@pydbl I just wanted to write the same xD I was warming up for violin practice and listening to this and I when I got around 2:09 I stopped and was like 'ahhh... so nice...' = D
I cannot stop listening to this... this has a quality about it that no other interpretation does. I know that's how interpretations are kind of supposed to be,,, but this one is by far the most capturing.
Ms. Haendel is a treasure! A deep, sensitive, emotional yet exciting performance. No question she is one of the great violinists of her's or any generation. This is just a beautiful virtuosic performance.
@MusicPredominates it was a sarcastic tongue in cheek comment - i meant he was a git b'cos im jealous of his great talent - re-read my comment and youll see.
Any public performer has put more than one hundred the hours that the piece actually takes. Actual talent follows the hard work of always playing accurately; always thinking; never counter-practising; and so forth.
A lot of people play this piece too aggressively. Fritz Kreisler was known for his "sweet" tone and many people seem to forget that. I am glad that Ida didn't forget that!
I just re-listened to this. It's really quite amazing. Her tone is rock solid and she is always in tune, the dynamics are layered, exquisitely applied and the tempo is perfect. This is a very difficult piece and she makes it sing. Can't say enough about how good she is here (obviously)!
This is a beautiful and sensitively played rendition of this wonderful classical piece for violin. She is one of the great violinists of her generation, and one of the only women. Bravo!
She's like the Queen Elizabeth I of music, standing proud in a profession dominated by men. Here you hear exactly what I mean, solid and unshaken in sound, yet it yields the grace and subtlety only a lady can have. Bravo, Ms Haendel!!
While we agree its a lovely piece and written in 18th century style--we won't come to terms on Kreisler's style. I believe Ida was a witness to his playing and was faithful. I also believe though he wrote the piece in one style he played quite differently--as he employed his own unique style. As for Art Deco--take a listen to his Paganini Violin Concerto 1--I think Ida knew exactly what she was doing in interpreting this piece to reflect Kriesler perfectly. Ida knew Kriesler.
Who has heard Fritz play this piece? Possibly Ida..NO..PROBABLY IDA..who is known for her absolute faithfulness to the composer and his intent. She performs this piece PRECISELY as Kreisler marked--the double stops at the frog as indicated (which is probably what you refer to as "stiff" where she picks up and goes back to the frog again..she is following Mr. Kreisler's exact instructions)
This is the most elegant performance and probably the closest to Mr. Kreislers possible
@Violinjunky : We artists are not here to interpret/play a composition according to how the composer might have played it. That notion is nonsense. We are to perform. Full stop.
@Violinjunky : Fritz Tornow was a soldier in Hitler´s Bunker (see the film The Downfall). Too drunk to be able to ply the violin. The historian cannot be sure whether he lived; was captured by the Russians; died in that captivity; or was returned to Germany ? Oh ? Sorry ? Was commenting about the wrong video.
@outoftunefiddler Well, it's complicated because every violinist doesn't really play exactly what the composer writes not literaly. Every violinists plays different, and thats when interpretation comes in.
@outoftunefiddler Well, there. Im saying that every violinists does not have to follow every instruction the composer writes. Well, for Bach. But still if they did it would all sound alike.
@Violinjunky You are absolutely wright. May I just suggest another artist, a great artist, who plays this Kreilser. Her name is Laurence Kayaleh. Go look for her on youtube and please comment.
Many have asked if there is a recording of Mr. Kreisler performing this work--I have searched around as as have others and have come up empty handed. Honestly I find this to be the most inspired rendition--not played like a rapid etude, but rather each lovely note is played with importance--to be enjoyed and savored. Her double stops are gorgeous and without flaw. Violinists enjoy playing this for the challenge but as she plays it here it is also a listening pleasure.
wow.. sin palabras.. una maravillosa version.. actualmente lo estoy tocando.. me tomare prestados ciertas cosas.. como el Giss de el 0:33.. es demasiado bueno!
I had a precious opportunity to hear Ida Haendel performing the Beethoven's violin concerto live in Pasadena, California in the late 80's. It was great.
50- 1:35 could use a bit more pizzaz. The spicatto in 3:00 is not to my liking, but it's very well done all the same. The section with the trills was really nice in terms of intonation, and tone quality. The cadenza lacked emotion, but was again very precise. The retard into the chords seemed a bit...backwards. The over all tone quality and playing of the piece is really good. A good recording, just a bit slow for my tastes.
This is absolutely my favorite rendition, especially between 0:31 - 0:34 and again between 2:09 - 2:13. Oh man, so beautiful...
