Coke didn't want to be sued for the coca ( secret ingridient) aka, cocaine, in thier formula so they changed it by making "new coke". Then they practically got sued for changing it. So they went back to the regular old coke and introduced sprite, similar to new coke.

@jacobh1995 Pepsi had already been steadily encroaching on Coke's market share for years when Pepsi introduced the "Pepsi Challenge", a comparative taste test between Coke and Pepsi, in the late 1970s. To Coke's deep chagrin, even Coca-Cola employees who replicated the Pepsi Challenge preferred Pepsi to Coke more than half the time; this was the motivation for the introduction of New Coke, not the removal of cocaine. And Sprite was introduced in the early 1960s to compete with 7-Up, not Pepsi.
