a F3-size storm and that's never been done in Japan," Kikitsu says.

*cough-bullshit-cough*, go ahead; pull the other one, Kikitsu.

"Kikitsu and his team plan to test the device by building model houses that fit under his simulator." -Lmao-

  • well that was a minute wasted :( I expect more of newscientistvideo clips

  • Look Mom!!! I can swing around these thingies without touching them!!! I wish I know how much money they spent on that machine.

  • Usually newscientist i can accept the seemingly irrelevent short clips due to them usually having far reaching applications but seriously what was that?

    That was weak.

  • LOL my vacuum cleaner is doing better

  • that was boring

  • Utterly pointless...

  • wtf, add some smoke so you can see the vortex

  • Who the heck spent money to that?

  • hmm if we put a dirty plate under it could i tmake th efood all fly off... :)

  • my dyson does that :p

  • Looks like a styrofoam mosh pit

  • what was the point of this

  • Every "Tornado simulator" I've seen seems to be based upon mechanical air movers, I.E. a fan or fans of some configuration.

Why doesn't researchers build a tornado simulator that employs the same natural forces which naturally contribute to tornado formation ?

  • are those tictacs? :D

  • @ibo852 No, they are tactics :)

  • @zappasoul you are absolutely right! :D

  • are those tictas? :D

  • should have used sand

  • A giant step forward in the fight against styrofoam popcorn.

  • Old D:

  • well tat was a waste of life

  • Dissapointing much?

  • does it tidy tables?

  • this may be used to distribute cheetos in poor countries

  • @eldarvalar lmao

  • Now make one 100x bigger and you have a tornado weapon.

  • just after the video stopped the machine lost control -ala ed 209 in robocop- and made a bee-line straight to the nearest trailer park. cant fight the feeling

  • on a scale of 1 to gay, this experiment ranks: really gay.

  • @oobernerd lol, scale of 1 to gay

  • and the Chinese beat us again

  • shuda put little legs on those thingys and put black spots on there pretend it was cows :DD yea yea?

  • Fuckin tornadoes... how do they work.

  • @soulhunger1 Hot air rises, cold air decends. when a cold front moves in at a higher layer of the atmosphere, the hot air forces its way thru the cold air and the cold air forces its way down thru the hot air. and they pass thru each other in a similar way of how water funnels and spirals down a drain

  • Thumbs up if you tried real hard to come up with a porn joke.

  • @RDJim

    I failed

  • One step closer to weather warfare

  • But can it kill people?

  • now they need to create tornado in a can!

  • That is one fancy popcorn stirrer.

  • massive vacum cleaner

  • Usually they have a voice over on these videos instead of the video sound. This was a bit pointless if they don't tell how it works and what it is useful for.

  • slightly more interesting than watching paint dry.

  • why is everyone on about cancer? cancers not even the largest killer of people anyway, and not all scientists want to study cures for cancer, why dont you get off your chair and cure cancer if your so worried about it ffs

  • I cannot even start to imagine how many cancers can be blown away by this portable tornado. Keep up the good work scientists!

  • This will one day be used to cause disaster situations. Then we can use our new robots and new cameras etc., to rescue the victims.

  • @coolman9999uk LOL, that makes sense! You invent something, then you create the necessity for it!

  • Get into the storm cellar! The Tic-Tacs are everywhere?

  • A new way to sort pills perhaps?

  • looks like a big wste of money to me to create something that makes styrofoam peanuts go around in moving circles on a table. couldn't someone just put them in a big bowl on wheels and stir them around with a big spoon? i'm just joking...

  • Very interesting video. Well done.

You can tell the depth of ignorance some people have towards science by the dumb comments and the vile language. Lack of language skills/empty heads always go for the swear words when speaking.

    Sorry state of affairs!

  • looks expensive

  • I sure am glad I wasn't caught in that level 5 beast!

  • Comment removed

  • truly a groundbreaking experiment! Haha

  • @darkschevich It's likely just a demonstration of the apparatus; I'm betting they track the individual pieces and model storm systems :P

  • did he die?

  • wtf? this is "new" science?

  • @teleomorph I'm betting they track the individual pieces and model storm systems with the information - something that may indeed lead to "new" science.

  • marshmallows are alive!

  • I hope you sponsored this yourself. What a waste.

  • NewScientistVideo:

Why do you upload videos in the most horrendous low-quality format offered by youtube?

    Sincerely,

    My Eyes and Ears

  • A new simmalator..

  • this video could have done without sound, i think i woke everybody

  • Comment removed

  • crap

  • In scale those that styrophome is probly something like a minivan :P

  • For everyone crying "USELESS! WASTED MONEY!", imagine in 10 years when this machine helps improve housing complexes to better withstand tornados.

  • @xGranmargx I know! Can't see beyond what's in front of their eyes...

  • context?

  • That was a stupid waste of time and effort.

  • well that sucks!

  • Well that didn't accomplish anything.

  • what... the fuck... was that.

  • So many small minds failing to comprehend the greatness behind such science. If you're not impress, go make your own mini tornado making machine; and then come back and talk shit.

    fucking idiots

  • Newscientist, You just embarrassed yourself.

  • wtf it cant even lift popcorns

  • That was unimpressive.

  • cool, but i dont consider barely lifting styrofoam as powerful...

  • How about a small model house made from matchsticks?

  • Meh, we had better Bingo machines in our days.

  • not impressed

  • Cool machine. I wonder if this could be used to test for better designed tornado resistant structures.

  • Wow. Styrofoam packing peanuts and a hair dryer. Science is grand.

  • Science used Wing Attack!

  • @M30W3R

yes science hit air with its wing.

it didnt do anything that makes sense, like gust or whirlwind attack, it flapped its fucking wings.

  • @MrYourvideossuck

Are you seriously correcting this guy's pokemon reference? time to take off that pokemon shirt, nerdlinger. Of course not in sight, no one needs to see those floppy moobs.

  • @M30W3R Wing Attack is not effective. Interest did not react

  • I look forward to seeing this used as a weapon in the future!

  • i make a better tornado, my filling my sink n then letting it go down the drain.

  • @ElHomE That's a simple liquid vortex (that you didn't make)... try making one with air... I bet you can't.

  • Should have used talcum powder or something to demonstrate the airflow.

  • @Chomalom or different colored powders each with different densities!

  • @Chomalom

thats 15-20 metres per second of airflow, so talcum would be gone within a few frames.

  • Those are oxycontin pills and the "generator" is just Rush Limbaugh hoovering them up.

  • @bdf2718: No, that's the orgy in Barnie Frank's apartment.

  • A new simulator can recreate powerful storms.

idd so powerfull some pills or small balls can fly.

  • meh

  • SCIENCE IS LAME THESE DAYS

  • i had no idea storms were that small :o

  • oh wow how amazing...ly boring.

  • pizza topping maker

  • -__-

  • A "table-top tornado"....or a tempest in a teacup? I can make a bigger fart than that just by eating Italian food.

  • my bathtub can do a better tornado

  • People, these videos are just little add-ons to newscientist articles on their website.

  • craptastic

  • Quite underwhelming

  • ha ha, the pop up ad for this one was "baltimore fans"

  • Here's five bucks ... get yourself some better equipment.

  • a fan and a tube?

  • Really??

    This is worth uploading???

Even the myth-busters could do better than that......

  • lol, there is a fan in the corner, like just in case the tornado isn't enough, they can turn on the fan

  • most impressive thing ive ever seen in my entire fucking life.
