milkmanv1: Foley & JR are almost at the same level of friendship as Austin is to JR, so really, JR openly took the attack in this shoot work, meant to promote Mankind & get people to understand the character's motives more. It only served to push Mankind into becoming a face later on, because people could relate to the oddball underdog.
"what's the name of the song in the end of this video with the piano"
It was Mick's end theme as Mankind. See, he would come to the ring to the tune entitled Ode to Frued, but would depart victorious to some melocholy piano music.
"Yeah, I think he has some stock invested in TNA. He praised TNA and talked down the wwe just like angle did"
All talent that's left WWE for TNA bash WWE. That's how it works, for you don't want to give credibility to a competing company. But Mick is the ONLY one who was able to legitmately go onto WWE [dot] com & speak to fans, get his newest book promoted, & be acknowledged by the WWE talent (as per a recent Punk promo), which shows you the respect the WWE has for Mick.
vargaisking/themacdown/TheJetsFan4Eva: Scripted or not, this was brilliant storytelling on Mick's part, since a lot of it was actually lifted from his true-to-life experiences as the awkward-around-girls oddball kid who was obsessed with pro wrestling (to which many a die-hard fans can relate to at some point in their lives).
This is what today's wrestling is missing. Raw emotion. Mick was able to get into a psyche that was not of his own. He was able to make us believe that everything he was saying really happened (which some of it did, such as the bloody t-shirt story). Mick belongs in the list of the best guys on the mic and I mean up there with guys like the Rock as well.
@WFAMoFo this is what's missing with wrestling today. The realism in the stories and characters like Mankind. Even Stone Cold back in '96 spoke of why he was so pissed off and hellbent on unleashing hell because he was jerked around for 7 years by other wrestling promotions like WCW where he never was given a chance to shine and then was fired on the phone as opposed to what he preferred, face to face. WWE needs to bring back the realism in their stories
mick foley was an amazing actor 2 play someone as psycho as mankind but also 2 make u feel sorry 4 him he actually is such a good actor and an amazing promo worker i think mick foley is truly a total legend
On the one hand, this is pro wrestling. On the other hand, the old photos and home video footage impart a sense of reality. So, how much of Mick's story here is real and how much is kayfabe?
@thebuckrogers22 I liked brown but I started watching when he wore business shirt and tie. When he started wearing the business shirt and tie he still loved pain but the element of being disturbed was sort of dropped. I prefer '96-'97 Mankind
@Ringotastic haha wrestlers should be allowed to get oscars for their acting. Today's WWE stars would get none though. Mankind would have a bunch though. If only other people understood how great this interview is
very sad i cant belive he want throw all that stuff in his life more guy .its fake belive me all that stuff he is tilling you is fake its all acting he is really is a nice guy he has a family and a wife he is a really nice guy
@taylor00ful It's true that Mick really is a super nice guy but if you do your research, you'll find out that the things he says in this interview are actually true. I know for a fact about how he was telling about how he wanted to be a Shawn Michaels type of wrestler when he first came to WWE in the late 80's but was treated like a jobber and then was released. He was pissed off that the WWE at the time didn't want him then but after years of tearing up his body to the point of looking ugly
@taylor00ful the WWE then wanted him. It angered him because Shawn Michaels in a way had what Mick wanted to be. The things he talks about is more of an anger that in reality he's shrugged off. Mick is a nice guy for real but the things he's endured are true which is what made him the man he is today
This is awesome im surprised that the WWe hasnt had another wrestler with split personalities. Like one time a face then later a heel. And back and forth
Ironically this wasn't even design to turn Mankind and or Mick Foley into a WWE superstar or even a babyface. I recall this was just something to fill time on RAW. But as luck would have it Vince became a real fan of Mick Foley and of the Mankind gimmick and after this interview Dude Love would make his WWE debut and then Cactus Jack would make his WWE debut. Like they say in pro wrestling "A lot of the times the best things that happen in wrestling aren't planned."
I like this Mankind-charakter more than the one he was at the "Rock and Sock Conection" era for example .. when he was playing this "freaky" Mankind, he was kind of scary i think
Abyss isint a mankind wannabe in the slightest, god the wrestling fans today are sooo fickle, infintile & just plain fucking naive. or whatever. Foley will go down as one of the greatest hardcore wrestlers of all time. This is how you shine a light on a talent that fans are familiar with but don't know the whole backstory about him(set aside the smart marks & diehard fans for a second).
The difference is that Mick Foley is a rare specimen when it comes to creating characters & pushing them.
@TheJetsFan4Eva oh really? you saying that is like saying "its not wrestling its just acting" its fake wrestling and this is a fake interview. stupid nonetheless
@vargasisking im not saying its fake wrestling its not fake wrestling its choreographed you try getting bags of thumbtacks dumped on you or getting punched in the face 52 weeks in a row. but this is acting ur really that retarded to not get what im saying?!?!
@TheJetsFan4Eva i understand what your staying but yeah this is acting but its fucking incredible acting and pro wrestling is a sport but you gotta realise to appreciate it and its also entertainment and its people like mick who has busted his body for entertainment and does this all for the fans
The other thing you have to remember is that The Monday Night Wars were going on around during that time. WWE (or WWF back then) had to win over viewers since they were in competition with WCW.
Foley is the only guy who can pull off the "multiple personality" gimmick. Loved his character development in 1997-onwards. Turned him from a good heel into a superstar.
This is how you're supposed to break the fourth wall in wrestling. Notice, this is a shoot work. Foley's still playing Mankind even though he's talking about Mick Foley. Russo ruined the whole shoot work thing by having the talent literally beat it in your face "WOW THIS IS A SHOOT YEAHH THIS IS [insert wrestlers real name] AND THIS IS A SHOOT, I'M SHOOTING NOW and if you forgot THIS IS A SHOOT!!"
@bigpoopie69 Very true. THIS is how you do a worked shoot I guess you could call it. This actually helped him get over as a face in WWE. When a shoot is done like this, it can produce some great, amazing things. For one, it was an AWESOME interview, & two, it's not often they did stuff like this, so it actually had MERIT and meant something. Hence why it is now a classic and legendary interview. All of the shoots Russo pulled were forgotten about in a day. He's a cancer to wrestling.
@Canny911: Russo wrote for the Attitude era, though. The difference between WCW & TNA against the Attitude years is the fact that at least for the Attitude years, someone was managing Russo, thus ensuring that he rarely screwed up (he still did from time to time, such as Mae Young giving birth to a hand, but not as often as he would if he was afforded the creative freedom he has had in WCW & TNA).

