NOT.... @ 880peth... I do get a broadway show feel on this version. And when I envision the show, IT's GreaT. The Chieftons did a great job, Plant, lucked out.
Yep...Jesse's version is definitive as are most songs by their authors. But this song has no bad versions that I've ever heard. And Burdon does a very credible job.
Eric Burden is one the great singers, but this has to be the worst version I've ever heard of such a fantastic song, and a waste of his talent. Sorry, it's just bad on every front - it misses the essential desperation of the original version and it's "funkiness" really does not sit well at all. I would go as far as to say that no one has ever covered this song well! I wait with baited breath for better versions...
I like this much better than Robert Plant's version. Eric's voice has that depth and power that are hard to surpass. The bagpipes are stunning as well.
This version itself is really great, with its own style - it's absolutely ejnoyable and i really like it, but i must admit that i prefer Plant's version, as i think it captures the mood coming from the lyrics better; Plant's version is just more essencial to this particular song.
But Burdon sings it with more power and he sings much higher than the other version(s). Also it's funky and the musicians are brillant, check out the solos. Plant's version is more softy...
@JulianThomePictures apples and oranges, can't compare them, "stand alone intrepetation's", different facet's of the same diamond, ain't it great that these folk's have different takes on the same tune?
Robert Plant's is really great. Personally, his and Richie Haven's are my favorites. You want heart & soul?... listen to Richie Haven's version. You can find it on "Cuts to the Chase" CD, which is awesome in total.
Youngbloods did it better than anyone. Plant clearly knows deep depression...as this song is the very best about that painful subject. Anyone who chooses to sing this song KNOWS about the deep darkness depression brings. The miracle is that tons of people decide NOT to commit suicide. Hang on there brothers and sisters...as long as u can.
Listen live verzion of Eric Burdon Darkness Darkness ,the songs is much different on live, and more hard-rock and sexy passion. RP verzion is for me little soft for me

@88Opeth88 Neither Robert Plant nor Eric Burdon did this originally: it was written by Jesse Colin Young, and originally released by him & The Youngbloods
This is a wonderful version, I have listened to three vs but I have always loved Eric, yes it's got some funk down and a fiddle. It's now my fav vs thank you!

Didn't anyone mention Mott the Hoople's version? I deserves mention even if it isn't on YouTube, so I'm mentioning it. Good stuff- check it out.

The rhythm section is lame.
Burdon sounds inspired.
Jesse Colin Young or Robert Plant are the way to go.

The original is by Jesse Colin Young. Eric's version is okay, but seek out Solas' version ... very unusual and beautiful.

Robert Plant's version is 100 times better in my opinion, and it's rare that covers are that much better then the originals.

It's a shame this only has 701 views, and Kat Perry's "Hot N' Cold" has 31 million. Jeez, what has America come to?

I don't like any song by Kate Perry compared to Burdon. Thanks for your comment. That's exactly what I'm thinkin bout too.
