in order to make a hero or dark chao you need to repeatedly pet them with a dark or hero character (A LOT) and as for nights chao you need to either make it a dark flying chao or a neutral flying chao.
If i'm not mistaken, under some conditions, a normal runner will become blue and have the sonic spikes. But I haven't played this game in a long, long time. It's nostalgic for me. That song, "follow me", almost makes me cry every time I hear it.

you have to make it dark and give it a ton of running for the shadow chao and the same for the sonic chao only make it a hero.
