Good God i know from the hair its in 80's but still the sound is track from heaven!. I sit here now with tears running of my youthful days back than. And how my ants and mother all sang. Thank you for posting this. Thank you
thanks for your comment oconlan003, I saw Mary perform this "live" some years ago in Nottingham UK, and you could have heard a pin drop. Good Luck. Redhairedmary.
It's funny, but I don't know anybody in North Kerry who claims to be able to see Kilkee from there, only people who've looked at a map without regard to the fact that Kilkee is in a dip, and there are hills in the way. However, I don't really know why we're arguing the point after your sending me the full Jack McAuliffe "Kerry" set of words, which are completely different to the "Clare" ones that Mary is singing here. In fact the Kerry version doesn't mention Kilkee, or Kilrush, or Clare at all!
The Cliffs Of Dooneen By Jack McAuliffe Verse 1 I have travelled afar from my own native home. Away oer the billows, away oer the foam I have seen many sights but no equal Ive seen To the old rocky slopes by the cliffs of Dooneen. Verse 2 I have seen many sights of Columbus fair land, Africa and Egypt so Delightful and grand, But dig me a grave were the grass it grows green On the old rocky slopes by the cliffs of Dooneen.
@ neknedrav, there's no need to be so rude to this lovely singer, and you're wrong. I defy you to go to Dooneen in Kerry and find any cliffs, or to see the town of Kilkee (where I live). The song is about Moveen in Co. Clare, which does have spectacular cliffs, and from where you can see both Kilrush and Kilkee, probably the only place from which that is possible. The name got changed to Dooneen in the song, probably because it is easier to sing!
Another ignoramus! Where did you hear that load of crap?
Some facts for you-
Dooneen lies between Ballybunion and Beale in north Kerry, six miles north of Ballybunion. The song was written by a man called Mc Auliffe who was from Lixnaw. He wrote it when he was labouring with a family called Joy who lived near Dooneen point. I wouldn't go boasting about being from Kilkee either if I were you
I know where Dooneen Point is thank you. I've been there, have you? If so, perhaps you could tell me where the cliffs are, or at exactly what vantage point on them you have to stand in order to see Kilkee and the west coast of Clare (which are on the Atlantic, not the Shannon Estuary) from, though I'll grant you that on a clear day you might be able to make out the mouth of Kilrush Creek. Otherwise, if you are right about the location, the song is nonsense.
On the other hand, I could take you to the top of Moveen Hill and from those "high rocky slopes" show you the cliffs, as well as fine views of "the towns of Kilkee and Kilrush", "the high rocky mountains o'er the west coast of Clare" and even the glorious "view o'er the Shannon" (to Kerry) -depending on whose set of words you are using. All of which would make sense of the song.

To anyone on here criticising Mary Duff, you are just jealous idiots who wouldn't know talent if it came up to them and sang to them in the street!

Verse 3
How pleasant to walk on a fine summers day,
And to view the sweet cherries that will never decay,
Where the seagrass and seaweed and the old carrageen
All grow from the rocks by the cliffs of Dooneen.
Verse 4
The Sandhills of Beal are glorious and grand,
And the old castle ruins looking out on the strand,
Where the hares and the rabbits are there to be seen
Making holes for their homes by the cliffs of Dooneen.

Verse 5
I have tracked my loves footsteps to the boathouse of old
And the dance on the hillside where love stories are told,
Its there you will see both the lad and the colleen
Moving round by the shore of the cliffs of Dooneen
Verse 6
Farewell Dooneen, Farewell for a while,
And to those kind-Hearted neighbours that I left in the isle,
Ma my soul never rest till its laid on the green
Near the old rocky slopes by the Cliffs of Dooneen

Ignorant cow whoever she is. She should at least get the area she is singing about correct. The cliffs of Dooneen are in Kerry not Clare.

A verse in the original song goes-
The sand hills of Beale are glorious and grand,
And the old castle ruin stands out on the strand,
It is there you will see every lad and colleen,
Moving round to the slopes by the cliffs of Dooneen.
There is another Duff version of this song posted by DonnyOsmondForever where she corrects herself and introduces the song as being from Kerry.
Please be good enough in future to check your information before getting on your high horse.