McMahon really went out on a limb for Foley by putting this on. Self Indulgent ridiculous tripe in hindsight. Worked cause The Taker put him over big big time.
I remember seeing this back in mid '97 on an episode of Raw. I been watching wrestling since 1991 or 1992 sometime during Wrestlemania 7. I saw this interview Mick Foley/Mankind did, I remember I was like crying when I saw this. The WWE doesn't even do things like this anymore...
I'm 24 now, but I saw this when I was 11 or 12. Very sad but sort of disturbing, something WWE doesn't do anymore...
sometimes ppl say that wrestling fans get too sucked into a character but dammit when you dont fit in in high school this man...this Mankind...is your role model.
It was an idea between Mick Foley and Vince McMahon for his debut character. And yes, he lost a chunk of his ear in a match with Vader. Read his auto-biography, "Have a Nice Day". It's great.
Copy rights to Cactus Jack was still under WCW, and they needed to develop some character for the WWE back turn; I'm they brought in Mankind. I love these interviews. Hall of Fame bound.
Yeah. The nurse asked him if wrestling was fake and threw his ear in the garbage! that bitch. He got it tangled on the ropes. Someone complained that the ropes in the ring were too loose, so before mick match they made it tighter. Mick foley didn't know this and got his head tangled between the ropes. he had to struggle and wiggle to get out. The tape is not as graphic, but that's how it occured. Its on wrestlinggonewrong(dot) com under wcw i believe.
Ouch!!!So,that's how Mick lost his ear...And yes,the nurse is a bitch.Hey,is it true Mankind is in TNA now?I can't watch it since I don't have that channel. That's why my relative told me.
@floeticdeath Have you read his book? Very powerful stuff in there and alot of history. I met him back in 2001 and he's such a great guy it's unbelievable.
i was a wrestling fan since i was 5, back in 1990-91...but this made me a real wrestling fan. when i saw someone that wasnt a "good guy" or a "badguy" but someone who was hurt, ost, and as some would say, strange. someone i could relate to
Funny, it's almost the opposite for me. I got into wrestling in late-1995, but stopped watching it, for the most part, after April 1, 1996, when Mick debuted as Mankind, because at seven years old, I was scared to death of him. This interview was what sort of got me over that fear... though, of course, the end of the last part of the interview took away some of the progress made...
its just that they look so different....... when he wears the mask(not exacly)........but its that they act so different when hes not wearing and when he is wearing the mask.......
It was also around when the Cactus Jack stories started to make the rounds and everyone was like, "Oh yeah, he was awesome." So the two aspects pushed him into greatness
the cheers he started getting after this was amazing

Funny, it's almost the opposite for me. I got into wrestling in late-1995, but stopped watching it, for the most part, after April 1, 1996, when Mick debuted as Mankind, because at seven years old, I was scared to death of him. This interview was what sort of got me over that fear... though, of course, the end of the last part of the interview took away some of the progress made...

lol Idk how you could be scared. lol mick foley was always funny to me.
"Do you think I got get a date after that?

its really cool that it was this interview that really put him over with the fans and everyone said that was never there intention.

It was also around when the Cactus Jack stories started to make the rounds and everyone was like, "Oh yeah, he was awesome." So the two aspects pushed him into greatness
