THANK YOU YETIBUTT! I've been freestyling and self-teaching Nunchaku for god knows how long. I can whip them out in a bar and scare the living fuck out of anyone who stares me down. But when I actually practiced STRIKING with a pair, they'd come right off the target and hit me in the face (most of the time). Thanks to your vid, my head's gonna be hurtin a lot less. RESPECT!
Incidentally, I'd also like to ask: What are your nunchaku made of? I have some homemade ones I crafted by heating up dowel wood, and while I'd like to practice such striking techniques as you are demonstrating here on a few spare bricks, I want to know if that's more or less what yours are.
Oh, and one more not-so-important thing I forgot to say in my first message: You're so fast with that thing, I thought for a few times that you had two of them at once. You're that good. Keep it up!
For one thing, I've always feared that exchanging the Nunchaku between hands in the ways you've shown here might not have any purpose in combat. But after seeing you do this, that anxiety has been neutralized.
Secondly, I'm very happy that you showed the Nunchaku breaking a hard target. Thanks for that, too!
Finally, for explaining and demonstrating each technique... You rock! Thanks a million!
hi jet, I have a problem when play nuchaku, my nun is 24mm diameter, 34 cm long, the string is 2,5 cm. When is hit the nunchaku to plastic box (as yours), the nunchaku rebound to my hand. It hurts me much. I try to sweep my hand longer to reduce rebound forces, but it will make me hit again slower. How should I do in my case? Thank you
Nunchaku scare me, I have a lot of respect for people who KNOW how to use them. They sure are intimidating. But the level of skill needed to practically use it for combat is just too demanding.
I've been researching & practicing , trying to get ready for my weapons test for my black belt. Nunchucks is my choice of weapons. I have to say your video is an excellent tool for me. Thank you for making & posting this video. Probrably the best one out of all I have watched. I do hope you make more instructional for nunchucks.
yetibut we know your probley the best in the forum so I was going to ask you this. I just started using corded nunchaku because after three years of praticing with chain I realized after I picked up a pair of corded chucks. I was going to buy either two pair of 14 inch or 12 inch so I could learn to dual weild them not for stylish moves but for combat. I use a 1 1/2 cord so which one would suit me better. I've never used 14'' inch ones and I dont know if work as good but they have stronger strik
This has to be one of the best nunchaku videos on youtube, thank goodness someone actually knows how to use them! I am sick and tired of seeing fancy twirls and catches and not actually hitting anything!! Well done for producing something that is real! 5 STAR!
I am very impressed. Best nunchaku use i ever saw!!!! I like how you use your body, the generation of power is very obvious. This is way above most nunchaku vids!
I agree. After seeing all the fake batton twirling sissy nunchaku vids on youtube I was discouraged. In those videos there is no doubt that any little girl could knock those fools on their asses with a kick to the groin. This video is a display of true nunchaku mastery and there is no doubt this guy could probably drop 5 guys out cold with a pair of nunchaku. LOL Great Video and Great work!! You have a lot to teach. Please, more videos and suggestions on conditioning.
big in the game cant wait for next world cup i am trainning evey day this world cup plus i have new moves not sure if i will post them cos everyone will nick them and then there not new any more but i love yor work you are in the in the top ten in the world big up fro the uk AKA offya5
Very impressive indeed. A copius, well thought-out amount of good advice to those who asked respectfully, and an even nicer amount of sand to carry for those who hated.
NIce video. The great thing is that you still keep the nunchaku follow its orbit after the strike, especially when you are using a long string chux. Like the way you say " fishtail" but you could still manage it. Great work! As for the recoil problem, I still find it hard to decide if you can hit your enemy with a "hit with the tip " or a " snap strike " as you enemy will also move and also do the block, wont they ?
Much better than 99 percent of the "freestyle" nunchaku artists posted. Its good to see that while you can do the freestyle tricks and moves, its refreshing to see someone actually demonstrate them from a combat perspective. Also i am impressed that you hold your nunchaku in the traditonal okinawan grip(close to the bottom to utilize maximum reach and power), to often do i see people treat the nunchaku like a toy, but like you, they need to repect it as a weapon. Very impressive.
Hi, great video. You have some cool moves I havent seen before, I wish you could have slowed down a little during parts of it. its hard to catch some of the things you are doing. It's amazing how effortlessly you swing them behind your back and over your opposite shoulder. I keep hitting the middle of my back. How long are your nunchaku?
Yes. There are a few ways to deal with recoil. One is to hit with just the tip of the nunchaku and follow through. It will fishtail, but not bounce back. Another is to snap strike, like hitting with a wet towel.
You can also drive the striking chuck into the strike, so it kinda hits and sticks.
It all takes practice. When learning, you will hit yourself with recoils. I'd recommend getting a sand bag and hitting it with your fists and wrists regularly (firm, not hard) to toughen them up.
Thanks for the comment! The plastic core of foam chucks will break if you hit things with them. Of course, they won't hurt if they rebound :) They sell sold foam safety chucks, those should be good for strikes. I don't have a pair, but they use them for sparring, so they must be pretty durable :)
Yeti has the skills to fight or do freestyle. A true force to be reckoned with. Truly amazing!

Every punch, kick, or strike with a melee weapon can be blocked for dodged. That does not make it automatic.
Training by striking an innanimate object will never duplicate actual sparring or combat.

Hey u got pretty good moves. where did you got those nunchucks? they look larger than normal...
DarthSalva 3 years ago
They are pretty much traditional size. 12" baton, about 3" string. I hold them in a low grip for striking, which increases the effective length.
