I was a soldier sitting in Iraq; Mosul to be exact. And it was my job to do so, just like it was my wife's job to do so at the time. She is currently serving her second deployment over there. No, I don't. But, that's a tough one to answer. I can say, when face to face with the people, you get a sense that you've helped them, yes. In those moments, you feel like you've made a difference and it's for the better. But they are small victories in the shadow of bigger losses. The thing is, there's a feeling that a lot of the violence is due to our presence over there. Most of the violence don't come from the Iraqis themselves, but from militants coming from other places.

That violence is more like a wave, not an army force with a number to it. These militants come from neighboring countries and so on, kill more Iraqi civilians than anything, they don't get many of our soldiers. But, to bring it back to your question, the immediate feeling is like you've helped them. But in a deeper way, there's also an understanding that us being there only riles up these guys to attack the civilians are who pay. That doesn't do much for feeling like you've helped.

Last thing, sorry. What I meant by the enemy is more like a wave than an enemy force is: It's not like you can say, there's 80 thousand of them and we're 200 thousand. They aren't identifiable. they don't wear uniforms.

When you detain, stop or kill one of the enemy, another takes their place. I remember a week where it was really bad in Mosul. Support was called in and it was music to our ears, lol. .50 cals, strikers, etc all cleaning up the place. A week later; another wave of insurgents.

To give an example, say a house is infested with roaches. You spray some BlackFlag, lay some sticky pads down, etc. You may catch hundreds of them, but in about a week, the roaches seem to have come right the hell back.
