@lilicetooo BMW doesn't make V6 engines, what's under V8 are straight engines, besides the 545i is naturally aspirated and the 535D is twin-turbo, so it's got a slight chance to stay near the 545i because it developes 333hp and the diesel 286hp+massive torque, and the V8 is a 4.4 not 4.5

I'm actually planning on buying a 535i. It's Got 300 HP out out of a little 3.0L I6 and if you chip it (which I intend on doing) you can get 400 HP out if it!! 6 cyl mpg with V8 power?! Perfect if you ask me!

Torque is somewhat meaningless because it's not torque at the wheels. Petrol cars usually have much higher power and take advantage of gearing. There's a LOT of confusion on this issue but Google around and you'll find the truth.

The 545i is old. The 550i is much better. I have the old one with the 4.8 liter naturally aspirated V8 and it is unbelievably quick. Wheel spin, sounds nice. Ahhhhh got to love BMW.

How about adding a pre-heater to the diesel so you can get the advantage of that Engine they did a good job with the small and big turbo thing but now move on to heat diesel an Idea to BMW ( use the hot line of your radiator and make it pass through a device and then let the diesel pass in upper layer so it will get hot before inject it to Engine) contact me for the design of this device if you are interested ^_^

The time difference between the cars is only a few seconds.... but... How much faster is the Stig than clarkson when in the same car? a fair test would have been for the stig to do a fast lap in both and see which was quickest.. putting the stig in the v8 petrol an clarkson in the diesel seems unfair straight away ...

@jasshands, the r8 was petrol but audi started development on the diesel r10 with a completely new sheet. IMHO, there are a lot of physical and mechanical similarities between the r8 and r10 tdi and audis dominance at le mans is far deeper than using a diesel powered car. you are correct about the fuel tank handicap but honestly that won't hold em back. I'm looking foreward to their new closed top prototype r18, closed top lmps look sexier to me

Acutally, BMW should take this as a compliment! I guess that the 535i wasnt

noticeably better than the 535d, so Top Gear had to use 545i to get the results they wanted (the petrol car winning). I wish Top Gear would have been a bit more neutral about diesel engines. These modern diesels are acutally quite good.

Until 19th of Dec, I owned a 2004 545i but it unfortunately had the cooling leak, N62 engines are known for. So I sold it and know a have a 2007 535d. The 545i is faster but can not leave the diesel significantly behind on a motorway. The 535d comsumes only 60% of the fuel the V8 takes. I like the diesel more, for me it has more advantages than the V8.Thats the test result - only looking on performance: take the V8,want the overall more advantageous car - take the 535d and accept no substitute.
