He says that modern day angry citizenary who turn to the right is how you end up in fascism. Right Zinn, because those who are angry and turn to the left never turn to authoratiran Communism/Socialism?
Gotta love the double standard and fear mongering of partisans like Zinn.
Great man. Too bad he wasn't the kind of communist that US officials wanted to work with. They saved all that favoritism for the Chinese brand of Confucian Communism and its obeisance to Crony capitalism in place of socialism, i.e. "socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics." The US plutarchy loved that idea. It completely skipped worker ownership and worker representation but allowed foreign corporations a piece of the pie.
- a Palestinian Christian thankful for Howard's support of the Palestinian cause to get freedom, equality, and self-determination for Palestinians under Israeli occupation.
1000 Jackblairs wouldn't even be worth the life of 1 Howard Zinn. Whether you agree with his politics or not, you'll never accomplish even a quarter of what he did during his life. So please, shut the fuck up.
Hey Jackblair2, Profanity, ignorance and lack of any kind of respect for a great man; dead or otherwise, is a sign that he was speaking for you. After he finished fighting for you're country, he tried to educate you about the men that were exploiting you. Glad he's dead? he was a last great hope for main street America. you should, though I guess you won't... be ashamed
I agree with all that except 'last'. Thankfully, Prof. Zinn enlightened and inspired a great many people to continue to struggle and educate others. He left a legacy. RIP Mr. Zinn.
When I read A People's History of the United States, his clear and precise way of writing and his incredibly in depth research into the most unconventional sources grips you and made me like him immediately. I not only greatly admire his academic research but also for the fact that he talked the talk and did something about it. For example, he stood up (and actually got fired for) sticking up for his students and Spelman College who took action for the Civil Rights Movement.
What I meant to say was that it was from unconventional sources (ie, not texts which are not usually cited when talking about history) AND it went incredibly in depth into the subjects it discusses. For instance, the way it looks at the relationship between white indentured servants and black slaves was deep and eye opening.
My problem with your criticism is that I really don't think you're hitting the substance of my answer. The real substance lies in the opinions, not some technical wording.
the labor movement and the left in general need to ask themselves why in the worst economic crisis since the great depression the people, the working and middle classes, are turning to the right.
germany, france, italy, greece have all voted for right of center parties, and the far right has grown more than any other party. in the recent euro elections, actual fascists were elected
and in the US it's the far right, the "teabaggers", that are dominating the populist discourse and activism. there are more people protesting obama's "socialism" than his war policy
disenchantment with capitalsim has never been higher, yet it's the right wing populism that grows
And it's horrible to think that the British Nationalist Party did win a seat, but for the left Joe Higgins from the Socialist Party of Ireland was elected to the European Union.
yeah and the "teabaggars" say the republicans are sell outs too. yet they still take to the streets. where's the left populism in the streets. this has nothing to do with political parties
@nubbs I have met hundreds of lower income and middle class people around the country and none of them are steering toward the right. Why else would so many vote for Obama, except for total disgust with the eight year rape of the Bush Policies (the Right)
you need to read "what's the matter with kansas". moyers interviewed the author of the book about 4 years ago your anecdotal aside, the actual evidence suggest that working and middle class americans are in fact moving further to the right, while the center in american politics has itself shifted to the right
'War is a profit making machine. . .,' I'd say that pretty much sums up that!

"Sturggle" and "educate"? Zinn did no original research. He was a hack who wrote at a 5th grade level.

You're speaking to a historian here. Using "unconventional sources" does not denote depth of research.

Exactly my sentiments whenever I contemplate the presidency of Ronald Reagan.
